At the beginning of this year, I went to America. It was really exciting! I got a small part in a film called San Francisco. They filmed it in Hollywood. I met a lot of famous actors and actresses. It was fantastic!

From the outside, the houses of the future will probably look the same as the houses of today. But home technology will be very different. In the future there will be keys. You will press buttons on a special mobile phone to open the doors.
Each living room will have a big television. You will sit down on your sofa and just tell the TV to start playing your favouriteprogramme. And in your bedroom, you will probably have a giant screen on the wall so that you can watch films in bed.
The bathroom door will also be ‘intelligent’. It will lock automatically when you enter the bathroom.
The homes of the future will also be more energy-efficient. Thirty per cent of the electricity will come from solar energy and the house will recycle water from the bath, sink and shower to flush the toilets.
So how long will you have to wait for these houses of the future? No one knows. Some people think homes will be like this in 2050. Others say that homes are already changing at that things will be very different in only ten or fifteen years.

Вариант 1
Раздел 1 (задания по чтению)
- International space teams
- A new kind of tourism
- What to wear in space
- Space station equipment
- The problem with closed spaces
- Down-to-Earth training for space
- Early space projects
- Space garbage
- People have always dreamt about space travel and space discoveries. For the first time the dream came true when the unmanned satellite Sputnik was launched and scientists got the first photos of the Earth from outer space. However, the real breakthrough happened in 1961 when the first human, Yuri Gagarin, left our planet on the spacecraft Vostok and completed a full Earth orbit.
- Since then lots of people have volunteered for space missions but few are able to meet the strict requirements for candidates. Still on the Earth, the future astronauts do tests in simulated environments and solve problems they are supposed to face during the flight. They get ready physically and psychologically for different situations. They also practise how to operate the complicated space equipment and what to do in an emergency.
- Even wearing a spacesuit requires special skills. The main idea of the suit is to keep the person alive in outer space, during launch and landing, when the pressure on the body increases dramatically, or inside the space station, if something goes wrong. The suit is made from hard materials, contains its own oxygen supply and has lots of smart devices monitoring the condition of the astronaut.
- Obviously, no device can completely eliminate the risk of space travel - it will always be a dangerous activity, but it attracts people anyway. They are ready to pay big money for an out-of- this-world experience and the number of such people is constantly increasing. There are already business projects for space tours and designs for space stations stuffed with equipment for entertainment instead of scientific experiments.
- Not everyone supports the idea of idle space tourists, and there are reasons for this. Apart from unnecessary risk, it can add to the problem of space pollution. People have only started going into orbit very recently but they have already managed to leave lots of evidence of their existence there
- parts of old spacecraft and satellites are circling the Earth. Scientists say that if this increases, it may cause serious problems and dangerous situations.
- Nowadays, countries find it useful to combine their efforts when carrying out space exploration projects. The best engineers from all over the world participate in designing crafts and equipment, and astronauts working on the space station may be of different nationalities and backgrounds.
Theoretically speaking, it might cause some misunderstanding and culture clashes, but in practice this never happens.
G.Long space missions, however, are going to be a great challenge to the flight team whatever nationality they are. The astronauts will have to communicate only with each other and there will be no opportunity to escape unpleasant people. Psychologists believe that stress is a serious risk factor for the planned expedition to Mars.

А. The world’s first university was established in India in 700 BC, where more than 10,500 students from around the world studied more than 60 different subjects. The training was conducted in Sanskrit. Nowadays Sanskrit is considered to be the mother of all the European languages. Its elements can be traced in most of them.
B.The most frequently visited place in India is Delhi, the capital of the country. Itseems to be divided into two parts. New Delhi is a modern city with hi-tech architecture, tourist attractions and modern facilities. Old Delhi is several centuries old, with narrow streets, ancient churches and noisy bazaars. Lots of people live in slums without the most essential facilities like toilets and running water.
C.People all over the world know of India’s greatest river, the Ganges. It is the subject of thousands of prayers. The river looks extremely beautiful in the morning light. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges helps to cure all kinds of diseases and can improve your life in general. It has become a common ritual for pilgrims to gather by the river in the mornings.
D.The most famous and often visited Indian historic area is the Golden Triangle. It consists of the cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Lying in the south-east, Agra attracts tourists with its iconic image of the Taj Mahal palace, which is one of the eight wonders of the modern world. To the south-west is the colourful ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur, known for its Palace of Winds.
E.Indian climate differs from one part of the country to another. The air is cool and fresh in the mountains but in the plains it is usually very hot and dry so even a short trip can be very hard for an inexperienced traveller. That is why tourists are always glad to have a rest at one of the numerous stations in the hills. There they can enjoy a nice cup of real Indian tea, the most refreshing drink in such a climate.
F.India is not all history. It is also famous for its Bollywood industry, which produces love stories and action films. Indian films have always had their own style, rich in music and dancing. Though the industry is still developing, many of Indian film stars have received Oscar prizes and are known throughout the world. The home of Bollywood is Bombay, also known as a busy port and the country’s commercial centre.
G.There is an unusual treasure hidden in the Indian mountains. These are striking ancient temples cut in the rocks. For example, the Buddhist cave temples at Ajanta were built at least 2,000 years ago. Inside the caves on the walls tourists can see pictures of people’s lives and animal images. Some researchers believe that the interpretation of the images can help us to learn a lot about people’s lives in ancient times.

