Introduction

Science and culture are two powerful wings of progress of the youth of the country. The might of the country lies in the unity of its people.

Special attention is being paid to studying the native culture.

The primary task of today is to accelerate the cultural development of the youth. In school and out of school children's establishments conditions are created for the development of creative activities, for their aesthetic education. Pupils and students learn to sing and dance, play musical instruments.

Circles of amateur art activities, festivals, holidays of songs and music, days of Poetry, Literary meetings, exhibitions of children's drawing and painting, school amateur theatres, creative associations of young literature lovers testify the growth of performers, their skill and actively contribute to the development of aesthetic inclinations.

In their leisure time they go in for sports, read, go to the libraries, parks, cinemas, theatres, concert halls.

Why do people dance? Pupils and students like dance, doesn’t they? What kind of dance do they prefer?

To find the answers to these questions it was necessary to do this research.

The aim of my project:

In my work I would like to find out, how does the development of the art of dance in the development of the culture of humanity as whole and individual countries, to trace the dependence of dances from each other. Also I would like to find out how the dance impacts on human life, his emotional state and psychological peculiarities.

Tasks:

  • to collect the necessary material about the history of dance;
  •  to observe students’ opinions about dancing;
  • to conclude and work out some recommendations for an effective way of dancing for students

Problem for research

Young people's recent growing cultural standards make themselves felt primarily in the choice of cultural values. Of course, they like to be entertained (by watching TV shows, reading detective stories, etc.). But they certainly know how to find their way amid the great variety of cultural values, and they know how to tell genuine art from imitation.

  1. Dance is…

Dance is a type of art that generally involves movement of the body, often rhythmic and to music. It is performed in many cultures as a form ofemotional expression, social interaction, or exercise, in a spiritual or performance setting, and is sometimes used to express ideas or tell a story. Dance may also be regarded as a form of nonverbal communication between humans or other animals, as in bee dances and behaviour patterns such as a mating dances.

Definitions of what constitutes dance can depend on social and cultural norms and aesthetic, artistic and moral sensibilities. Definitions may range from functional movement (such as folk dance) to virtuoso techniques such as ballet. Martial arts kata are often compared to dances, and sports such as gymnastics, figure skating and synchronized swimming are generally thought to incorporate dance. In some cases, the motion of ordinarily inanimate objects may be described as dance (the leaves danced in the wind).

There are many styles and genres of dance. African dance is interpretative. Ballet, ballroom and tango are classical dance styles. Square danceand electric slide are forms of step dance, and breakdancing is a type of street dance. Dance can be participatory, social, or performed for an audience. It can also be ceremonial, competitive or erotic. Dance movements may be without significance in themselves, as in ballet or European folk dance, or have a gestural vocabulary or symbolic meaning as in some Asian dances.

Dance categories by number of interacting dancers are mainly solo dance, partner dance and group dance. Dance is performed for various purposes like ceremonial dance, erotic dance, performance dance, social dance etc.

  1. History of dance

Dance does not leave behind clearly identifiable physical artifacts such as stone tools, hunting implements or cave paintings. It is not possible to say when dance became part of human culture.

Dance has certainly been an important part of ceremony, rituals, celebrations and entertainment since before the birth of the earliest human civilizations. Archeology delivers traces of dance from prehistoric times such as the 9,000 year old Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka paintings in India and Egyptian tomb paintings depicting dancing figures from c. 3300 BC.

One of the earliest structured uses of dances may have been in the performance and in the telling of myths. It was also sometimes used to show feelings for one of the opposite gender. It is also linked to the origin of "love making." Before the production of written languages, dance was one of the methods of passing these stories down from generation to generation.

Another early use of dance may have been as a precursor to ecstatic trance states in healing rituals. Dance is still used for this purpose by many cultures from the Brazilian rainforest to the Kalahari Desert.

Sri Lankan dances goes back to the mythological times of aboriginal yingyang twins and "yakkas" (devils). According to a Sinhalese legend, Kandyan dances originated 250 years ago, from a magic ritual that broke the spell on a bewitched king. Many contemporary dance forms can be traced back to historical, traditional, ceremonial, and ethnic dance.

  1. Dancing and music

Many early forms of music and dance were created and performed together. This paired development has continued through the ages with dance/music forms such as: jig, waltz, tango, disco, salsa, electronica and hip-hop. Some musical genres have a parallel dance form such as baroque music and baroque dance; others, such as classical music and classical ballet, developed separately.

