I.  Организационный момент.

T.: “Good morning  boys and girls! This year’s week of Foreign Languages at our school is devoted to the world literature  and today at our lesson we are going to speak about the English literature. You’ll read, do some tasks, share your opinions on the theme.

Well, from my point of view reading is one of the most  important  things in our life. It makes our life more interesting, develops our imagination, it helps us to learn more not only about literature, but also about the  culture, history of our country as well as foreign countries. Let me paraphrase a well- known saying  “ So many countries, so many writers.” And I hope you ‘ve read a lot of books  written by authors from all over the world. That’s why firstly, I’d like you to do a literary quiz.   Take, please, a blue card and do task №1.  So, match the titles of the books to the authors. “ ( Sup.1)

II.

T.: “Well, not bad. My hopes have come true.  Now I want you to remember the name of the author whose book we’ve just finished reading.  Yes, it’s Charles Dickens. You’ve read his book , but do you know much about the writer himself?   I’m not sure and that’s why I want to offer you the following task. You’ll read the text about Charles Dickens and while reading you ‘ll mark the text with special signs such as “a tick V” for information you know, “+” – for information you have learned from the text, and”?” – for what you’d like to know, then you’ll  have to fill in a table.” ( Sup.2)

P1P2:”  I know that Ch. Dickens is a famous English writer./ …he wrote “ Oliver Twist”…etc.” /                                I’ve learned from the text that Ch. Dickens got married to Catherine Hogarth. etc. /  I’d like to know more about his children/ his books …”

A) T.:” Now let’ s pass to the book itself. So, “ David Copperfield”. I’d like you to show how attentively you read the book & how well you know its characters. Take, please, the pink card and do the following task. “ ( Sup.3)

B) T.:  “Ch. Dickens said that “David Copperfield” was his favourite book. Why do you think he said these words?

P1 P2:  “ The book is partly autobiographical”; “Like David Copperfield, Charles Dickens  began working when he was a little boy/ he had a very hard life”; “ In the image of Mr Micawber,  who was always in debt, he showed his father;” etc.

C) T.:”Ch. Dickens created a lot of characters & one of the most important character of his books is, to my mind, the society of the Victorian England. What do you know of it & people living at that time?

D) T.: “So, the main character of the book is David Copperfield. Let’s remember what you learned about him. Kirill wants to share with you his opinion about David. Listen, please attentively to him and then you can add your ideas.”

E) T.:” One of the main themes of the book is love story. There are several couples in the book and Dickens wrote about their relations very carefully and very vividly. Now Grisha and Olya  are going to show you a scene from the book.”

T.: “ It’s time to speak about other characters of the book. There are David’s friends and enemies, women and men. At our last lesson I asked  you to choose any characters and compare them. Please, you are welcome.”

III. Conclusion.

T.: “ Well, I hope thanks to “David Copperfield” you’ll read other Dickens’ works and not only his. I greatly hope that reading will become necessary and very pleasant part of your life. Thank you for the lesson. I enjoyed it  greatly and I expect you too.”

                                                              Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens is one of the greatest novelist in the English literature. In his books he showed a real world and people of Victorian England.

Charles Dickens was born in Landport, Portsmouth in Hampshire in 1812. His father was                                       a clerk and had eight children. The  family was moderately wealthy, but his father always spent more money than he received. When Charles was 11 years old his family was put into prison for his father’s debts. Charles had to give up the school and work. He worked at the blacking factory ten hours a day and earned ten shillings which helped him to pay for his room and support his family. Charles hated it and never forgot the experience. He used it in many novels, especially in “David Copperfield” and “Oliver Twist”.

At the age of 15 he was lucky to get a job in a London lawyer’s office though he didn’t like this job. When he was 16 he started to work for a newspaper. And by the age of 25 he became one of the best journalist in London.

“The Pickwick Papers” was his first great work which made him popular.

On 2 April 1836, he married Catherine Thompson Hogarth. They set up home in Bloomsberry, where they had ten children. Dickens worked a lot. His books became very popular in many countries and he spent much time abroad. In the last years of his life he began to meet with his readers and to give public readings from his books. These meetings were very successful.

He never stopped writing and travelling and he died very suddenly in 1870.

Charles Dickens was buried in the Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey. The inscription on his tomb reads: “ He was a sympathizer to the poor, the suffering and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”
