Task I.

Choose the correct verb form. Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect Simple or Past Perfect  Continuous.

1. Ann had just (got/been getting) home when I phoned.

2. We were extremely tired at the end of the journey. We had (travelled/been travelling) for more than 24 hours.

3. I was sad when I sold my car. I had (had/been having) it for a very long time.

4. Mary was sitting on the ground. She was out of breath. She had (run/been running).

5. In the evening I was very tired because I had (cleaned/ been cleaning) my house since morning.

6. The house was dirty. They had not (cleaned/been cleaning) it for weeks.

7. When I (to come) home yesterday, I (to see) that my little brother (to break) my pen and (to play) with its pieces.

 8. When I (to open) the door of the classroom, I (to see) that the teacher already (to come) and the pupils (to write) a dictation.

 9. When I (to come) home, my sister (to read) a book which she (to bring) from the library.

Task II.

 Choose the correct verb form. Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect Simple or Past Perfect Continuous.

1. I knew the facts of the case because I had (read/been reading) the report.

2. My eyes ached because I had (read/been reading) for three hours.

3. The children were dirty. They had (played/been playing) in the garden, and they were covered in mud.

4. I was very nervous at the beginning of the match. I had never (played/been playing) before.

5. Donald was very angry. He had (worked/been working) in the kitchen all morning, and no one had offered to help him.

5. When father (to come) home, we (to cook) the mushrooms which we (to gather) in the wood.

 6. When I (to see) Ann, she (to sort) the flowers which she (to pick) in the field.

Task IV.

Choose the correct verb form.  Past Simple, Past Continuous or Past Perfect.

1. Last night we (to go) to a football match and we (to take) a bus.

2.  The bus (to be) overcrowded as many people (to want) to see the match. We (to get) off the bus and (to go) in the direction of the stadium.

3. While we (to cross) the road, I (to see) Victor. He (to stand) at the corner.

4. He said he (to wait) for his friend who (to come) to St. Petersburg the day before and (to wish) to see the new stadium.

5. A man (to come) up to me and asked if I (to have) a spare ticket for the match.

6.Victor told us that two boys just (to ask) him whether he (to have) a spare ticket.
