(10 класс)

Тема: Getting to Know the USA

Цели:

      1. Учить учащихся монологическим высказываниям по истории, географии, культуре страны изучаемого языка, традициям, обычаям.

  1. Познакомить с разнообразными сторонами жизни американцев, исрользуя богатый иллюстрированный предметный материал из США.

Оборудование: карты, альбомы, картинки, открытки, диски, аудиозаписи джазовых мелодий США.

 Ход урока

I.Оргмомент.

Teacher: Dear friends! Our lesson is devoted to the USA.. We are going to talk about history, geography, industry, agriculture, holidays, cities, ways of life, hobbies of the American people. I hope you  will learn many interesting things at the lesson.

II.Развитие монологической речи. Основная часть урока.

Р1 : The Discovery, of Аmеriса

The Vikings discovered North America in the 10th century of our era.  America remained unknown to Europe till the end of the 15th century. Сhristоfеr Columbus an experienced sailor, asked the King of Spain to fit him out with a fleet of ships, so that he could took for a new route to India. In 1492 he sailed with 3 small ships into the Atlantic Ocean Columbus was sure that the lands he had discovered were part of India. It wаs undегstооd that Columbus had discovered a new part of the world. It was called America after Ameгigo Vespucci, a traveller who ‚left a description of someplасеs. Тhe countries of America were European colonies for many years. The Spanish conquerors гоbbed and killed the nаtives without mercy.

The pilgrims sailed to America from Phуnouth, England in September, 1620. They came to America for religious freedom. They were among the first European settlers in America The name of the ship was the 'Mayflower". They landed at Рlymouth Rock (the State of Massachusetts) in December 1620. There were people living in America before the pilgrims arrived: The Nativе American Indians. They hunted, fished and farmed to survive. Evеry tribe had its own customs and beliefs. In 1621 the pilgrims had a great harvest. They celebrated it with a Thanksgiving feаst: turkey, corn, beans and pumpkins. The 4th Thursday of November is Thanksgiving Day in the USA.

P3 : The founding of the Аmercan Slate.

Great Britain had 13 American colonies after the pilgrims had come to the American continent. In the War of Independence 1775  American Volunteers won their first battle against the Вгitish forces. The 2nd Continental Cоngгess aррointed George Washington as commander-in-chief of the whole colonial army. On July 4th 1776 the Congress in Philadelphia adopted the Declaration of Independence drafted by Thоmas Jefferson who was latter the 3rd  President of the USA. The Bell of Liberty called the Americans to know about the birth of a new free state. The 4th of July is a big nationаl holiday in the USA. The horizontal red and white stripes on the Ameгican flag represent the оriginal 13 states. The stars on the flag -white on the dark bluе field represent the number of states making up the LISA today.

Р4: Geography.

The USA is bordered by Canada in the North and Mexico in the South. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the Еаst and by the Pacific Ocean in the West. Hawaii, the 50th State, is situated in the Pacific Ocean. Alaska  is separated from Russia by only 50 miles across the Berling Strait. Major highlands are the Appalachian Mountains in the East and the rocky Mountains in the West. The central lowland makes up the basin of the Mississippi River with its tributaries the Missouri and Ohio Rivers. There are also large rivers which flow into the Pacific Осеаг - the Colorado and Columbia.

The Northern part of the USA has а region of the 5 Great lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lаkе Оntario, connected by natural channels cut by rapids. The greatest of them is the Niagara Falls.

Р5 : Climate, Industry and Agriculture.

Crossed by mountain ranges from  north to south country is  unprotected from cold winds from the north and from warm winds from the south. On the wholе, the USA has а continental climate. The country is rich in coal, oil, iron and other minerals. The US economy is highly developed. Mining, metallurgy, еlесtronics and space engineering, chemicals, textiles, leather and footwear are well developed. As regards agriculture both animal husbandry and arable farming are prominent in the economy of the USA.

P6 : States:

California

  1. More kinds of minerals are mined in California than in any other state.
  2. The 37th President of the U.S. Richard М. Nixon was born in California.
  3.  Many movies and TV shows come from California.
  4.  Death Valley is the lowest place in the United States. It is 85 meters below sea-level.
  5.  California grows more food than any other state.
  6.   One of the world's largest zoos is in California.
  7.  The world's largest oceanarium is in California.
  8.  A very large number of tourists come to California each year.
  9.   California is second is fishing.
  10.  California is third in petroleum.
  1. It has the largest tungsten deposits in the United States.
  2. California is first in airplanes and wine, second in lumber, and a leader in automobiles.
  3.  Thе state song of California is « I Lave You, California",
  4.   California has more motor vehicles than any other state.
  5.   California earns more money from raising food and catching fish than any other state.
  6.  California is a leader in electric energy.
  7.  The San Francisco-Oakland and Golden Gate bridges are among the world's engineering marvels.
  8.  California has a great many institutions of higher learning.


