В-1There are not many theatres in my town, but they are all very popular with the public. I am a theatre lover, too. As for me, I prefer drama to all other theatres, but I also like opera and musical comedy.

I’ll never forget my first visit to the Opera and Ballet Theatre. My friend and I wanted to see the famous ballet “Swan Lake” by Tchaikovskyi. We bought the tickets in advance and came to the theatre half an hour before the show. At 7 sharp the performance began. From the very first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage. The costumes were fine. The dancing and music were thrilling. The ballet seemed to me a fairy-tale. I had never seen anything more wonderful. My friend also enjoyed every minute of it. When the curtain fell at the end of the performance, there came a storm of applause. It seemed that it would never end. The dancers received call after call. They were presented with large bouquets of flowers. We also applauded enthusiastically. The performance was a great success.

В-2Cinema was invented by two brothers Lumier. They made the first film, which lasted only one minute. Since then cinema has become one of the most popular arts in the world.There are cinema theatres everywhere.Films may be feature or documentary, sound and silent. Feature films are, as a rule, sound and colour. Animated cartoons are also very popular not only with children but with the adults.

Nowadays we can see different kinds of films. There are ones, which are dedicated to the life of the people, to the present and to the history of our country. There are also comedies, thrillers, dramas and detective films.

People’s opinions differ in the question what kinds of films must be produced. Some people, especially young, think that the cinema should be a place where one may amuse oneself after a working day. Others say that films must be various, serious and funny.

I think that cinema is not so popular today as at the beginning of the century, because now each family has a TV set or even a video recorder, and people do not want to go anywhere if they can sit in comfortable armchairs and watch what they want. Video films attract many young people now.

В-3Cinematograph is one of the wonders of the modern world. In 1895 the Lumiere brothers gave the world's first real cinema show in Paris to an audience of thirty-three spectators. The first film they showed was "The Arrival of a train at a Station". Moving pictures seemed so real that the audience was frightened to death by the train rushing at them from the screen. Cinematograph is really an art of our time. Everyone can find something to his liking in the broad variety of its genres. For example: horror films, thriller films, popular science films, mystery films, documentaries, and animated cartoons. Besides films may be color or black-and-white, full-length or short, sound or silent, dubbed or have subtitles.Cinema has got an important role in the life of any society. Cinema has become a part of the modern way of life. There is no denying that cinema is an important part of our culture.Modern cinema halls are comfortable. There are many rows with convenient seats in the hall. It’s possible for everyone to see the screen clearly. The quality of the sound has changed a lot. At the present time we can enjoy the Dolby Digital surround sound. In most cinemas you can buy a snack or a drink. The most popular of these are popcorn and coca-cola.We can’t imagine our everyday life without TV.

В-4 We can see films either in the cinema or on the TV. As I am often short of time, I have practically no time for going to the cinema. For this reason I see films on television more frequently. But sometimes I manage to go to the cinema. I prefer feature films and amusing comedies. It’s a pity the life is so difficult nowadays and I want to relax a little, sometimes even to laugh. But at the same time I am fond of true-to-life films describing the life of the ordinary people, their feelings and problems. Such films move me deeply, they arouse the feelings of sympathy or hatred for the heroes. A modern cinema program contains a newsreel which shows us pictures of important recent developments. It is usually shown before a feature film and it’s often worth seeing. Sometimes they show animated cartoon film at seeing which the audience is in a state of excitement from the beginning to the end. Especially I like Walt Disney’s cartoons “Duck Tales”, or “Vinnie-the-Pooh’s Adventures”. In my opinion the animated cartoon films are popular both with children and adults.

В-5Cinema plays an important role in the life of any society. It is an available popular form of art. Lots of people find going to the cinema one of the best ways of spending their leisure time. The movie audience is predominantly a young one. As for me, I’m fond of going to the cinema. It’s a pity, I don’t always have time for it. It’s an open secret that we live in a very difficult time now. But people do need something amusing and pleasant, something to laugh at. That’s why I give my preference to comedies. The last comedy, I saw, is “Crocodile Dandy”. The film tells about amusing adventures of a young lovely woman – reporter and a strong and brave crocodile hunter. At first, their relations were not friendly. She even looked down on him and he in return neglected her. But after he rescued her out of some difficult situations, their relations became more friendly. A happy end is an essential; feature of American films. The same is true of this comedy. The main characters fall in love with each other in the end of the film.

В-6Although I am not a theatre-goer, I never miss a chance to see a good play. There are a lot of theatres in Moscow. But even now it is very difficult to get tickets for really good performances. It's next to impossible to get tickets to the Bolshoy Theatre on a Sunday night. The house is sold out in advance.
But once I was lucky to get tickets to the Bolshoy Theatre. "The Sleeping Beauty" was on.I bought tickets at the box-office of the theatre. I knew that the best and most expensive seats were in the stalls and the dress-circle. The seats in the upper circle pit and gallery were cheaper. The seats in the stalls were sold out. I took box number six in the dress-circle. It was very well placed and we could have a good view of the stage.The Bolshoy Theatre is a magnificent building. We arrived at the theatre ahead of time. I hate coming at the last moment. Having produced our tickets, we passed through the entrance hall and went to the cloak room, where we left our hats and coats. The usher led us to our seats.
At last the curtain went up. The scenery was beautifully set up. The Bolshoy Theatre is famous for its excellent performances. Its productions are always a success and have a very long run. We enjoyed "The Sleeping Beauty". Music and dances were perfect. The leading lady was marvellous. At the end of the acts the audience applauded the dancers. The theatre was full. There was hardly any vacant place. "The Sleeping Beauty" made deep impression on me.
