  1. Organizing moment.
  2. Greeting address.
  3. The definition of the topic:

T:  Well, my dear, on the blackboard you can see the names of the most prominent people in the history of Britain (William the Conqueror, Charles I, Henry VIII, Oliver Cromwell, Richard the Lion Heart) I’d like you to listen to a short poem I’m going to recite and try to guess which of them we are going to devote our today’s lesson to:

                                       The English history remembers him

As rather pitiless and cruel King.

The thing on which he spent his life

Was searching for the worthy wife.

Six wives he had, to be exact,

In hope to have a son, in fact.

IV. Great! In the process of our work we have to clear up one question. Which one, you’ll learn after managing the puzzle. Using the way chess horse moves on the chessboard read the question hidden in this cells.

The pupils are supposed to read: “Who was he more:  a despot or great man?”

  1. Reading.

T: We spent a plenty of time on studying the information about this British monarch, but still now I mean you to read one more text about him, trying to remember not only the biography of him but the new words also

King Henry VIII ruled England from1509 till his death in 1547.  This period was one of the most colourful in British history.  To some, Henry VIII was a strong and ruthless ruler, to others an egoistic tyrant who was pitiless for his wives and close friends. But he possessed considerable political insight, and he provided England with an actual and active national leader. A great deal of religious, political and social change happened during his time.

Henry VIII, the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, was born at Greenwich on 28 June 1491. He took the throne upon his father's death in 1502 and succeeded in 1509. Although most people today think of Henry VIII as a fat tyrant, in his youth he was admired for his intelligence, good looks, good nature and athletic ability. One of his contemporaries wrote that he was ‘one of the goodliest men that lived in his time, in manners more than a man, most amiable, courteous and benign in gesture unto all persons, he speaks good French, Latin and Spanish; is very religious; heard three masses daily when he hunted ... He is extremely fond of hunting, and never takes that diversion without tiring eight or ten horses ... He is also fond of tennis.’

As the author of the book supporting the Roman Catholic Church, in 1521 Henry was given the title 'Defender of the Faith' by the Pope. Henry's scholarly interests included writing both books and music, he was a lavish patron of the arts. He was an accomplished player of many instruments and a composer. He loved to dance, and was very fond of performances and theatrics.  He particularly liked to dress up in disguise and "surprise" people by pretending to be someone else.  Masquerades became very popular in King Henry's time.  To support this lifestyle, Henry depleted most of his father's carefully built-up treasury.  However, he made up for his lavish spending by confiscating the immense wealth of various English monasteries, in the name of religious reform. Henry's reign saw relative stability and prosperity.  Henry's ministers guided the country through the dangerous web of European politics. With the exception of Scotland, England was never invaded by an outside force during Henry's rule. Henry also increased the size of the navy from 5 to 53 ships.   The second half of Henry's reign was dominated by two issues very important for the later history of England and the monarchy: the succession and the Protestant Reformation, which led to the formation of the Church of England. However, Henry's reformation had produced dangerous Protestant-Roman Catholic differences in the kingdom. The monasteries' wealth had been spent on wars and had also built up the economic strength of the aristocracy and other families in the counties, which in turn was to encourage ambitious Tudor court factions.

Henry was a supreme egoist. He advanced personal desires under the guise of public policy or moral right, forced his ministers to pay extreme penalties for his own mistakes, and executed many with little excuse. Sometimes his closest friends became his mostly hated enemies and couldn’t expect any mercy from him. In his later years he became grossly fat, paranoid, and unpredictable.   But of course, Henry is remembered today for just one thing - well, six things. Six wives, to be exact. The destiny of most of them was extremely tragic.

  1. Paraphrase the sentences using the equivalents from the text:
  1. Henry VIII was a powerful and cruel reigner.
  2. He was a selfish despot who was merciless for his wives and close friends.
  3. He came to the throne after his father died in 1502 and was crowned in 1509.
  4. In behaviour he was most friendly, polite and kind.
  5. Henry’s interests concerned writing books and composing, He was a patron of arts.
  6. He was a perfect player of many instruments.
  7. Especially he was fond of dressing the way not to be recognized and tricked people.
  8. Henry spent most of his father’s carefully collected treasury.
  9. He forced out his own wishes under the mask of public policy or moral right.

  1. Discussion and analysis:

T: This time you’ll have to realize whether positive or negative moments prevailed in Henry’s life. For this let’s divide into two groups. Each group will be given a definite task. One of you should find in the text advantages, the other disadvantages and try to prove each other that you are right. Try to be as convincing as it is possible. Use actively the information from the text and recollect everything we spoke about it earlier.

(the pupils fill in the table and then discuss the facts with each other using the phrases given below )

VII. Listening Comprehension:

The presentation on computer demonstrates the portraits of Henry’s wives and the pupils listen to the text.

T: Listen to the text, try to define what wife of Henry the definite text is about and fill in the table with the proper number.

  1. This woman is considered to be the most devoted and thoughtful of all Henry’s wives. She was as much as a nurse to him. Being an ideal wife she also managed to become a perfect stepmother to Henry’s children. This King’s wife happened to outlive her remarkable husband and after his death even managed to marry to Thomas Seymour, the man she loved long ago.
  2.  This maiden became the third wife of Henry. The only remarkable service of her is that she managed to give birth to the long-desired male heir who later became the King Edward VI. She has never been crowned as Queen of England but for her alone Henry wore mourning. She was not the last wife of the tyrant King, but after his death, Henry was buried at her side at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor.
  3.  With this woman Henry VIII had the longest marriage, though he was not her first husband. She tried hard to present him a son, but the only survived child of their couple was daughter Mary. This woman possessed a keen and smart mind and was rather interested in politics. Henry often turned to her for advice. Once she even ruled as regent while Henry was campaigning in France.
  4. She was the German princess by her birth. And first Henry saw his future wife on the portrait that greatly impressed him. But meeting her in life Henry was mostly displeased, though still married her because of the political motives. Their marriage was the most short-lived for only 6 months. After the divorce she was given the title of King’s sister and was happy to be presented life.
  5. This young lady was the cousin of former Henry’s executed wife Anne Boleyn. She was one of the court maiden of another Henry’s wife Anne of Cleves. Being lively, pretty and kind she seldom refused her attention to the young court men. Henry called her a “rose without thorn” but soon she was accused of infidelity and beheaded at Tower Green, London.
  6. The exact day of this woman’s birth is actually unknown. She differed greatly in her appearance from the other wives of Henry. Her beauty was far from the model which was common for those times. To marry this lady Henry VIII had to undertake the most significant step, which influenced the history of the whole country. She gave birth to the second daughter of the King Elizabeth. The end of her life was tragic; she was accused of the treason that she didn’t commit in reality.

(After filling in the table the pupils give reasons for their choice aloud, recollecting the facts from the tape)
