The Great Train Robbery is one of the most famous crimes in British history. But why? Well, it's hard to say. Other robbers stole more money, such as the men who stole 53 million pounds from a security depot in 2006, and other robberies were more violent. Nobody died during the Great Train Robbery, and the robbers only took 2.6 million. Not only that, but the Great Train Robbery took place many years ago - on 8th August 1963, in fact.

So what happened? Well, 15 armed robbers stopped a train that was travelling from Glasgow to London by changing a green 'go' light to a red 'stop' light on the railway line. When the train stopped, the robbers got on the train and told the driver to take it to the next bridge. They didn't use guns but they hit the train driver on the head with an iron bar, hurting him badly. The robbers put the money into bags, and then, at the bridge, they took the bags off the train and put them into cars that were waiting for them. It was very well organized, and all the robbers escaped.

The robbers went to a farmhouse in the English countryside and waited for two days. They played a game called Monopoly, because they were bored. The problem was that they didn't wear gloves while they were playing the game. When the police arrived at the farmhouse five days later, the robbers weren't there, but the police found their fingerprints on the Monopoly game. The police soon arrested the robbers in London, and they all went to prison.

a How much money did the robbers steal in the Great Train Robbery?

b How did the robbers stop the train?

c What did the robbers do to the train driver?

d How did the robbers take the money away?

e Where did the police catch the robbers?

1. Read the text and answer the questions.

The United Nations defines illiteracy as the inability to read and write a simple message in any language. So how many people in the world can't read or write? Well, in 1957 a United Nations survey discovered that 44% of the world's population was illiterate. This was a huge and worrying number at the time, but later surveys showed that illiteracy rates fell after that. A 1978 study, for example, showed the illiteracy rate to have dropped to 32.5%. In 1990, a further study showed the illiteracy rate worldwide to have dropped to about 27%, and by 1998 it was at about 16%.

However, a study by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), published in 1998, predicted that worldwide illiteracy would increase again in the future. In 2000, a UNICEF study discovered that only a quarter of the world's children were at school. This is a potentially disastrous development, because if the number of children in schools across the world falls, illiteracy will start to increase once more.

UNICEF is interested in building schools and training teachers around the world, because this is the best way to end illiteracy. And the war against illiteracy is an important one. The world's poorest  people are usually illiterate.

  1. How much of the world's population was illiterate in 1957?
  2.  By how much did illiteracy rates in the world fall between 1957 and 1998?

  1. Read the text. Then decide if the statements below are true (T) or false (F).

My family and I have just moved house, so I've had to change schools. My old school was called Apple Tree College and was very small and friendly, but my new school is much bigger and much stricter than my old one. It's called Hangham High, and it's got more rules than the government!

For example, at Apple Tree College we could wear what we wanted, but at Hangham High we have to wear a really horrible school uniform. And if you don't wear it correctly, you get into trouble. When we walk round the school we mustn't run or shout, and we have to stay on the left side of the corridor so that other people can walk past us in the opposite direction. Obviously, we weren't allowed to run or shout at my old school, but we could walk along the corridor any way we wanted. I think it's crazy that we have to walk on the left, even when there's nobody else in the corridor!

Another thing that is very annoying is the rule that we have to carry our bags at our sides in school. We can't put them on our backs. Sometimes our bags are really heavy, so it's awful when you have to carry them. Of course, some rules are good. We mustn't drop litter, we can't smoke, and we have to arrive before 8.35 in the morning. If you're late, you have to sign the 'late register', and ifyou sign it three times the school sends a letter to your parents.

  1. Read the text and answer the questions.

How much do you know about famous painters and sculptors? Well, in this week's World Art magazine, we're going to study the life and work of the famous artist Alberto Giacometti.

Alberto was born in 1901. He was brought up in Borgonovo, a small town in Switzerland, where his father was a painter. Alberto was always interested in painting and sculpture. He was taught art at the School of Fine Arts in Geneva, and then moved to Paris in 1922 to study sculpture. He was influenced by other famous artists of the time, including Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro.

Alberto Giacometti became famous for his sculptures of people and animals. However, his sculptures are very strange. They are made of metal and are very thin, with long legs and bodies and big, flat heads. As he got older, Giacometti's sculptures got bigger and thinner. He liked to use the same person as a model many times, and his younger brother, Diego, was often used.

In 1962, Giacometti was awarded the grand prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale, an important art exhibition. The award made him famous, and his works were shown in a number of large exhibitions throughout Europe. Unfortunately, however, he was very ill, and in 1966 he died of heart disease.
