I. Greetings

Think of a name and a sport-related slogan for your team. Introduce your team.

II. Quiz - It's the Olympic Games!

Каждой команде даются карточки с вопросами и вариантами ответов. Команды дают ответы, которые считают правильными. Затем всем раздаются карточки с правильными вариантами ответа. Изучив их, каждая команда задаёт 3 вопроса по содежанию информации из карточек. За каждый правильный вопрос команда получает очко, за каждый неправильный вопрос очко у команды забирают.

1. How often do the Summer Olympic Games take place?

Every four years there are the Summer Olympic Games, the Winter Olympic Games, and the Paralympic Games. The Paralympic Games (for disabled athletes) are held after the Summer Olympics. They include events such as wheelchair races: you have to be very fit and have strong arms to compete in these races! The Winter Olympic Games used to take place in the same year as the Summer Olympics, but are now held mid-way between one Summer Olympics and the next. 

2. When and where did the original Ancient Olympic Games take place? 

A. A hundred years ago in China                       C. One million years B.C. in a cave

The first records of the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece are from 776 BC - that's well over two thousand years ago. They continued to take place every four years for over one thousand years, until the Romans banned them in 393 AD.

3. The modern Olympic Games were started by an organisation called the IOC. What do the letters IOC stand for?

A. International Olympic Committee     C. Impossible Olympic Country

The International Olympic Committee was formed in 1894, and the first modern IOC Olympic Games took place in Athens, Greece, in 1896. People had tried before 1894 to get the Olympics going again, but there wasn't much interest. When archaeologists discovered the ruins of ancient Olympia, people became much more interested in reviving the Games.

4. The flag of the Olympic Games has five coloured rings joined together. What do the rings represent?

A. The continents of the world                C. No meaning, just nice colours  

B. Five magic circles                               D. A game of ring-toss

The five coloured rings on the Olympic flag represent the inhabited continents: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. The rings are linked to represent that all nations are linked by the Games. The ring colours are black, blue, green, red, and yellow. The background colour is white. The colours of the rings and background are not linked with particular continents, but were chosen because every nation has at least one of these six colours in its flag.

5. The Olympic Flame is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Before the Games start it is carried around the world to where the Games will take place. Where does its journey begin?

A. The North Pole                                            C. Olympia in Greece          

B. Outer space                                                  D. Wherever it finished last time

The Olympic Flame symbolises hope and peace. It is lit at Olympia in Greece, because that was the original home of the ancient Games over two thousand years ago. Many people take a turn at carrying the flame on its journey from Olympia to the main stadium of the host country for the opening ceremony of the Games. The flame from the torch is used to light a big fire that burns for the whole time the Games are taking place.

6. Medals are awarded for first, second, and third places in Olympic events. What are these medals called?

A. Heavy medals                                 C.  Best in Class medals                                

B. Congressional Medals             D. Gold, silver and bronze medals

First place wins the gold medal; second place wins silver; and third place wins bronze. Olympic athletes who do not win a medal are still winners, because they have been chosen from their country's best athletes. The very first gold medals were made of solid gold, but now gold medals are made of silver covered in a thin layer of gold.

7. There are many different sports at the Olympic Games; which of these is an official event at the modern Summer Olympic Games?

A. Swimming                                                                   C. Snowboarding

There are many swimming events in the Summer Olympics. Snowboarding and ice hockey are official sports in the Winter Olympic Games. III. Team Game. Команды слушают вопрос, и член команды, знающий ответ, выкрикивает название своей команды и даёт свой вариант ответа. Цель каждого игрока — быть быстрее игроков команды-соперника. За каждый неправильный ответ команда лишается балла, за каждый правильный — получает 1 балл.

1. It's a team sport. It is played in the summer on the grass. Players try to kick the ball into the goal. (football)

2. It's a winter sport. Players wear skates.They have a helmet. They hit the puck with a stick. (ice hockey)

3. People do it inside. They have to wear a bathing suit. They shouldn't be afraid of heights because they jump from high up sometimes. When they finish doing this sport, they wrap up on a towel. (diving)

IV. Proverbs and Idioms

Команды получают карточки, на которых представлены английские пословицы и идиомы, в разрезанном виде (как показано в тексте задания). Цель команды — найти недостающую часть пословицы/идиомы. Команды  по одной зачитывают получившиеся пословицы и идиомы. Ведущий оценивает правильность ответов. Затем каждая команда получает русские эквиваленты пословиц и идиомы. Задача команд — сопоставить пословицу с её переводом. После коллективного обсуждения каждый игрок в команде зачитывает определённую пару-соответствие при ответе. Команды выбирают пословицы и идиомы, которые можно отнести к спорту, и объясняют свой выбор.

VI. Sports in Music. Прослушиваются фрагменты песен, и задача игроков — услышать, о каком виде спорта поётся. Член команды, знающий ответ, выкрикивает название своей команды и даёт свой вариант ответа. Цель каждого игрока — быть быстрее игроков команды-соперника. За каждый неправильный ответ команда лишается балла, за каждый правильный — получает 1 балл.
