          English Sports and Games

Слайд 1 Sport is very important in our life. It is popular among young and old people. Many people do morning exercises, jog in the morning and train themselves in clubs, in different sections and take part in sport competitions. Other people like sports too, but they only watch sports games, listen to sports news. They prefer reading interesting stories about sportsmen. But they don't go in for sports. If you want to feel fit you’d better go in for one kind of sport or another. I should admit that everyone must do all he can to be healthy because  good health is better than the best medicine.

Слайд 2  Many of the games we play now have come from Britain . Sport is very important part of life in Great Britain. The British have a reputation for being mad about sports. The Englishmen love sports, they are called sports-lovers in spite of the fact that some of them neither play games nor even watch them. They only like to speak about sports. In fact they like watching sports more than playing them. Thousands of people devote their leisure time to outdoor and indoor games: Слайд 3 athletics, Слайд 4 mountain climbing, Слайд 5  boxing and other sports.

Слайд 6  The game of football was first played in Britain, and later people began to play football in other countries. Слайд 7  Football in English is better known as “soccer”. Слайд 8 The word  “soccer” comes from “Association Football” (played according to the rules of FIFA – Federation International of Football Associations) . It is the most popular English game. Almost every school has its football team and every boy in Britain knows a lot about the game. He can tell you the names of the players in the most important teams, he has pictures of them and even knows the results of many matches. Millions of spectators attend football matches every year. These matches are organized by the English Football league. Слайд 9  There are many football clubs all over Britain. Слайдs 10 There are also a lot of wonderful stadiums where football matches are played. These are home fields for different clubs. Слайды  11,12,13

Слайд 14  Rugby is another popular British sport which is played in other countries. It is also called rugby football  or “rugger”.  Слайд 15  The game is called so because it was originated at Rugby — a well-known English public school, Слайд 16 where football was first played this way. Слайд 17 You can see a ball in this game, but it is not round. It is oval. This is a team game. There are fifteen players in each team. It is a popular game in England. There are many amateur rugby football teams in this country. The story is told that in 1823 boys at Rugby school in England were playing football in the normal way, when suddenly one boy picked the ball up and ran with it. That was how a new game was born. There are two forms of rugby football: the amateur game and the professional game. The two games have different rules.

Слайд 18 Football is the favourite winter game in Britain and cricket is the favourite summer sport. This game is associated with England. There are many cricket clubs in this country. English people like to play cricket. Cricket is the English national sport in summer. They think that summer without cricket isn't summer. Слайд 19 If you want to play cricket you must wear white boots, a white shirt and white long trousers. Слайд 20  Cricket is an open air game played with a ball, bats and wickets.  There are two teams of 11 players each.  Слайд 21 It is a very slow game. International matches can last for 5 days. The spectators have to be very patient. The game is played on a pitch with a wicket at each end. Cricket is popular in boys' schools, but girls play cricket too. Amateur cricket has the same rules as the professional game. Слайд 22 In England almost all villages and towns have their cricket teams. A typical amateur cricket match is played between two teams - the "home" team and the "visitors" who come from another village.

Many English people play tennis and golf.  Слайд 23 Golf is typical for the countryside. Слайд 24 Golf was developed in Scotland. Now it is widely spread all over Britain. Golf is a ball and golf stick game played on a natural field. In this game one has to knock a ball into a hole.

Слайд 25 A great number of people play and watch tennis or lawn tennis. It is another favourite sport of the Englishmen. Слайд 26 It was first played in England in 1872. Слайд 27 But it is a game for all ages. There are very many tennis clubs in England. There are many tennis courts in English publish parks of every town.  Слайд 28 Wimbledon is the centre of lawn tennis. It is famous for World championship tennis matches. The first tournaments took place in 1877 at Wimbledon. Some years ago Wimbledon was a village, now it is a part of London. The most important tennis competition takes place there every summer. Слайд 29 These tournaments are the main event of the lawn tennis season in Britain and, in fact, in the world.  Every tennis player dreams of taking part at them.

Слайд 30 Englishmen heard about table tennis in 1880. Then the International Table Tennis Association was formed and the international rules were worked out. Many people like to play table tennis. This game is played by men and women. There are some tennis clubs in England, but if you play there it is necessary to pay money for it. Englishmen like playing tennis but many of them prefer to watch this game.

Britain is also famous for racing competitions . Слайд 31 Next to football, the chief spectator sport in British life is horse-racing   or horse-riding. Слайд 32 Horseracing  ,  “The sport of Kings” is a very popular sport. A lot of people are interested in the races and risk money on the horse, which they think will win.

There are some other racing competitions in England. Слайд 33 They are motor-car racing, boat-racing,  dog-racing and even races for donkeys. All kinds of racings are popular in England. It is interesting to see the egg-and-spoon race. The runner, who takes part in this competition, must carry an egg in a spoon. It is not allowed to drop the egg.

Слайд 34 There are a lot of other popular sports in Great Britain, for example croquet  and rowing.

Слайд 35 The famous boat-race between the teams of Oxford and Cambridge attracts large crowds of people.

Слайд 36 Polo is popular too. It was brought to Britain from India in the 19th century by the English soldiers. Слайд 37  Over three million people participate in basketball in the UK.

Слайд 38  Walking and swimming , Слайд 39  aerobics (keep-fit exercises) and yoga,  squash and cycling are the most popular sporting activities among as men as women. Слайд 40 By the way, the British Cycling Touring Club is the oldest touring club in the world.

Слайд 41 Snooker (billiards) and darts  are the next most popular sports among men. Darts is a very popular pub game.

Слайд 42 The British also like to play baseball  and hockey  Слайд 43  (grass-hockey, not ice-hockey). Various forms of athletics, such as running and  jumping  are also popular.

Слайд 44 Sometimes you can hear that there are no winter sports in England. Of course the English weather is not always cold enough to ski, skate, or toboggan, but winter is a good season for hunting , shooting and fishing. Traditionally, they are the favourite sports of the British upper class. This is a popular pastime among some members of the higher social classes and is a mark of their status. The most widespread form of hunting is fox-hunting.

Слайд 45 There are the most famous places in Britain associated with a particular kind of sport. One of them is Wimbledon where the All-England Lawn Tennis Championship are held in July (since 1877). Слайд 46 The other one is Wembly - a stadium in north London where international football matches, the Cup Finals and other events have taken place since 1923.

Indeed sport in one form or another is an essential part of daily life in Britain.
