On any other night!

Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls

Grinning goblins fighting duels

Werewolves rising from their tombs,

Witches on their magic brooms.

Pupil 3:

In masks and gowns we haunt the street

And knock on doors for trick or treat.

Tonight we are the king and queen,

For all tonight it’s Halloween!

Teacher 1: Good morning our dear boys, girls and guests of our lesson.

Teacher 2: We are very glad to see you here!

Teacher 1: Our lesson today is called «A bit of Halloween History». Today we are going to speak about this holiday, to learn new words, and to play funny games.

Teacher 2: Dear friends, can you answer these questions:

1. What are the most popular activities on Halloween?

2. What is the origin of Halloween?

3. What does the word "Halloween" mean?

4. What is trick-or-treating?

5. What is jack-o'-lantern?

(Учащиеся не знают ответы на данные вопросы, за исключением первого вопроса)

Teacher 1: Let us tell you about this holiday, about its origin, its name and traditions.

Teacher 2: Like many other holidays Halloween has evolved and changed throughout history. Over 2000 years ago people called the Celts lived in what is now Ireland, the UK, and parts of Northern France. The 1st of November was their New Year’s Day.

Teacher 1: The Celts believed that the night before the New Year (October the 31st) was a time when the living and the dead came together. This holiday called Samhain. You will ask me, why Samhain? In their legends Samhain was the Lord of the Death and Prince of Darkness, called together all the dead people.

Teacher 2: More than a thousand years ago the Christian Church named November the 1st «All Saint Day» (Also called «All Hallows»). This was a special day to honor the saints and other and other people who died for their religion. The night before «All Hallows» was called «Hallows Eve». Later the name was changed to Halloween.

Teacher 1: Like the Celts the Europeans of that time also believed that the spirits of the dead would visit the Earth on Halloween. They worried that evil spirits would cause problems or hurt them. So that night people wore costumes that looked like ghosts or other evil creatures. They thought if they dressed like that, the spirits would think they were also dead and not to harm them. Thus appeared the tradition to wear various costumes on this holiday.

Teacher 2: The tradition of Halloween was carried to America by the immigrating Europeans. Some of the traditions changed a little, for example, on Halloween in Europe some people would carry lanterns made from turnips. In America pumpkins were more common. So people began putting candles inside them and using them as lanterns.

Teacher 1: That is why you see Jack’s lantern today. But do you know why is it called Jack? An Irish legend says that jack-o'-lanterns are named after the man called Jack. He could not enter heaven because he was a miser, and he could not enter hell because he had played jokes on devil. As a result, Jack has to walk on the earth with his lantern until Judgment Day.

Teacher 2: And as you know children like this holiday. They dress up as witches, ghosts, goblins, hags, monsters, devils, vampires, werewolves or anything else scary like Frankenstein and others.  Boys and girls take pumpkins and bags and go along the streets, knock on the door of the houses. They knock on doors and say «trick or treat». Who knows what does it mean?

People give them a treat – an apple, some sweets, pieces of a pie. If they don’t, children play a trick on them.

Teacher 1: And now let’s review this information in a small video.

Teacher 2: And after that be ready answer those questions.

(Учащиеся смотрят видео, после видео высвечивается слайд с вопросами, которые были заданы в начале урока)

Teacher 1: Who wants to answer the 1st question? What are the most popular activities on Halloween?

Pupil 4: Usually on this holiday children wear various costumes and go house to house, they knock on doors and say «trick or treat».

Teacher 2: Who wants to answer the second question? What is the origin of Halloween?

Pupil 5: Over 2000 years ago people called the Celts lived. They have New Year on the 1st of November. But before it, on the 31st of October they have Samhain.

Teacher 1: Why was it called Samhain?

Pupil 5: Samhain, according to the Irish legend, was a Lord of Darkness, and called all the dead come together.

Teacher 2: What does the word "Halloween" mean?

 (Далее идет обсуждение вопросов)

Teacher 1: And now let’s learn new words. We have one more video for you. Here you can see how words connected with the Halloween you may use in a daily life.

 (Смотрят видео)

Teacher 2: You have seen this video and we have a task for you. There are sheets of paper with different vocabulary on your tables. Your task is to come with your own sentences connected with daily life. You should be divided into two groups, and members of the group which create more sentences will be winners!

(Учащиеся выполняют задание)

Teacher 1: Your time is over! Let’s check!

Teacher 2: The first group read your sentences, please.

Teacher 1: Now, the turn of the second group…

(Проверяем предложения учащихся, выясняем, чья группа составила больше предложений)
