Орг. момент.

Teacher: Good morning! I am glad to see you again. How did you spend this evening? As for me, I spent some time watching a film. It is called “The Night Watch”. Have you seen the film? What do you think of it?

Pupil 1: Yes, I have seen the film and I am sure it is a real hit. I think a lot of people watched it.

Pupil 2: In my opinion the film is a bit boring and the plot is a real mess and it has very little in a common with the book which it based on.

Pupil 3: Oh, come off it. The film is great, it was nominated for an Oskar, but unfortunately it was not awarded one.

Teacher: Well, I see, you have different tastes in watching films. And we will try to find out what are they. We will speak about the role of cinema our life, discuss our favourite genres, actors and films.

Основная часть.

Teacher: To begin with, let’s look at the screen. You were asked to do some kind of a research work and find out if cinema is popular with young people of your age. (Презентация. Слайд 2)

Pupil 1: We did such work and found that every second person is fond of going to the cinema.

Pupil 2: Unfortunately, we have not cinema in our village, and that’s why we go to the cinema not often.

Pupil 3: I found that favourite films of my classmates are: “Titanic”, “Avatar”, “The Aviator”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Celebrity”.

Pupil 4: And our favourite actors are: Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Leonardo Wilhelm Di Caprio.

Teacher: I see you are fond of going to the cinema. It is a pity that we have no opportunity to do it every weekend. There is no doubt that a good cinema show is an excellent entertainment. But do you know who made the first film?

Pupil 1: The inventors of the cinema were the French. The Lumiere brothers invented the first film projector and motion camera in 1895.That year on the 28th of December they demonstrated the first three minutes film «Arrival of the Train».

Teacher: What was it about?

Pupil 2: In that film, a train came towards the camera. People ran out of the cinema, thinking it was a real train. (Презентация. Слайд 3)

Teacher: The development of cinematography brought to life the world cinema empire called Hollywood. This name always attracts a lot of attentions and arouses many questions. I think your project “Hollywood” will help us to answer these questions.

Pupil1: The world capital of filmed entertainment Los Angeles has been a lot of things over the past 100 years. First, it was a little city with orange forest and great weather. But, one day in 1908 a group of people from Chicago came to Los Angeles to shoot a film. Since that day a lot of directors, producers, actors and thousands of other workers have been coming to Los Angeles.   In 1911   the first studio appeared in Hollywood.

In the 1920s Hollywood made 80% of the world's films. Silent and black-and-white films of those early years starring Mary Pickford* and Charlie Chaplin* were forced out by sound films in the middle of the 1920s. Full-length films came up to take place of short films. And the first colour film, Gone With the Wind, was shot in 1939. This film brought a great success to Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable who starred in the film.

The number of the studios grew very quickly. They combined in large corporations and now the biggest film companies are MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros, and Universal. (Презентация. Слайды 4-14)

Teacher: Film making industry developed rapidly and the number of genres of films grew constantly. What genres do you know? What is associated with these genres? Fill in Word Web. (Презентация. Слайд 21)

Teacher: And now I want you to open your Activity Book on p. 85. Here are some posters of old films. Can you restore them? (Презентация. Слайд 22)

Teacher: Every person has a preference for this or that type of films. Listen to the tape and answer the question: “What types of films do these people talk about?”

Pupil 1: They speak about action film.

Pupil 2: They discuss the thriller.

Pupil 3: The love story is talking about.

Физминутка. Now it is time to relax. Let’s relax and listen to an amusing music.

Teacher: Having watched a film we often discuss it with our friends. Some of you have seen the film “Avatar”, but others not and want to know if the film is worth going and watching. Before you present the next project, ask some questions about this film. The model at the screen will help you to make up a dialogue. (Презентация. Слайд 23) So it was the introduction into the project about favourite film.

Pupil 1: I want to present a project about my favourite film “Avatar”.

«Avatar» was based on thousand of images and pictures that Cameron represented, sketched in high school and college. In the seventies, his mother once told that had a dream about three-meter blue woman, and he drew it, and then long nurtured this image. Later he used these developments, when invented for «Avatar» race Na’vy their planet.

The name of the movie «Avatar» is a term in Hindu philosophy.  Although the Russian word «avatar» is usually translated as «the embodiment», it can be translated as «phenomenon». From January to April 2006, Cameron worked on the screenplay. The story unfolds on the planet-moon Pandora populated by fantastical creatures. Working with a linguist and director of the Center for Management Communication University of Southern California, Paul Frommer, he developed s language and culture for Na’vi, root race Pandora. Na’vi – an artificial language, developed by a professional linguist, Paul Frommer. According to the script, native speakers Na’vis blue – skinned three-meter humanoid planet Pandora, the atmosphere is poisonous to humans. For Shooting tape system was used Fusion 3D, which was developed by Cameron with his Friend Vince Pace even while working on «Ghosts of the Abyss». It is something different.

