Traditions.

Every country and every nation has its own traditions and customs.  You cannot speak about the country without speaking about its traditions and customs. Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up.

Christmas is a religions holiday. It is celebrated on December 25 as the birthday of Christ. On Xmas Eve English houses  are decorated  with holly and branches of mistle toe.  Many families have Xmas trees which are decorated with glass balls, candles, colourful electric lights and chocolate animals. «Merry Christmas» you may hear everywhere. Traditionally it is a family holiday. The holiday dinner consists of roast turkey, plum pudding and pies.

Christmas is a holiday which everyone waits for. It is a custom for relatives and close friends to give presents at Christmas time. Christmas Eve Little children believe that when they are a sleep Santa Claus comes to visit them. The next morning they find presents in the Christmas stockings.

December 26 is called Boxing Day. The word ‘‘boxing’’ has nothing to do with the sport but comes from an old custom of giving peer people Christmas boxes. On Boxing Day the English people rise later than usual. This is the day when they visit their friends; go for a walk, or for a drive. Or just have a rest. In the afternoon there are foot ball matches and greyhound races for the men pantomimes, for children. In the evening there are parties and public dances.