- Have you ever thought that it takes trees to make one copybook, and it takes 17 trees to make a ton of paper? Paper is made in paper mills. The logs are stripped of their bark and shredded into splinters on a special platform. Pulp is the main raw material for making paper. The most economical way to produce wood pulp is by mechanical means. The mill shreds the wood into small pieces and mixes them with water. It is the process used to make low-quality paper for newspapers. But for high-quality paper, such as for magazines, books, and brochures, a chemical process is used. Adhesives and resins are added into pulp to repel moisture and to prevent the flow of ink, which is often water-based. When paper is ready, it is sent to book factories. There, the paper is cut, creating books and notebooks.
- A few decades ago, in between classes the children used to go outside to play hopscotch: white squares with numbers appeared on the pavement, and the whole schoolyard was filled with the sound of children's laughter. There were ten squares or levels, just like the number of forms at school. So, to pass to the next level, it was necessary to skip over the squares on one or two feet, simultaneously pushing a special bit, without stepping on the line. It turns out, something like hopscotch was played back in ancient Rome. However, back then it was a game accessible only to boys. Was it discrimination? Not at all! It was a way for future warriors to train their stability, agility, stamina and the ability to keep their balance.
- There is an opinion that cars are a male-only business. But it isn't! Take the famous Mercedes, for example. Did you know that the car got its name from a woman? Back in 1900, a famous Austrian businessman Emil Ellinek, who was a co-owner of the company that produced cars, suggested that a new model of cars be named after his nine-year-old daughter — Mercedes. Mercedes was the nickname given to the girl at home. Her real name is Adriana Manuela Ramona Jellinek. In Spanish Mercedes means “mercy, grace,” in Latin — “a ; However, Mercedes herself did not express any interest in cars. She was more interested in music and singing. All the honours and glory of the name went to the cars and to the girl's father. In 1903, Mr Jellinek took his daughter's name as his middle name — Emile Jellinek-Mercedes.
- A stuffed toy bear is a toy that has become truly iconic; it's impossible to imagine a child's room without it. Experts have been trying to explain the toy bear phenomenon for more than a century. The wife of a Russian emigrant in the USA decorated her shop window with a toy bear cub, sewn from cloth and stuffed with sawdust. The customers liked it so much that they wanted to buy it. The shopkeeper had to set up production quickly. Soon, the shop owner asked the US President to use his name for the toy, and received his consent. Furthermore, there was an interesting story about President Theodore Roosevelt himself. He, being on a hunt, refused to shoot a bear cub. The story made the newspapers. So, in America, and later in Europe, stuffed toy bears became known as Teddy bears.
- A happy childhood is simply impossible without fairy tales. The story of Cinderella is one of the world‘s best-loved and most widely read. The first version of the tale was found on Egyptian papyrus. It tells the story of a charming girl named Rhodopis, who was kidnapped by pirates from Greece and sold into slavery to an Egyptian rich man. One day the girl went to the river to bathe and lost her sandals. They were stolen by a falcon flying by and carried to the Egyptian pharaoh. The point is that they were exclusive — they were too small. The astonished pharaoh immediately declared a nationwide search. And when he found the beautiful Rhodopis, he married her at once.
- Present day’s designers are incredible dreamers! And the Olympic mascots — their wacky creations - are the best proof of that! Intended to reflect the culture and traditions of the host countries of the Olympics, they surprise and attract, amuse and make us smile. A funny little star man became the mascot of the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville, France. The mascot is an expression of wishful thinking and the desire to reach for the stars. The touching mascot is a little reminder to participants and spectators of the Olympics that the games are not only about grades and strict rules, but also another step to self-improvement and achieving unheard-of heights.
- In order to draw even one cartoon character, artists put a lot of effort and apply all their skills and imagination. Thanks to rich imagination and extraordinary abilities of animators we can see the beautiful Snow White smile, Bambi the Reindeer play or the evil stepmother Maleficent cast spells. The appearance, movements and personality traits of the Disney characters were taken from various sources. Some characters were even copied from real people — models or actors who were specially invited to the studio for photo sessions. Prototypes were filmed, animators studied their movements in detail, and only after that they created the characters of our favourite Disney cartoons.

