I. Entry

1) Greeting

Good afternoon, dear children. Nice to see you. Sit down, please. Let’s start our lesson. We have a lot to do today. We will revise Past Simple Tense, irregular verbs and also we will work with new text.

II. Following up Activities

We will start our lesson from grammar. And now let’s we remember how are built sentences in Past Simple.

Как мы называем Past Simple по-русски? Верно, простое прошедшее время. So when do we use Past Simple? (Дети отвечают, в каких случаях употребляется это грамматическое время). We use Past Simple Tense to tell about an action that started and finished at a specific time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they have one specific time in mind.

Let’s we look through the examples:

  • I saw a movie yesterday – Вчера я смотрел фильм.
  • Last year I traveled to Spain. – В прошлом году я побывал в Испании.
  • Did you have a dinner last night? –Ты ужинал вчера вечером?
  • She washed her car. – Она мыла свой автомобиль.
  • He didn’t wash his car. – Он не мыл свою машину.

Let’s call to mind the scheme of making sentences in Past Simple:

(Детям показывается слайд со схемой образования разных типов предложений в Past Simple):

+ She walked yesterday. – Она гуляла вчера.

  • She didn’t walk yesterday. –Она не гуляла вчера.

? Did she walk yesterday? / Didn’t she walk yesterday? – Она гуляла вчера? /Она не гуляла вчера?

Positive sentences «She walked yesterday»: На первом месте подлежащее (She), затем глагол во второй форме (для неправильных глаголов смотрим вторую колонку неправильных глаголов, к правильным глаголам прибавляем –ed) дальше следуют остальные члены предложения. (И так далее – объяснение по слайду).

Очень важно при наличии глагола to be в прошедшей форме (глагол to be в прошедшей форме was/were) не использовать вспомогательный глагол did/didn’t’t: He was a teacher (Он был учителем). He wasn’t a teacher (Он не был учителем). Was he a teacher? (Он был учителем?) Wasn`t he a teacher? (Он не был учителем?). Как вы видите, вспомогательный глагол did нам здесь не требуется.

Теперь мы повторим неправильные глаголы. Open the page with irregular verbs in your books.

(Класс читает неправильные глаголы по цепочке).

And after our grammar rules you will make a training exercise.

Put the verbs in brackets in the past simple:

It 1) ….was (be) Halloween, so we  2).decided.  (decide) to tell ghost stories. Jenny 3)told.. (tell) the first story and Peter 4)…went.. (go) next. When it 5)came(come) to my turn, a nasty storm 6)began.. (begin). Suddenly, the lights went out. It 7)scared.. (scare) me and 8)confused(confuse) my friends as we couldn’t see anything and we 9)…didn’t know. (don’t know) what was going on. Peter 10)stroke (strike) a match and we 11)noticed.. (notice) that Jenny wasn’t there. Then we 12)heard(hear) someone laughing in the kitchen and the lights came back on! Jenny came back into the room and 13)said(say), «No need to be worried. That isn’t a haunted house, it was just a power cut!» We all 14)felt…. (feel) very silly!

Teacher: Before we start our work with the text of course we will read new words in the wordlist 2d. (Учитель читает слова, дети повторяют слова за учителем и смотрят перевод).

Now listen to the music and tell which country does it remind you of?

(Ученики отвечают –Ирландию.) Yes, you’re right, that’s Irish – ирландская музыка, music from Ireland. What do you know about this country? Ok, Northern Ireland is a part of Great Britain, but Ireland is a separate (отдельная) country. And now look at the pictures and title and try to guess what this story is about. (Children tell that this text is about heroes, epic beings, fairies, elves).

Ok, you guessed. Now let we listen to the text and you should pronounce every word after the narrator. Be attentive!

A story should be told eye to eye, mind to mind, heart to heart.

Stanley Robertson (storyteller)r

Perhaps the best way to spend a cold, winter night in Ireland is to sit in front of the ir and enjoy the company of a Seanachai, a storyteller. Ireland has many stories to tell and they belong to two groups: myths and legends and folk tales. Throughout the years, people passed on stories to form a great tradition.

Myths and legends are stories about giants, saints, warriors and kings. They are tales about heroes who overcome great obstacles, fight with magical beasts and have incredible adventures. One of such legend is a story of the noble champion Finn Mac Cumhal and his group of warriors, the Fianna, who protected the High Kings of Ireland.

Folk tales entertain people while teaching them morale values. These stories have the most unusual characters: fairies, elves, leprechauns and many more. The Leprechaun is one of the most popular characters in Irish folklore. Its name means «small body».It is a type of fairy that makes shoes and has a hidden treasure: a crock filled with gold. If you catch it, it must tell you the secret location of its treasure immediately. But be careful! It will try to trick you into looking away for a second, and then it will disappear!

You have heard the quote (цитату) before the text. Let’s we read it once more: «A story should be told eye to eye, mind to mind, heart to heart». How do you understand this phrase? (Дети переводят цитату и пытаются сказать, что она означает в их понимании). It’s very good and soulful quote. It gives the filling of cosiness. Well, we’re coming to the exercise based on the text. Answer the questions:

  1. What do Seanachais do? – Seanachais tell the stories.
  2. What are the two types of stories people tell in Ireland? – Two types of stories that people tell in Ireland are myths and legends and folk tales.
  3. What are these myths.legends about? – Myths and legends tell us about giants, saints, warriors and kings.
  4. What characters do you find in Irish folk tales? – We can find fairies, elves, leprechauns in Irish folk tales.

And we are coming to the next exercise. Look at the blackboard. I’ll ask you to find adjectives that the author uses for such words:

  • beasts                adventures
  • champion                obstacles
  • values                        location
  • characters.

(Дети подбирают из текста определения к данным словам).

And the last task for today. You will work in group and you should think of a popular Russian folktale and tell other groups. There will be 4 points in your telling and here they are (Перечень пунктов выводится на интерактивную доску):

  • What is it about?
  • Who are the main characters?
  • What happens in the story?

What moral values does the text suggest?

You should make your story in English. Be faster, please, we have a little time.

So let’s we check your works. (Ученики по группам зачитывают свои наработки).

III. Closure. Write down the home task, please. Page 24, exercise 6. Also you need to revise irregular verbs. Thank you, children for your work. Good bye.
