Saransk is one of the major sport centers in Volga region because of the conditions made for the development of amateur and professional sports. In the city there are such large sport facilities as the Republican Sports Palace, the Ice Palace, the Sport Complex " Mordovia ", Leonid Arkaev Sports Center, sport and health clubs, as well as gyms. In Mordovia there is a great number of sports schools, training outstanding athletes .

In the Republic of Mordovia much attention is paid to the development of mass physical culture, children’s, youth and professional sport. It is one of the priorities in the regional social policy. The republic possesses all modern sports facilities to host competitions of Russian and international levels. Presently 2112 sports facilities operate in the republic (including 1193 – in the rural area). Among them: 7 – stadiums with stands for more than 1500 places, 1268 – horizontal sports facilities (including 201 football fields), 547 gyms, 7 indoor facilities with synthetic ice, 3 athletics arenas, 5 cycle tracks, 26 swimming pools, 25 skiing centres , biathlon centre , 56 facilities for shooting sport, 167 other facilities

The provision of the population with gyms in Mordovia makes 77 per cent, with swimming pools – 14 per cent, with horizontal sports facilities – 84 per cent .

In 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games Aleksey Mishin (wrestler) from Saransk won the gold medal. Race walkers Denis Nizhegorodov and Aleksey V Voyevodin (from neighbour Penza) won the silver and bronze medals respectively. In 2008 Olga Kaniskina , Valeriy Borchin and Denis Nizhegorodov won two gold and one bronze Olympic medals. In 2009 Olga Kaniskina , Valeriy Borchin and Sergey Kirdyapkin won all the gold at the World Championship in Berlin. They won at all distances in race walking. In 2010 Olga Kaniskina , Anisya Kirdyapkina and Vera Sokolova won all three medals in the women's race walking competition for 20 kilometers at the European Championships in Barcelona . Other race walkers from Mordovia include: Elena Lashmanova , Olena Shumkina , Irina Stankina , Sergey Bakulin , Stanislav Emelyanov , Vladimir Kanaykin , Sergey Kirdyapkin (married to Anisya ), Sergey Morozov and Roman Rasskazov .

In 2014 Mordovia was chosen among the 12 regions as an experimental ground for determining norms of physical training among school children and students in the framework of the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on the introduction of physical and sport complex “Ready for Labour and Defence ”. In the last two years more than 80 thousand people have been tested.

In 2015 1449 republican, Russian and international competitions were held. Approximately 255 thousand people participated in them. More than 90 thousand school children took part in district stages of the President Sport Games and the President Competitions. Competitions among children and young people “Leaver Ball”, “Golden Disk”, “White Castle” are held on the annual basis. Russian sports events such as: Winter Rural Sport Games, XXXIII open mass start “Russian Ski Track”, mass competitions in speed skating “Ice of our Hope”, in sport orienteering “Russian Azimuth”, day of running “Cross-Country Race of Nations” have been held.

In 2015 sportsmen from Mordovia training wrestling, BMX-sport, rowing and canoeing, boxing, football and hockey, figure-skating, etc., gained significant success in Russian and international competitions. In 2015 sportsmen from Mordovia at the age of under 23 won 222 medal places at different competitions and championships of Russia, Europe and the World .

The Conception for the Development of Information and Communication Infrastructure in the framework of preparation and holding matches of the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Saransk was approved by the Decree of the Republic of Mordovia Government of October 23, 2015 No. 816-P. Press-tour for international mass-media in the framework of the preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2018 was held. 20 international journalists visited Saransk and positively evaluated the city. More than 20 publications in printed and internet editions followed . Official tourist and information portal of the Republic of Mordovia is regularly updated, technically supported and promoted. 10 tourist products including 8 excursion routes (“ Shumbrat , Saransk!”, “Sporting Saransk”, “Ethnic Mordovia”, “Mordovia Land Beginnings”, “Reserve Land”, “ Mordovian Land Relics”, “Land of Bell-Ringing”, “ Pegas ”) and 2 multi-day tourist programmes (“Weekend in Saransk” and “Winter Holidays in Saransk”) have been developed .

«Mordovia Arena» Football stadium under construction in Saransk. According to the FIFA decision on 2 December 2010 and the Russian bid, the stadium will host matches of the world football championship 2018. It is assumed that the arena will be home to FC "Mordovia". Construction is carried out at the expense of the Federal budget and the budget of Mordovia Republic .