- Yakutia has launched a mobile school project for the children of reindeer herders. It is a caravan made up of two modules: a living room, which acts as a classroom, and a technical one, which houses a generator, a boiler room and a lavatory. It is important that the weight of the school allows it to be transported from one place to another by reindeer. When the school arrives at the campsite, several children (usually 6 - 8) and a couple of teachers gather there. In the past, the children of reindeer herders had to go far from their families to a boarding school for several school months. Now, mobile schools allow children to study without being separated from their families.
- In the mid-1970s, the electricity situation in America was bad - the energy industry was in crisis. Many homes were not even heated. So, the builders of a new school in Reston, Virginia, faced a challenge. When they realised there was no way to heat a large school building, they put it underground by fitting it into the local hillside and covering it with earth. This solved all the problems: the ground proved to be an excellent insulator, and the school was always warm. Despite the originality of the design, the teaching in the ‘underground school’ is very traditional, the curriculum of the junior school does not differ from that taught in other schools in the country.
- The school in the Netherlands was built hastily about 10 years ago. The situation was that the new buildings were growing rapidly, the school year was approaching, and there was nowhere for the children from the new houses to study. They came up with a quick solution - they created a temporary shelter out of huge industrial shipping containers painted in bright colours. But the colourful “cubes” appealed so much to the pupils and their parents that they decided to keep the “temporary” school even when the main school building was built. Such premises do not need expensive repairs, they are easy to move and expand, adapting the space to the needs of the pupils.
- Orestad Gymnasium in Denmark is built on the principles of open space. There are senior school students who have chosen to pursue media, biotechnology and music as their fields of study. They teach science, but they also teach creativity, use interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving, and there is a focus on self-education, and social skills. The curriculum includes three languages: native Danish, English, and an optional foreign language. There are no separate classrooms, teachers' lounges, walls, doors, or even a chalkboard! All students are taught in the same large open room, which occupies four levels. The boundaries between classes are tentative, but no one is prevented from learning. Internet access throughout the school is stable and free of charge. The gymnasium building has been voted Scandinavia‘s most outstanding building.
- Children at ALPHA School in Toronto choose what they want to learn today. There is no timetable, no grades, no homework, no compulsory attendance. Classes are not formed according to age, but according to hobbies. The name of the school itself is an acronym for an English expression, translated as: “A lot of people hope for an alternative”. That was the view of the founders 46 years ago. And after almost half a century parents take an active part in school life, especially as there are many reasons for interaction between adults and children: holidays, picnics, excursions, theme days. Strange as it may seem, the lack of discipline and a free-spirited approach do not harm the pupils. Many former ALPHA graduates are very successful, managing to take on several jobs and professions at once.
- Kompong Luong is not just the name of the school, but also the whole village where it is located. The place is unique for the fact that absolutely all the institutions and dwellings are located on the surface of Tonie Sap Lake. Even with a satellite, the exact address of this village is difficult to determine; the boat houses as well as the shop, cafe and even the school are always on the move. The school exists on donations from tourists and locals. Most of the pupils are orphans and both study and live at the school. For them, this opportunity is really a ticket to a brighter future.
- Ten years ago, a school of the future was opened in West Philadelphia. Here, students don‘t need textbooks or notebooks, studying takes place exclusively on computers, and teachers only use interactive whiteboards in every classroom. Students also have their own digital lockers, which can only be opened by reading their identity cards. The school had a number of technical and disciplinary problems when it first opened, but this was soon resolved and it became well known. By teaching standard subjects using the latest digital technology, the school makes it possible for students to find jobs much more effectively and quickly after graduation.
