Предварительный просмотр:

International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion celebrated by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday.

IWD is an official holiday in many countries, including Algeria, China, Cuba, Italy, Poland, Vietnam. All across the world, men give flowers and other gifts to the women in their lives - mothers, wives, girlfriends, sisters, teachers, etc. In Portugal and Romania, women celebrate by having "women-only" dinners. IWD is a big event in India, where people hold celebrations throughout the day. Indian men want to show how important women are to their society.

In today`s Russia International Women`s Day has nothing to do with the feminist movement for protection of women`s political rights. On this day women enjoy being taken care of by their men and children. 8 March is kind of a combination of St. Valentine`s and Mother`s Day. It is a wonderful day of womanhood and love. The most popular presents are flowers, especially mimosas, daffodils and tulips. 8 March is celebrated everywhere: in offices, schools and families. Students and businessmen prepare nice surprises for their classmates and colleagues. Children paint something or do handicrafts as gifts for their mothers and grannies. Men come home with flowers for their wives and candies for their daughters. Being a National Holiday in Russia International Women`s Day is free from work.

All around the world women are becoming more powerful in business, entertainment, politics and other areas. There are over a dozen nations today with women leaders.

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men.

On March 8, 1857, a demonstration on Manhattan's lower east side took place. The women stopped work to protest bad working conditions, a twelve hour day and low pay.

More than 50 years later, on March 8, 1908, working women in New York marched under banners demanding equal pay, child care centres, the right to vote, and the end to hard working conditions. Their slogan- "Bread and Roses" sang through the streets: "Bread", the symbol of economic security, and "Roses", the symbol for a better life.

In 1910 Women's Day was taken up by feminists throughout the country. Later that year delegates went to the second International Conference of Women in Copenhagen.

Inspired by the actions of US women workers and their socialist sisters, Clara Zetkin; had already framed a proposal to put to the conference of women that women throughout the world should focus on a particular day each year to press for their demands. Zetkin's suggestion was greeted by 100 women from 17 countries with unanimous approval and International Women's Day was the result.
