Pavel Tretyakov was a Russian merchant who came up with the idea of making a collection of the best works of art after visiting the Hermitage in 1852. The museum and the theatre of Saint Petersburg impressed the merchant so immensely, that he purchased his first paintings for his collection at Sukharevsky market in Moscow a year later.

Slide 3. The year of foundation of the gallery is considered to be 1856. Just then Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov became the owner of the first two paintings by great Russian artists ‘’Temptation’’ by N.G. Shilder and ‘’A skirmish with Finnish Smugglers’’ by V.G. Khudyakov

In 1867 the gallery turned into a real museum, opening its doors to the public for the first time. Originally, only members of the Imperial family had an opportunity to visit the gallery. The gallery included 1,276 000 paintings, 471 drawings, 10 sculptures by Russian artists, as well as 84 paintings by foreign masters.

There are 106 halls in the Tretyakov gallery. The whole collection is divided into paintings, graphics, iconography and sculpture. The exposition in Lavrushensky Lane, located in 62 halls is organized in chronological order and includes 7 sections. Now the area of the gallery is about 36 thousand square kilometres.

The most enormous painting in the gallery is rightfully considered ‘’ The appearance of Christ before the people’’. The canvas belongs to the brush of Alexander Ivanov. The impressive size of the picture is 7,5 metres by 5,4 metres. It took the artist about 20 years to paint it.

During the World War the second the collection of the Tretyakov gallery dispersed across the country. Most of the works were evacuated to Novosibirsk, some works moved to the city of Molotov.

The gallery hosts one mystical painting. The painting is ‘’Ivan the Terrible, his son Ivan’’ by I.Repin.

There were some attempts to vandalize the picture. Vandalists tried to destroy the masterpiece with a knife. Fortunately, the painting was successfully restored and opened to the public again.

The Tretyakov gallery is based on the collections of two Tretyakov brothers, Pavel and Sergei, who collected Western paintings.

Tretyakov’s will contains one specific condition. The admission to the gallery should be free of charge for future generations.