Alaska

      1 Anchorage is the largest city in  Alaska.

  1. The chief economic reliance of the people is upon fish, notably the Alaska salmon.
  2. In 1867 Alaska was bought by the United States for seven million two hundred thousand dollars.
  3. Arctic Alaska has been the home of Eskimos for countless centuries.
  4.  Alaska was never completely cut off, though еven today it is hard to get there.
  5.  After fishing, Alaska's chief industry is lumber and the production of wood pulp.
  6.  The growing season in Alaska is short, but the sun shines twenty hours a day in summer. Things grow fast and big. A cabbage can weigh about thirty kilograms.
  7.  Alaska is the biggest state, but it has the fewest people.
  8. The population of Alaska is around 450,000.


Texas

      1 The greatest of the ports and the largest of Texas cities is Houston.

  1. The city of Austin has the biggest state capitol building in the United states.
  2. The word Texas comes from the Indian word meaning “friends”.
  3. Тhe nickname of Texas is Lone Star State.
  1. Texas is a leader in oil, natural gas, cotton, cattle, sheep, wool, onions, and turkeys.
  2. Texas was admitted into the United States on December 29th 1845.
  3. More land is farmed in Texas than in any other state.
  4. Texas is first in beef cattle, cotton, sheep, wool, and mohair.
  5.  Texas is first in petroleum and natural gas, and second in salt.
  6. Texas is the only state that was an independent republic, recognized by the United States, before annexation.
  7. The largest state fair in the United States is held annually in Dallas for 16 days early in October.
  8. The largest rose-growing center in the world is near Tyler.
  9. The University of Texas is at Austin.


Rhode Island

  1. Rhode Island has more people to the square mile than any state except New Jersey.
  2. Rhode Island has many old homes, churches, and other buildings, some of which are over 300 years old.
  3.  The nickname of Rhode Island is Little Rhody.
  4. The origin of the name Rhode Island comes from the Greek island of Rhodes.
  5.  The largest cities of Rhode Island are Providence, Warwick, Pawtucket, Cranston and East Providence.
  6. Rhode Island is not an island at all. It is made up of 36 islands and a mainland.
  7.  The leading industry is jewelry and silverware.
  8. 8. Rhode Island produces granite, limestone and graphite.

P7 : Large Cities

 NEW YORK

New York is the financial and business center of the United States of America. New York is a large seaport. Much of the U.S import and export comes through New York. Heгe you can find small tugboats and modern ocean liners. When an American speaks of New York, he means Manhattan. Manhattan is an island. It is surrounded by the East River and the Hudson River. These two rivers are crossed by fifty bridges.

Manhattan is the heart of New York City. The streets of New York are crowded with cars and people all day long. About eight million people live in New York. One of the many skyscrapers is situated on the East River. It belongs to the United Nations. The skyscraper has thirty-nine stories and fifty-four hundred windows. Broadway is the best-known of New York streets. It is also the longest street in the world. Broadway crosses Manhattan from one end to the other. In the center of Broadway is Times Square. If you look at Times Square at night, you will understand why the Americans call it the Great White Way.

PHILADELPHIA

During the Revolution Philadelphia was the capital of the new republic (1790-1800) as well as the state capital (to 1799). A nucleus of American culture in colonial times, it it still the seat of many philosophical., artistic, dramatic, musical, and scientific societies. Musical activities flourish in the city, which has an outstanding symphony orchestra. During the summer popular programs arc presented in the outdoor setting of Robin Hood Dell, a natural amphitheater in Fairmount Park. This, the largest of the city's parks, and one of the largest in the world, has numerous historic monuments and shrines. Here are the art museum, the central branch of the public library, the Rodin Museum, the aquarium, and the zoological and botanical gardens. Among Philadelphia's numerous educational institutions are the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Drexel Institute of Technology, etc. Important historic shrines of Philadelphia include Independence Hall, where the Declaration was signed and the Liberty Bell is kept, the Betsy Ross House, where, according to one story, the first American flag was made. Under the leadership of Leopold Stokowski (1912-1936) the Philadelphia Orchestra made tremendous progress and won widespread fame. The Philadelphia Museum of Art owns many fine collections.

