Teacher: Hello, children! I'm very glad to see you.

Teacher: Today you're going to have a very unusual lesson. You will travel to a wonderful land full of images, exciting adventures, spells, amusements, and delights. You'll meet different characters from your favourite books, read some abstracts of their books, and also become writers for a short time. I think the lesson will be interesting and you'll enjoy the journey. So, welcome to this fascinating and wonderful land!

«Choose an author as you choose a friend».

«Each book is a magic box».

«Books are worlds of wonders».

Pupil 1: If we enjoy reading book, every character is our friend. So the author who created this book is our friend too.

Pupil2: When we open an interesting book we are introduced to a number of various characters, a lot of exciting adventures and many other wonders.

Pupil3: I think that the phrase «Choose an author as you choose a friend» is true because when choosing a friend we choose a person with whom we have much in common. Also we choose the author who is interesting to us. Some people are fond of reference books, and others are keen on fables. Everyone selects an author depending on their personal preferences. That's why we choose an author as we choose a friend.

Pupil 4: Each book is a magic world full of knowledge and when you read a book you receive lots of splendid and useful information about unknown things.

Pupil 5: When you open a book you go into another world. Wonderful and sometimes incredible heroes become our friends. There are many mysteries and wonders awaiting us. Each book acts as a magic wand and helps us to feel happy and cheerful when we are sad and gloomy.

Teacher: You can see here many books. Are they familiar to you? Have you read them?

Pupil 1: Yes, I see the books that I have read: «Alice's Adventures in Wonderland», «King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table».

Pupil 2: I've read «Gulliver's Travels» and «The Jungle Book».

Pupil 3: When I was small my favorite book was «The Prince and the Pauper». I have read it many times and seen the film.

Teacher: What kind of reading do you prefer: do you like reading books, newspapers, magazines? If so, what kind of books, newspapers and magazines?

Pupil 4: As for me I prefer reading fairy tales because they are fascinating and enjoyable. They're easy to read and while reading them I relax.

Pupil 5: I'm fond of reading historical novels. I'm interested in the history of ancient countries and cities.

Pupil 6: I often read adventure books such as «The Adventures of Tom Sawyer» by Mark Twain, «The Wizard of Oz» by Frank Baum, «The allied» and «Odyssey» by Homer, «The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe» by Daniel Defoe, and many others. These books are splendid, exciting, and well-written. While reading I pretend that I'm one of the characters in the book.

Pupil 7: In my opinion, reading encyclopedias is the most entertaining because all kind of information is collected there. When I was in Britain I bought some English encyclopedias They're colorful and easy to read. I advise all of you to read them. I'm sure you'll enjoy them.

Teacher: During our journey you can meet not only the characters of different books but also some authors. Do you have favorite authors?

Pupil 8: Yes, of course. I adore Daniel Defoe, the author of

Robinson Crusoe. He is one of the best-known writers of England. Besides the story of the shipwrecked seaman on a lonely island Defoe wrote many books and pamphlets of all sorts. He narrated adventures in a way that makes them easy to believe.

Clarissa Christie. She wrote 79 novels and several plays. I have read her books Mysterious Affair at Styles», «The Murder of Roger Ackroyd», «The Mousetrap and others Detective stories attract me because they are true-to-life. When I grow up I'll become a detective.

Teacher: I know that all of you are good story-tellers, aren't you? Your narration will be more interesting and powerful if you use connecting words. At the beginning of your narration the following words are suitable: first, first of all, therefore, for that reason, so, however. If you want to continue the story you should use: next, then, after that, afterwards, later on. You may express parallel actions with the help of the following words and their combinations: just hen, meanwhile — in the meantime. To finish the story you can use: eventually, finally, in the end. The next words can also make your narration more amusing and original: so, as, however, anyhow, nevertheless, because, although, on the contrary, actually, that s why.

Teacher: Now let's see how well you remember connecting words. So I suggest meeting the main heroes from some books of English classical literature. Please read the following extracts and fill in the gaps with the connecting words.
