                                                         Tea – leaves.

Many years ago people didn’t know about tea in European countries. Many people didn’t  even know the word “tea”, though drinking was very popular in the East.

Once a young sailor came back from India. He returned from a far-away country & brought his mother a gift. He brought her a box of tea. The old woman didn’t know anything about tea, but she liked the smell, & invited all her friends to come & try it. When her guests arrived, she invited them to the dining table. The old woman gave them  cakes & fruit & tea-leaves.

When the sailor entered the room & saw a big plate with the tea-leaves, he understood everything. He smiled when he saw his mother’s friends. They were eating tea-leaves with butter & salt. They pretended they liked it, but it was clear they didn’t enjoy eating the leaves.

“Where is the tea, Mother?” the sailor asked. His mother pointed to the plate in the middle of the table. “No, this is only the leaves of the tea,” the sailor said. “Where is the water?”

“The water?” his mother said. “I didn’t know what to do & threw the water away, of course.”

                                                           Famous  Diaries

What would you do if you see a friend’s diary on the table? The wish to have a look is great, but diaries are private & only the author can read them.

A diary is a personal record of experiences & feelings. It can include (включать) anything - from what you ate for breakfast to your thoughts  on a favourite new film. The brilliant thing about diaries is that there are no rules – anything goes! People have been keeping diaries for thousands of years. Some of them can give an impression of what life was like in other times.

Samuel Pepys wrote one of the most famous historical diaries. He wrote the diaries in 1660-1669. They give us information on such events as the Great Plague (чума) of  1665 & the Great Fire of London in 1666.

But, even if Pepys’ friends could have an opportunity to look into his diaries they couldn’t read them. The diaries were written in a code that wasn’t cracked (не был разгадан) for over 100 years!

Have you ever heard about the Diary of Anne Frank? The Diary of Anne Frank is the most famous diary of modern times. Anne Frank was a Jew (еврейка), living in Holland, who hid from the Nazis during World War II (2-ая мировая война). She couldn’t meet anyone from 1942 to 1944, that’s why Anne’s diary became her close friend. On the first page she wrote: “I hope you will be a source of great comfort & support”

She called her diary Kitty & it has been translated into 55 languages & has sold  more than 25 million copies around the world.

I.Read the text & answer the following questions choosing the right variant:

I went to the cinema last week & laughed all the way through the new film “Waiter!” which is set in a restaurant. The American actor Tom Waiter plays the worst cook the world has ever seen & he employs one of the worst waiters, played by Joe Vermont.

The London restaurant where the filming took place does actually exist.

Jane Connors, the owner, runs a successful business &, although she thinks “Waiter!” is a good film, she is very annoyed with the director. When she agreed to the filming, she wasn’t told that the film is about a restaurant where everything goes wrong & the food is disgusting. Although the film might make Jane’s restaurant famous if it is a success, she is afraid that people will stop coming because they will think that the food & service is terrible – like it is in the film. Jane is worried she will lose business & may even have to close & start again with a new restaurant.

Having seen the film, I agree she has a problem. The film company paid her a very small fee & she has since asked for more. The best solution though is for her to contact the newspapers. I am sure they will be interested in her story & it will actually help her business in the end.
