      VI.        Read the text and make up 10 questions to it:

Catherine was five years old. She often went to the shops with her mother.

She liked toys very much, and she often stopped and looked at them in the shops, but her mother usually said, «Don’t stop and look at the toys today, Catherine. It’s late».

Catherine’s mother did not usually go to the shops on Saturdays, because she always had a lot of work at home on that day, but last Friday evening her husband said, «Some of my friends are going to visit us on Sunday», and she didn’t have much food in the house.

She took Catherine at 10 o’clock on Saturday morning, and they went to the shops together. Catherine’s mother said to her, «Stay near me, Catherine, and don’t stop and look at the .toys today».

Catherine said, «Yes, Mummy, » and she held her mother’s hand. But then her mother had a lot of parcels, and Catherine stopped holding her hand.

They came to the best shop in the town. There were quite a lot of men in front of it. There was a beautiful toy bear in one of the windows, and Catherine stopped for a few seconds and looked at it. Then she looked for her mother, but she was not there. There were only men round Catherine, and they were all much taller than she was.

Catherine was very young, but she was a clever girl. She did not cry. There was a policeman in the middle of the street near the shop. Catherine waited at the side of the road for a minute, and then the policeman stopped the cars and the buses. Catherine went to him and said, «Good morning. Have you seen any ladies in this street this morning? »

«Yes, I have», the policeman said. «А lot of ladies have passed me this morning». «And has one passed you without a small girl? » Catherine said.

V.        Read the text and make up 10 questions to it:

Once upon a time there was a big forest through which many travellers went to get to the town on the other side. The forest was so big and dark that the travellers often got lost. They tried to find their way and finally came to a pretty little сottage where a witch tricked the poor travellers by placing a magic spell 011 them. One day a poor little girl got lost in the forest. It grew very dark and the girl was frightened. She tried many times to light the candle but couldn’t. Then the poor girl walked under a big nut-tree but the witch turned the-nut over the little girl’s head into a pumpkin. The girl felt around in the dark and found out a pumpkin. She hollowed it and put the candle into the pumpkin, and then put it on her head. After a while she came to the witch’s cottage. On seeing a horrible two-headed monster the witch fell down on the stone floor and soon died.

THE MAYFLOWER 

         Many, thousands of people from different parts of the United States and from many other countries of the world go to see a rock which runs far out into the sea near the town of New Plymouth. They take their hats off in homage to   the brave men and women who, more than three hundred and fifty years ago, came to that country to begin a new life. They had then built a small settlement near this rock, and the American people say that out of that small settlement grew their big country — the United States of America. It was in 1620, in the times of King James the First. The English people did not like their king, many of them even left England and went to live in other countries.         

In November 1620, a small ship, the Mayflower, left England. There were about one hundred men and women on board the ship. The Mayflower sailed across the stormy waters of the Atlantic Ocean for seven long weeks before the people at last saw land. It was America.

The weather was bad. It was raining and it was cold. Sixteen men left the Mayflower and went ashore. In the evening they returned to the ship and brought some maize which they had found on the shore. Nobody in Europe had ever seen maize then, but when the people on board the Mayflower ate it, they liked it very much.

During the next five weeks it became very cold. More and more men fell ill. At last they found a good place to live with a |good harbour for ships, some fields and a wood near it, and even a small river. The people began to build a settlement there.

By January 1621, there were already two streets in the settlement, and they called it “New-Plymouth”. The people were tired and cold. Their life was very hard. Many died. But when the houses were ready, life for the settlers became easier.

One day the people of the settlement saw an Indian walking along one of the streets of their settlement. They were very frightened, but the Indian came up to them, smiled and exclaimed:

“Hullo, Yankee! Hullo, Yankee!"This Indian could speak a little English. He had learned, it from the sailors of a ship which had come to that part of America some years before, and he called all Englishmen «Yankee»
