Episode 1

This is the year 2035. Everybody in the world relies on a huge system of robots, which are programmed specifically to help humans and not harm them in any way. But one person does not think that robots are helpful.

Tapescript

Voice: Say goodbye to upgrade and service cаlls. An uplink to USR’s central computer…provides this state-of-the art robot with new programs  daily. The Nestor class 5 is tomorrow’s robot today.

Welcome to U.S. Robotics. You have entered the garage-level lobby. Please use the elevators for direct access to the main level concourse. Thank you.

-We gotta be smart about this. Let’s deal with it later.

Robertson: Detective.

Mr Spooner: Lawrence Robertson. Richest man in the world. I’ve seen you on television.

Robertson: Can I offer you coffee?

Mr Spooner: Sure, why not. It’s free, right?

Robertson: I don’t  think anyone saw this coming. You know, I should have, I suppose, I knew him 20 years. Alfred practically invented robotics. He wrote the Three Laws. But I guess brilliant people often have the most persuasive demons. So whatever I can help you?

Mr Spooner: Sugar

Robertson: I’m sorry?

Mr Spooner: Sugar

Robertson: It’s on the table.

Robertson: - Don’t misunderstand my impatience.

Mr Spooner: - Oh, no. Go.Go.

Mr Spooner: A really big week for your folks around here. You gotta put a robot in every home. Look, this is not what I do , but I got an idea for one of your commercials. You could see a carpenter making a beautiful chair. Then one of your robots comes and makes a better chair twice as fast. Then you superimpose on the screen, “USR:  little guy”. That would be the fade-out.

Robertson: Yeah, I see. I suppose your father lost his job to a robot. Maybe you’d have banned the internet to keep the libraries open. Prejudice never shows  much reason. No, you know , I suspect you simply don’t like their kind.

Mr Spooner: Well, you got a business to run around here.

Robertson: Ill send someone to escort you.

Mr Spooner: Thank you very much.
