Student: Good afternoon, Mrs. Roberts. Are you still looking for participants for your drama club?

Interlocutor: Hello. Yes, I am.

Student: And what should I do to join it? Do you hold any audition or other tests of that kind? I’ve heard some students’ saying that it is necessary.

Interlocutor:  Actually, there are no special auditions. But if you are really interested in performing, come to our next lesson and I’ll give you an extract from some book to read and you will show us your artistic talents.

Student: Oh, now I see, that everything is much easier than I expected. By the way, what time do the lessons start and how long do they last? Where do they take place?

Interlocutor: The lessons are on Tuesday and Friday at 4.00 p. m. in room №308.

Interlocutor: Oh, no. Our course it is free of charge. I want every student to be able to join our club.

Student: It is really cool! This way I don’t need to bother my parents. And what play are you going to put on?

Interlocutor: It will be “Intrigue and Love” written by Friedrich Schiller.

Student:  I love this play even more than “Romeo and Juliet”, though the plots are very much alike. I will definitely come to the next lesson and try to do my best at this new discipline for me.

Interlocutor: Good! See you there.

Student: See you.

Interlocator: And, for example, what is your favourite film?

Student: Doubtless, it is V for Vendetta by Wachowski brothers. This work has an exciting plot, impressive special effects and original characters. To my mind, the main of them – V and Ivy were perfectly portrayed by Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman.

Interlocutor: Hello!

St.: Haven’t seen you for ages! I’m so glad we met at last!

Int.: So am I! Wow, you look gorgeous! It seems that you’ve taken up sport professionally. Am I right?

St.: Oh yeah, I’m a real sport fan now. I just love it and devote all my spare time to it. Especially it refers to jogging and swimming.  And you?  Do you go in for sports?

Int.: No. Frankly speaking, I love neither sport nor healthy food.

St.: Why? Don’t you have enough time?

Int.: I wouldn’t say so. I just think it’s not necessary for me now, you know. I’m a teenager, so, do I really have to worry about my health? I guess I will have a chance some day. And what exactly do you do? And why?

St.: Well, the most important thing I do is keeping a healthy diet. The right proportion of proteins, fat and carbohydrates in your organism ensure its proper work. I feel that without harmful sugar and different additives I’m becoming stronger and stronger day by day. Then, as I’ve already said, I love jogging and swimming. 4 or 5 times a week is enough to both keep fit and not be exhausted, I guess. As for my motivation, my main goal is to have a strong and nice body.

Int.: Sounds great. And is this enough to stay energetic? What’s your secret?

St.: Actually, in order to feel good all day long it’s very important to sleep at least 8 hours a day. As for me, I go to bed at 10 pm and wake up at 7. Then a very good idea is to take an invigorating shower in the morning – it lets me feel full of energy till evening. So, you see, the secret is very simple.

Int.: Oh yes.

St.: I’ve got an idea! Wouldn’t you like to go jogging with me in the mornings? I think it would be fun and healthy at the same time.

Int.: I’d like to! There’s a nice park nearby. Is it suitable?

St.: Yes, it appeals to me too. Well, I have to go now. See you tomorrow at 7:30 near the entrance!

Int.: See you.

Interlocutor: Ok. I am sure that your teacher will be delighted with our project. But when do you need to finish the project? We should work hard if we have little time.

Student: Oh, don’t worry. We have almost 2 months to finish it so we don’t need to hurry. Moreover, we have time to consider some variants of embodiment of our good idea. How about going to the next lecture together? Do you have any plans?

Interlocutor: Great idea, I don’t have any plans for the next week. Will it be ok if we go to the lecture on Friday?

SAMPLE CONVERSATION

Student: Excuse me, couldn`t you help me?

Interlocutor: Surely. What’s the matter?

Student: I`m a Russian tourist and I have come here on my own. Can you tell me what the main tourist attractions in your country are and what I can visit?

Interlocutor: I have been living here for 40 years, so of course I know what to suggest. The first is river rafting.