Washington

  1. Washington is the residence of the President and Congress of the United states.
  2. Washington is a large scientific and cultural center where many research institutes are concentrated.
  3. There are five universities in Washington, D.C.
  4. The Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln memorials are among the city sights.
  5. The main business street of the city is Pennsylvania Avenue.
  6. The Arlington Memorial Bridge across the Potomac connects the city with Arlington National Cemetery.
  7. Washington can be reached by small sea-going ships.
  8. There is no heavy industry in the city of Washington.
  9. Foreign tourists are surprised not to find a single skyscraper the capital of the U.S.A.
  10. The District of Columbia is named in honor of Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of America.
  11.  The Washington Monument looks like a very big pencil. It rises 160 meters and is hollow inside. A special lift brings visitors to the top in 70 seconds from where they can enjoy a view of the city.
  12.  Most of the people in Washington work at government offices.
  13.  The monument to George Washington is one of the tallest stone monuments in the world.
  14.   From the top of the monument to George Washington you can see the entire District of Columbia and even the neighboring State of Virginia.
  15.  The Capitol is where the Congress of tie United States meets.
  16.  The Capitol stands on Capitol Hill, the highest point in the city.
  17. The Capitol Dome is so large that you can see it everywhere in Washington.
  18. Washington was planned with the Capitol as the centerpiece.
  19. The city is divided into four main areas: Northwest,Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast.
  20.  Streets in the different areas may have the same name  but are distinguished by the area designation.
  21. Streets running north and south are designate by number - as First,Second, etc.
  22.  Those running east and west, generally, are designated by letters of the alphabet.
  23.  Washington, like most large cities, has a traffic problem.
  24.  Parking space, particularly in the downtown areas, often is hard to find.
  25.  Many of the historical and other attractions are located in the downtown area and are easily accessible.
  26.  Government buildings, art galleries and theaters are located in the downtown area.
  27.   Just to the south of the White House is the Washington Monument.
  28. The name "White House" became official when President Theodore Roosevelt had it engraved upon his stationery.
  29. The grounds surrounding the White Home are attractive with broad lawns, fountains, trees, and gardens. They were planned by Andrew Jackson Downing, an American rural architect and landscape gardener.
  30. The President holds his news conferences in the East Room of the White House.
  31. The President and his family live upstairs in the White House.
  32.  The White House belongs to the American people and not to the President.
  33.   The White House is open to the public; anybody can go inside and look around.
  34.   The first room on the White House tour is the White House library.
  35.  In 1942 an air-paid shelter was added co the White House so that the President and his family could hide in case of a possible air raid.
  36.  The White House was designed by James Hoban on a site chosen by George Washington, the first President of the the U.S.



New York

  1. New Amsterdam was captured by the British without firing a shot.
  2. When the war with Holland was over, the British did not give the colony back.
  3. The city's development became rapid in the 19th century.
  4. "New York is not America" is a favorite phrase among Americans.
  5.  The most densely populated section of Manhattan is Harlem.
  6.  The houses in Harlem are worse condition than anywhere else.
  7.  Wall Street is the financial district of New York.
  8.  When the Empire State Building was completed in 1931, every New Yorker pointed to it with pride.
  9.  The spirit of New York may be described as speed.
  10.  The whole world knows the famous American phrase "Time is money".
  11.  The great skyscrapers are complete cities in themselves.
  12.  Most of the skyscrapers contain restaurants, barber shops banks and post offices.


Philadelphia

  1. Independence Hall in Philadelphia could be called the birthplace of the United States. The Declaration of Independence was signed there.
  2.  Philadelphia was the capital of the colonies during most of War of Independence. Later it was the capital of the young U.S. from 1790 to 1800.
  3.  By the time the colonies went to war with England, Philadelphia was the biggest city in America. Today it is the fourth biggest city it the United States.




P8: The Political System

The USA is a federal republic. The president is elected for 4 years and is the head of state and of government. He names the Cabinet. Congress consists of two houses: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Senate consists of two senators from each state, elected for 6 years. The president of the Senate is the ice-President of the United States. The two main political parties are the Republicans and the Democrats.

  1. There are only two major political parties in the United States, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party.
  2.   The Republican Party won its first major victory with the election of Abraham Lincoln as President in 1860.
  3.  The Republican Party votes come generally from higher income groups, while the lower income groups generally vote Democrat.
  4.  The symbol of the Democratic Party is the donkey, that of the Republican Party is the elephant.
  5.  Many American voters do not bother to vote.
  6. Eight U.S president were born in Virginia: George Washington (1732), Thomas Jefferson (1743), James Madison (1751), James Monroe (1758), William Henry Harrison (1773), John Tyler (1790), Zachary Taylor (1784), and Woodrow Wilson (1856).