Although dance is often accompanied by music, it can also be presented independently or provide its own accompaniment (tap dance). Dance presented with music may or may not be performed in time to the music depending on the style of dance. Dance performed without music is said to be danced to its own rhythm.

Ballroom dancing is a dance art form which combines athletic fitness with artistically skillful dance steps.

  1. 20th-century concert dance

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was an explosion of innovation in dance style characterized by an exploration of freer technique. Early pioneers of what became known as modern dance includeLoie Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Mary Wigman and Ruth St. Denis. The relationship of music to dance serves as the basis for Eurhythmics, devised by Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, which was influential to the development of Modern dance and modern ballet through artists such as Marie Rambert.Eurythmy, developed by Rudolf Steiner and Marie Steiner-von Sivers, combines formal elements reminiscent of traditional dance with the new freer style, and introduced a complex new vocabulary to dance. In the 1920s, important founders of the new style such as Martha Graham andDoris Humphrey began their work. Since this time, a wide variety of dance styles have been developed; see Modern dance.

4.1. The influence of African American dance

African American dances are those dances which have developed within African American communities in everyday spaces, rather than in dance studios, schools or companies and its derivatives, tap dance, disco, jazz dance, swing dance, hip hop dance and breakdance. Other dances, such as the lindy hop with its relationship to rock and roll music and rock and roll dance have also had a global influence.

  1. Hobby

Hobby is a favourite occupation which people like to do when they have some free time. We choose a hobby according to our character and taste. Very often our hobby helps us to choose our future profession because we learn a lot of new things.

Many people are interested in music. Others like reading or going on hikes, taking photographs or knitting. People living in cities and towns like to be closer to nature. They get away from the tiresome and dusty cities to enjoy the countryside. For example, gardening and growing flowers is the most common hobby among Englishmen.

All the members of our family have their own hobbies. My mother enjoys painting, and my father is fond of hunting. My sister’s favourite occupation is reading.

For me life is a dance. I cannot imagine myself without it. Every movement, swing, turn, makes the world brighter.

I have been dancing since I was 5. And it is passion of my life. At first, I danced ballroom dancers. It is very beautiful and elegant. Dress, heels, hair - what could be more beautiful? Before going on a stage, you feel excitement. But once the music starts to play, once there is a great desire to come out and shows to all that you are capable. And exit. Crowds of people are watching your every movement, a smile. And it is a true happiness.

Now I dance hip-hop. Hip-hop is a youth subculture that originated in the mid-1970 among African Americans and Hispanics. It is characterized by its own music (also known as hip-hop, rap), its slang, its own hip-hop fashion, dance styles. By the beginning of 1990, the hip-hop has become part of youth culture in many countries. I am trying myself to think what movements use, speaking in the language of dance. And what is with this comes out. We travelled with our band at the international festival Oskoldans, which left a lot of impressions, memories. When we arrived home, we long bored about the atmosphere...

  1.  Reseach (A practical part of the project)

A survey was hold among the senior pupils of 6-7 forms in my school № 34 about their spending free time. There were the following questions in the survey

( Appendix 1)        :

  1. What is your hobby?
  2. How do you spend your free time?
  3. Do you go info sport?
  4. Do you like dancing?
  5. What would you like to change in your activities?

During the survey we found out that:

  • The first question “What is your hobby?” had the following results: 31% of pupils go info sports, 23% - music and art  and 40%-dancing,6%-others.
  • The second question “How do you spend your free time?” showed that 36% of pupils watching TV, 27% walk with friends, 14%- communicate on the Internet, 21%-art and sport.
  • The third question “Do you go info sport?” showed that 66% of pupils prefer sport
  • “Do you like dancing?” showed that 58% of pupils prefer dancing.
  • The fifth question “What would you like to change in your activities?” had the following results: 24% of pupils would like to have more free time, 23% - to travel, 17%- to set on the Internet, 36%- to go info sport.

Conclusion

How do young people spend their spare time? What leisure activities do they prefer? These and other questions were asked in a sociological survey. Art is popular with many people because it reflects beauty or reality.

The primary task of today is to accelerate the cultural development of the youth. In school and out of school children's establishments conditions are created for the development of creative activities, for their aesthetic education. Pupils and students learn to sing and dance, play musical instruments.

Dance is my choose. Dance is my pulse, my heartbeat, my breathing. It's the rhythm of my life. It's the expression in time and movement, in happiness, joy, sadness and envy.

This material will let pupils, their parents and teachers get to know the history of dance, understand the pupils’ interests in art, make necessary conclusions and work out useful methods of spending free time.