Student: Well, I`ve heard about the famous New Zealand mountain rivers, but unfortunately it is not definitely not my variant, as I`m not a fan of extreme sport, though I like water.

Interlocutor: In this case I can offer you diving.

Student: I guess, that the Pacific seabed is unbelievably charming, but sorry to say I have some problems with the health of my lungs, so I don`t think I can go in for such sport.

Interlocutor: Maybe you`ve heard something about zorbing, a motherland of which is New Zealand.

Student: Oh yeah! How could I forget about it? It`s really one of my dreams to roll down the truly legendary picturesque hills of your country in such an unusual device. This variant sounds very interesting, but if you can remember anything else, it would be great.

Interlocutor: Yes, I still have one option left. It`s an excursion to the volcanic plateau.

Student: Certainly, volcanoes are an unforgettable spectacle, but frankly speaking I`m a real coward for such shows.

Interlocutor: Well, what do you choose after all?

Student: It seems to me that my choice is obvious: I`ll go zorbing. I just believe that being to this wonderful country is a great chance to try this new experience.

Interlocutor: I wish you like it!

Student: Thank you very much! Your knowledge was very useful.

Interlocutor: Not at all! Enjoy New Zealand!

Student: Thanks! Goodbye!

Interlocutor: Goodbye!

The customer(c): Hello! I’m looking for a gift for my mother’s birthday in your shop; may I ask you some questions?

S: Surely! I’ll try to help you.

C: First of all, how much do the yellow checked sunglasses cost?  Are they more expensive than the “Chanel Chance” perfume?

S: They cost 20 dollars. They are 5 dollars cheaper than the perfume, but considering the shipping, prices are almost the same.

C: And do you have any watches? My mom has just lost hers; I think it would be a useful present.

S: The only model left is the “Next” black watches.

C: Unfortunately, she doesn’t like this colour. Ok, and what about the shipping time of all three products?

S: It’s from 2 to 3 weeks for the sunglasses, 5 days for the perfume and 10 days for the watch.

C: I think, I will take the perfume. There will be no problem with shipping and there’s no risk that she won’t like the present – she’s used that fragrance for 5 years already.

S: Should I send you the perfume immediately?

C: Yes, please! Can I pay with the credit card?

S: Of course. Thank you for shopping in “Made in China”!

SAMPLE CONVERSATION

Student: Hello, Julie!

Interlocutor: Hello!

Student: I know that you have been studying in Washington for four years. How do you like the atmosphere and the town in general?

Interlocutor: Washington is beautiful at any time, I dare say. It is so different from other American cities in many aspects and has its peculiarities. It is so interestingly designed, to begin with. Secondly, there are a lot museums and historical places; you won’t be bored with this town! And how are yours first impressions?

Student: I like the atmosphere and the mild climate there. Besides, it is really beautiful and despite the fact that Washington is not as big as New York, it is really tidy.  And as to the places of visit, it is exactly what I need to know from you! What sights can you suggest visiting?

Interlocutor: When I first arrived here, I was amazed what an imposing and stately building the Capitol is! The White House impresses me every time, when I go there. I was impressed more by the Library of Congress. It is known to be the world's largest libraryThen see the Mall. I was struck by the disparity of London's Pall Mall and the Washington's Mall. In contrast to Pall Mall, which is a busy shopping street, the Mall appears to be a long park like area, planted with trees, broad and quiet, extending from the Capitol to the Potomac River. The National Gallery of Art, the National Air and Space Museum have outstanding collections of art and sculpture. The Pencil is a stunning sculpture, because of its height. All this places are worth visiting!

Student: Oh, it is such detailed information! Thanks a lot for your opinion and suggestion; I guess they will be useful to me. But I think, I need to thank you another way. How about going to café tonight?

Interlocutor: Ok, I don’t have any plans. Will it be ok if we meet near the Mall at about 6 pm?

Student: All right, I am looking forward to our meeting. See you there.

Interlocutor: Ok, see you.
