KING  LEAR

Once  upon  a  time  there  lived  an  old  king  of  Britain. His  name  was  Lear. He  had  three  daughters:   Goneril, Regar, Cordelia. One  day  ring  Lear  called  his  daughters  and  said:

King  Lear: I’m  very  old  and  tired. I  can’t  be  the  king  of  Britain  any  more. I want  to  divide  the  country into  three  parts  and  give  one  part  to  each  of  you.  Each  of  you  will  be  the  queen  of  your  part. But  first  you  must  tell  me  how  you  love  me. The  one  who  loves  me  more  must  get  the  better  part.

King’s  joker: You’re a  fool,  my  lord. But  the  worst  fool  is  the  one  who  doesn’t  know  he  is  a  fool. Be  afraid  of  your  daughters !

King  Lear: Don’t  bother  me! Well, my  daughter  Goneril,  say  how  much  you  love  me.

Goneril: Dear  father! I  love  you  very  much. I  love  you  more  than  my  eyes, more  than  my  beauty,  more  than  my  life. No  child   loves  his  father  than  I  love  you.

King  Lear: And  you  my  daughter  Regar, how  much  you  love  me?

Regar: Oh, my  dearest  father, I  love  you  as  none  can. I  love  you  more  than  the  sun,  more  than  my  beauty. I  love  you  with  all  me  soul. You  must  be  proud  of  my  love, sir.

King  Lear: Cordelia, why  don’t  you  tell  me  how  you  love  me?

Cordelia: Sir, I don’t  understand  why  my  sisters  say  that  they  love  you  more  than  anything  else. They  are  married, so  they  must  love  their  husbands. Of  course,  I  love  you, because  you  are  my  father. But  when  I’m  marry, I’ll  love  my  husband, too.

The  joker: Listen, master, she  is  right. She  loves  you.

King  Lear: Stop  it! You’re  fool! My  two  daughters  love  me  so much, but  Cordelia  doesn’t. You’re  always  been  my  favourite  child, but  you’re  hurt  me  much.

Cordelia: Perhaps, I  was  the  one  who  said  the  truth.

King  Lear: Listen  to  me, my  daughters. You,  Goneril  and  you, Regar  will  get  your  parts  of  my  country, but  you, Cordelia will  get  nothing. I  don’t  want  to  hear  about  you. You  aren’t  my  daughter  any  more.

The  joker: My  poor  old  master, you’ve  just  made  such  a  mistake! You’ve  lost  both  your  country  and  the  only  daughter  who  loves  you!

II

Cordelia  went  to  France  and  married  the  Fench  king, who  loved  her  very  much. Old  king  Lear  wanted  to  rest, so  he  went  to  Goneril’s  castle.

King  Lear: You’ll  see, my  joker, how  much  Goneril  loves  me, She’s  waiting  for  us. We’ll  find  home  in  her  castle.

The  joker: I  hope  you’re  right, my  master, but  be  ready  to  see  true  face  of  your  daughter.

King  Lear: Here, I  see  her  castle. But  where  are  the  servants? Why  aren’t  they  greeting  us? Where  is  my  daughter?  Is  she  ill?

The  joker: Oh, no, my  master. She’s  well, I  think. She  just  doesn’t  want to  see her  old  father, who  gave  her  the  biggest  part  of  the  country. She  doesn’t  need  you  any  more.

King  Lear: You’re  fool! I  don’t   want  to  listen  to  you! Look!  I  can  see  my  Goneril. She  is  waiting  for  us.

Goneril: Good  afternoon, father. What  are  you  doing  here?

King  Lear: Glad  to  see  you, my  daughter. I’m  old  and  I  want  to  rest, so  I  think, you  will  let  us  to  stay  at  your  castle.

Goneril: Why  me? I  think  you  must  go  to  Regar. She  loves  you  more.

King  Lear: Didn’t  you  say  loved  me more  than  anything  in  the  world?

Goneril: I  tell  you  go  to  Regar. Good  bye.

The  joker: What  did  I  tell  you? Now  you’ve  seen  Goneril’s  real  face, haven’t  you? Where  are  we  going  now, master?

King  Lear: I’ve  made  a  mistake  with  Goneril, but  Regar  loves  me/ She’ll  be  glad  to  see  me  and  together  we’ll  punish  Goneril. Let’s  go  to  Regar!

The  joker: My  poor, poor  master! Only  your  joker  loves  you.

King  Lear: Cheer up! I  can  see  Regar’s  castle. There  she is. She  is  standing  on  the  wall  and  waiting  for  me.

Regar: Good  evening, father. Why  have  you  come?

King  Lear: Your  sister  Goneril  is  a  bad  daughter. She  didn’t  let  me  in  her

castle. She  doesn’t  really  love  me  and  she  never  has. I  hope  you’re  my  real  daughter  and  you  won’t  let  your  old  father  be  homeless.

Regar: I’m  the  queen  of  my  part.  I  don’t  need  you  any  more. You’re  an  old  fool. I’ll  never let  you  in. Go  away!

King  Lear: I  have  no  daughters. They  all  don’t  love  me. I’m  a  miserable  old  king, who  has  no  kingdom. I’m  a  father  who  has  no  children.

The  joker:  Remember,  your  youngest  daughter, master. She  loved  you.  She  was  the  only  one  who  truly  loved  you.

King  Lear: No, she  won’t  forgive  me. I  didn’t  give  her  anything. I’ve lost  everything  in  my  life. I’m  homeless king, an  unhappy  father. Nobody  needs  me,  nobody  loves  me. I’m  a  fool, a  fool, afool….

King  Lear  went  mad. His  youngest  daughter  Cordelia  found  him  and  took  to  her  castle. She  decided  to  punish  her  sisters   and  sent  the  army  to  Britain, but  her  army  was  beaten. Lear and  Cordelia  became  prisoners. Goneril  and  Regar  hated  each  other. Regar  poisoned  Goneril  and  soon  killed  herself  with  a  knife. Cornelia  was  hanged  in  prison. Having  seen  her  death, king  Lear  died  of  broken  heart.

The  weight  of  this  sad  time  we  must  obey

Speak  what  we  feel, not  what  we  ought  to  say

The  oldest  hath  borne  most:  we  that  are  young

Shall  never  see  so  much, not  live  so  long.
