Education is an important part of British life.

Education is free and compulsory for all children between the ages of 5 - 16. Some children are educated at home rather than in school.

About 94 per cent of pupils in England attend free state schools while 6 per cent go to fee paying private schools.

The school year runs from September to July and is 39 weeks long.

Children normally start primary school at the age of four or five.

Then, from 11 to 16 they attend secondary schools.

There are 2 types of state secondary schools in England. They are comprehensive schools and grammar schools.

Almost all secondary pupils go to comprehensive schools. Comprehensive schools are non-selective, they do not select pupils according to their abilities. They are co-educational (boys and girls study together there).

Grammar schools are selective, the entrance is based on a test of ability. They are single-sex schools (boys and girls don’t study together there).

There are also private, or public, schools in England. These schools are not free. Parents pay for their children to go to these schools.  The most famous public schools are Eton, Harrow and Winchester.

English children wear school uniform. A boy’s uniform includes a school cap, a tie, a white shirt, a jumper or a sweater and trousers. A girls uniform consists of a hat, a coat, a skirt and a blouse. The uniforms are usually dark.