Avatars - are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA and the natives of Pandora - Na'vis. Avatar can be remotely controlled mentally, and only by an operator, who created him. The main motive of Jake – to earn enough money for operation. Finally Jake remains with the natives. His body haves been transferred to his avatar using biological energy of the tree. This tree with its root system and flying the dispute brings the forest into a single ecosystem and maintains the balance of the living world of Pandora.(Презентация. Видеоролик.)

Teacher: It is not a secret that we live in a very difficult time now. And people need something amusing and pleasant. Cinema helps us to relax and to rest. But sometimes we go there to see our favourite actors and enjoy their plays. Tell about your favourite actor and prove that he is really the best. (Презентация. Слайд)

Pupil 1: Our project is about stunning and talented actor Leo DiCaprio.  (Презентация. Слайды 24-31)

Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio, born November 11, 1974 is an American actor and film producer. He has received many awards, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Aviator (2004). In addition, he has won a Silver Bear, and a Satellite Award among others, and has been nominated by the Screen Actors Guild and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, DiCaprio started his career by appearing in TV series such as the soap opera Santa Barbara and the sitcom Growing Pains in the early 1990s. He made his film debut in the comedic sci-fi horror film Critters 3 (1991) and received first notable critical praise for his performance in This Boy's Life (1993). Di Caprio achieved recognition for his subsequent work in supporting roles in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Marvin's Room (1995), and The Basketball Diaries (1996), before landing a leading role in Romeo + Juliet (1996), and came to international fame with his role in James Cameron's Titanic (1997), the highest-grossing film of all time for more than 12 years until 2010.

Pupil 2: In 1997 Di Caprio starred in James Cameron's Titanic . Cast as twenty-year-old Jack Dawson, a penniless Wisconsin man, who wins two tickets for the third-class on the fated RMS Titanic, Di Caprio initially refused to portray the character but was eventually encouraged to pursue the role by Cameron who strongly believed in his acting ability. Against expectations, the film went on to become the highest-grossing film of all tim , grossing more than US$1.843 billion in box-office receipts worldwide, and transformed Di Caprio into a commercial movie superstar, resulting in fan worship among teenage girls and young women in general that became known as "Leo-Mania.” He was nominated for most of the high-profile awards, including a second Golden Globe nomination. Upon the success of the Titanic, Di Caprio stated in 2000: "I have no connection with me during that whole Titanic phenomenon and what my face became around the world [...] I'll never reach that state of popularity again, and I don't expect to. It's not something I'm going to try to achieve either."

  1. Teacher: We have found what are your favourite actors and types of films. It was not so difficult. But is it difficult to be a film critic? A lot of people think that it is very easy. You simply watch a film or a play and say why you like it or not. Do you want to be a critic? Let’s try to do it. You have seen the film “Beauty and the Beast”. The film review is in front of you. Read it and match paragraphs A-D with the following headings in order to clarify its structure.

                Beauty and the Beast (1946)

                               A Film Review

  1. “Beauty and the Beast” was directed by Jean Cocteau. It is based on the fairy tale by Madame Le Prince de Beaumont and it stars Jean Marais as the Beast and Josette Day as Beauty.
  2. Beauty is one of three daughters of a French merchant. One day Beauty`s father gets lost in the forest, but finds a strange castle. The owner of the castle is a repulsive monster, who threatens the merchant – either one of his daughters replaces him as a prisoner in the castle or the father will die. Beauty offers to replace her father and goes to live in the castle. In the end                                                                 she discovers the Beast as a handsome prince.
  3. The film deals with the theme of appearances in very interesting ways and clever ways. In one scene Beauty looks in the mirror and her face is transforms into the Beast s. Moreover, the whispering furniture is as frightening as anything in modern films… The film does, however,              have its weak points. The Beast s voice is rather squeaky, and the lovers flying at the end is a bit corny!  Although it is in black and white, the striking use of light makes it seem at times like a moving painting. The music is also magnificent.
  4.   “Beauty and the Beast” is a fairy tale with a message - you should not judge a book by its cover. Of course, it has neither the cute characters nor the Hollywood songs of the Disney version; it speaks to people of all ages. I recommend it for all the family.

  1. Read the film review and match paragraphs A-D with the following headings in order to clarify its structure.
  • Good and bad points
  • Basic information about the film
  • Conclusion and recommendation
  • Brief summary of the plot

Teacher: If you have done this task, you can work with the film map, using the model on the screen. (Презентация. Слайд 33)

Заключительная часть

Teacher: Well, our lesson is over. You were very active today and get good and excellent marks. Your homework is to make up a film review of your favourite film. You can use the film map. Thank you for a lesson. Good buy.
