IDEAS ON CULTURE

DO ALL MEMBERS OF A SOCIETY SHARE ONE CULTURE?

Traditional societies usually share a common culture. People who live in larger, more diverse societies share a mainstream culture, with which most people can identify. Societies may also have SUBCULTURES, alongside their normal cultures, often based on shared values or interests, especially among immigrants and young people.

North America’s Amish people choose to separate themselves from mainstream US culture. Most Amish live without modern innovations such as electricity or engines, because their religion encourages them to question the need for change. Like their plain clothing, this sets them apart from those outside their culture.

IS THERE A GLOBAL CULTURE?

Cultures spread and influence one another as a result of increased trade and communication, and modern technology has brought the world’s cultures closer than ever. Some cultural events, such as a Hollywood movie, are shared across the world—but local aspects of culture, such as language or myth, remain the most powerful cultural influences in most people’s lives.

DO CULTURES CHANGE?

Cultures emerge from the growing history and experiences of a society, or its TRADITION. Rapid social change and revolution can cause changes in culture. Cultures also change as people make contact with other cultures. Greater global communications and opportunities to travel allow people across the world to study and learn from other cultures.

Subculture

Subculture is the culture of those who are dissatisfied with  their place in society. Different subcultures have their own beliefs, value systems, fashion, and favourite music. There are many subcultures such as Hippies, Punks, Mods, Rockers, Ravers and many others. Generally they are young people with low self-respect, who do poorly at school. They oppose the traditional world where they are as fiasco elements.

Today the life of many young people in Russia as well as in other countries of the world is influenced by popular culture. The young follow  certain stereotypes that are imposed  on them through TV, movies, and music. In their lifestyle they try to imitate the images of their idols. Young people are sports and music fans. They follow their idols in their tours and support them. Unfortunately they are intolerant to those who don't share  their view. It's a specific aspect of the youth subculture that can't be ignored.

But many young people have other interests. For some of them getting knowledge is of primary importance. They are fond of reading serious books, listening to serious music. They go to the conservatory and theatres.

Subcultures are not that bad as they are thought to be. Teens want to show off . But at the same time a lot of teens think about changing the world to the best. Subcultures are for teens. It is not a fan club, it is a real life. It seems to them that the parents are always saying: No! That everything about them: their hair, their music, clothes, the way they talk, their dreams are considered bad by grown-ups. The young people are unsure of where they are going. So it's a way of having something that they can say they belong to and that they are "whatever".

What do teens think of it?

  • Anthony: It seems to the kids that the parents are always saying______! That everything about us, our hair, our __________, our clothes, the way we talk, our heroes, our dreams, all are considered bad by the generation who can’t stop patting itself on the back over how democratic and liberal it is.
  • Dick: I think? The inspiration to form a youth ___________ comes out of a combination of fashion, style and music. And that often it’s the particularity of the __________, which then gathers a group and then extends and develops.
  • Roger: You want to know when you’re 14, 15, 16, 17, you want to know who you are and try out all sort of options. The way you ________, or the way you __________will tell you and everybody else something about the person you need to be.
  • Tracy: In many ways the elder generation _____________________________the younger, because so much has increased in complexity. Besides the youth always tend to ___________________________
  • Angela: You’re unsure of where you’re going. Some people know exactly where they are going but most ______________ don’t have an idea, and it’s the way of, having something that they can say they belong to and that they are a “whatever”.
