Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

All diamonds are formed under immense heat and pressure beneath the earth and are brought to the surface in volcanic eruptions. They are formed between 100 miles underground. Most are found  inside a volcanic rock and mined in areas where volcanic activity is still common. Any other diamonds are found loose.

Twenty countries in the world produce diamonds. South Africa is now the fifth largest. Diamonds are made of pure carbon. So is graphite, the stuff  that the lead in pencils is made from, but with the carbon atoms arranged differently. Diamond is one of the hardest naturally occurring substances on earth, but graphite is one of the softest with a score of one and a half. The largest known diamond is 2,500 miles across and measures ten billion trillion trillion carats. Found directly above Australia the diamond sits inside the star Lucy.

Silver is the best conductor. The best conductor of both heat and electricity is also the most reflective of all the elements. Its drawback is that it is expensive. The reason we use copper wire in our electrical equipment is because copper – the second most conductive element – is much cheaper. As well as its decorative uses, silver is now mostly used in the photographic industry.

Silver has the curious property of sterilising water. Only tiny amounts are needed – just ten parts per billion. Both the Romans and Greeks noticed that food and drink put in silver containers did not spoil so quickly. Silver’s strong antibacterial qualities were made use of for many centuries before bacteria were discovered. This may also explain why silver coins are often found at the bottom of ancient wells. While silver will certainly kill bacteria in the lab, whether or not it will do so in the body is controversial. Many of the supposed advantages are unproven.

Celebrating New Year’s is a universal tradition, but countries see the New Year in with different customs. You are probably familiar with the New Year’s Eve traditions of your own country, but do you know what the holiday looks like elsewhere around the globe? While many countries have fireworks, some also have their own unique traditions and customs. Here's a taste of some of the ways different countries usher in the New Year. Spanish New Year’s Eve usually starts with a traditional family dinner, but perhaps the most notable tradition is the countdown to midnight. Just before the clock strikes midnight, 12 grapes should be eaten as quickly as possible. In Russia a popular tradition is to bid farewell to the last year and welcome in the new one. Shortly before midnight, many Russians tune in to watch the president’s speech on TV or watch popular New Year shows.

Пояснение. Hey, Kate. You know what? I’ve just found two pictures suitable for our project “Preparing for exams”. Let me tell you a bit more about them.

They are relevant to our project because in both pictures we can see students preparing for their exams. In the first photo there is a girl doing some tasks in her room. While in the second photo there is a group of students sitting around the table in the library and reading books. There are a few differences to illustrate our project better. For example, the first picture depicts an individual work, the girl is preparing for exams alone, maybe she is attending some online courses, whereas the second picture shows a group work, four students are preparing for exams together.

In my opinion, both ways of preparing for exams have their advantages. For instance, a student working alone can concentrate on studying and work at his own pace. At the same time, co-working provides the opportunity to share ideas and discuss various strategies. Of course, the ways of preparing for exams have disadvantages too. For example, an individual work can not enable students to ask for help if a problem seems to be too difficult. Meanwhile, working in a group can be awkward as everybody is chatting.

Personally, I prefer preparing for exams in my friends’ company as we can analyze, discuss and solve problems together. It helps me very much.

So, shall we use these photos in our project? Call me when you’re ready to discuss if we can use them. Bye-bye.

Пояснение. Hey, Kate. You know that? I’ve just found two pictures suitable for our project “Ways of fishing”. Let me tell you a bit more about them.

They are relevant to our project because in both pictures there are people going fishing. In the first photo there is a boat with two fishermen in it. There is a still water surface, perhaps it is a big lake or a sea very early in the morning. In the second photo there is a fisherman as well. He has just caught a fish and is trying not to lose it. He is staying on the shore of a lake. There are a few differences to illustrate our project better. Obviously, fishermen in the first picture don’t have any fish on the hook, while a man on the right has already caught his victim. Moreover, the first picture features two people on a boat, while the second one features a man standing on the ground.

In my opinion, both ways of fishing have their advantages. For instance, fishing with a boat can allow for a better and bigger catch. Meanwhile, fishing from the shore is safer. Of course, the ways of fishing have disadvantages too. As for going on a board, it requires more preparation. At the same time, there can be the lack of a big number of fish near the shore so it can lead to an unsuccessful fishing session.

Personally, I'd prefer to stay on the shore while fishing. I consider a calm and safe fishing day is better than going to the middle of a lake on a boat.

So, shall we use these photos in our project? Call me when you’re ready to discuss if we can use them. Bye-bye.

Пояснение. Hey, Kate. You know what? I’ve just found two pictures suitable for our project “Helping others”. Let me tell you a bit more about them.

They are relevant to our project because in both pictures there are people helping others. In the first photo there is a group of young people. All of them are wearing white t-shirts with a word «volunteer». In the second picture there is a man, helping an old lady to cross the street. It looks like he cares a lot about her. There are a few differences to illustrate our project better. Obviously, the first picture features an organization that needs volunteers to do some work. In the second picture a man isn’t a part of volunteer’s group, he is helping on his own accord. Moreover, in the first picture there is a group of people, while the second picture features only one person helping out.

In my opinion, the two ways of volunteering have their advantages. For instance, being a part of a volunteer group will allow someone to take part in different international projects, like big sporting events. Meanwhile, helping out strangers occasionally is great for helping those who don't ask for help themselves but actually need it. Of course, the ways of spending spare time have disadvantages too. As for being a volunteer, it requires much more time from a person, for examples, there are special courses and even exams. At the same time, helping people occasionally doesn’t give the opportunity to develop one’s skills like a volunteer organization does.

As for me, I’d like to be a volunteer, because I think that people should care about each other, no matter if they know each other or not. And being a part of voluntary movement provides opportunities to try myself in different fields.

So, shall we use these photos in our project? Call me when you’re ready to discuss if we can use them. Bye-bye.
