(7 класс)

Тип урока: комбинированный с использованием элементов технологии развития критического мышления.

Методы: стимулирование обучения, самостоятельная частично – поисковая работа учащихся, наглядно – визуальный метод

Тема: Thanksgiving Day

Цель урока: формирование лексических навыков, развитие умений продуктивной речи на основе предложенного текста, отработка Past Simple, Present Simple, Imperative mood.

Развивающий компонент цели урока: развитие языковых, познавательных способностей учащихся, развитие готовности к коммуникации на основе предложенного речевого материала.

Образовательный компонент цели урока: расширение лингвистического и общего кругозора, развитие способности анализировать, выделять главное, совершенствование навыков поискового чтения.

Воспитательный компонент цели урока: создание условий для формирования у учащихся толерантного отношения к традициям и обычаям других народов.

Практический компонент цели урока: практическое использование приобретённых знаний в развёрнутом монологическом высказывании для обеспечения коммуникативных потребностей.

Т:  Good afternoon, children. We are ready to begin our lesson. You know much about traditions of  the USA. It is the last Thursday of November. Today American people celebrate one of their national holidays. You’ll know about history, symbols and about traditions of this day. Look at the blackboard and tell me what holiday it is.

S: It is Thanksgiving Day.

T: You’re absolutely right! The topic of our lesson is Thanksgiving Day in America.

The history of Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is on the fourth Thursday in November.

Thanksgiving started over 380 years ago with Pilgrims. The Pilgrims who sailed to America were originally members of the English Separatist Church. They wanted to escape religious persecution.

In the hope of a better life, they decided to move out to America. They sailed to a new continent on board the ship "Mayflower". The Pilgrims reached Plymouth in 1620. There, they had a terrible winter. Many of them died. But the harvest of the next year was very good. And the remaining colonists decided to make a party.

They also invited Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. The Indians taught the Pilgrims to plant corn. The feast lasted three days. Wild turkey and corn were part of their feast.

 Now Thanksgiving is a national holiday. People are with their families and friends to give thanks for the good things in their lives. The families come together for a special dinner.

 Thanksgiving Parade is an important tradition. It was first held in the year 1924. The Parade is famously known for its policy of going on under any circumstance or condition; be it rain or shine.

 More than four hundred years have passed, but Americans still celebrate this holiday exactly the way as the Pilgrims had done it. The whole family comes together this day. The celebration begins with dancing, joking and laughing. But the moment comes... and everybody sits down at the table and becomes serious.

 In the center of the table you can see a sheet of foil symbolizing the Atlantic Ocean. In the middle of it there is a small ship. It remembers us about that ship "Mayflower", which was used by the Pilgrims. As the edge of the "ocean" there is a little stone with the date "1620" written on it. It symbolizes the rock, where more than 400 years ago the first settlers from Europe landed.

  1. In pairs make up a cinquaine related to the topic of our lesson. Remember: you need 2 adjectives, 3 verbs, a phrase and a noun.

4.   T: What’s traditional American food for every Thanksgiving Day?

S: It’s a turkey.

T: Yes. Americains like turkey. Now we’re going to watch a video and find out how to cook a perfect turkey. A world-famous chef, Gordon Ramsay, will share his recipe with us. Arrange the sentences in a logical order.

Ingredients:

1 free-range turkey (ideally Norfolk Black or Bronze), about 5–5.5kg.

sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

2 onions, peeled and halved.

1 lemon, halved.

1 head of garlic, halved horizontally.

6 bay leaves.

olive oil, to drizzle.

8 rashers of smoked streaky bacon.

  1. Roast the turkey in the hot oven for 10–15 minutes. Take the tray out of the oven, baste the bird with the pan juices and lay the bacon rashers over the breast to keep it moist. Baste again. Lower the setting to 180°C/Gas 4 and cook for about 2 1⁄2 hours (calculating at 30 minutes per kg), basting occasionally.
  2. Stuff half the butter mix into the opened spaces under the skin. From the outside of the skin, gently massage the butter around the breasts so that the meat is evenly covered. Finally, insert the rest of the bay leaves under the skin of the breasts.
  3. Preheat the oven to 220°C/Gas 7. Meanwhile, prepare the herb butter. Put the butter into a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add the olive oil and mix well. Add the lemon zest and juice, crushed garlic and chopped parsley. Mix well to combine.
  4. Remove the giblets from the turkey cavity. Season the cavity well with salt and pepper, then stuff with the onions, lemon, garlic halves and 2 bay leaves.
  5. Place the bird in a large roasting tray, breast side up. Spread the rest of the butter all over the skin. Season well with salt and pepper, then drizzle with a little olive oil. (If preparing a day ahead, cover the turkey with foil and refrigerate at this stage.)
  6. Transfer the turkey to a warmed platter and remove the parson’s nose, wings and tips of the drumsticks; reserve these for the gravy. Leave the turkey to rest in a warm place for at least 45 minutes; make the gravy in the meantime. Remove the bay leaves from under the skin before carving. Serve the turkey with the piping hot gravy, stuffing and accompaniments.
  7. With your hands, loosen the skin on the breast from both ends of the bird so that you will be able to stuff the flavoured butter underneath it, making sure you keep the skin intact. Repeat with the skin on the legs – from the lower side of the breast feel your way under the skin and out towards the leg, loosening the gap.
  8. To test whether your turkey is cooked, insert a skewer into the thickest part of the leg and check that the juices are running clear, rather than pink. As oven temperatures and turkey shapes and sizes vary, it is crucial to check your turkey about 30 minutes before the calculated roasting time. If the juices are pink, roast for another 15 minutes and check again. Repeat if necessary until the turkey is cooked.
