Exercise 1

What do you think the movie ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is about? Say in a few words.

Exercise 2

Read and remember the following phrases:

to come down in a chaise, compassion, the highest respect, be tiresome, constant companions, to give hearty consent, judge of beauty, poppycock, painted peacocks, disagreeable expression, to fill someone with guilt, astonishingly, regiment, to have the honor, to detest, agreeable, tolerable, to tempt, stout love, to flatter.

II Упражнения после просмотра эпизода

Exercise 1

Read the short text and retell it adding some more facts.

   Mr. Bennet is an English gentleman living in Hartfordshire with his overbearing wife and their five daughters. He is a poor landowner. Unfortunately for the family if Mr. Bennet dies, their house will be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met. Unexpectedly a young man from a very rich family arrives to their neighborhood. The piece of news excites all of the girls and especially their mother who dreams of giving one of her daughters in marriage to such gentleman. And Mr. Bennet promises to agree for marriage no matter which of the girls Mr. Bingley chooses.

Exercise 2

Answer the questions:

  1. What were Mr. and Mrs. Bennet talking about in the morning?
  2. Who was Mr. Bingley?
  3. Why did Mrs. Bennet and her daughters insist on Mr. Bennet’s visiting Mr. Bingley?
  4. Where did girls want to meet Mr. Bingley?
  5. With whom did Mr. Bingley arrive to the ball?
  6. What can you say about Mr. Darcy?
  7. How did Mr. Darcy act on the ball?
  8. What did Jane and Elizabeth discuss after the ball?
  9. What did Elizabeth think about Mr. Darcy?
  10. Did Mr. Bingley fall in love with Jane? What do you think?

Exercise 3

Speak to your class what this episode is about. Mind the structure of your story:  beginning; the main part; ending.

Exercise 4

-        Describe the landscape and the place where Elizabeth was walking in the beginning of the episode (use the following adjectives – peaceful, picturesque, vivid, sunny, wonderful, impressive, charming etc);

-        What can you say about Elizabeth before we get to know about her (e.g. nice, attractive, good-natured, kind-hearted etc);

-        Speak about The Bennets and the place where they live (you can use the following words – poor, sociable, friendly, warm-hearted, intelligent, tactless etc);

-        What interesting things happened during the ball? (Describe the ball: what did the main characters do; speak about?).

Exercise 5

Speak about the main characters (describe appearance and say what  you think about him/her). While describing pay attention to the structure of your description:

-        Elizabeth

-        Mr. Mrs. Bennet

-        Jane

-        Mr. Bingley

-        Mr. Darcy

Exercise 6

Compare characters:

-        Jane and Elizabeth

-        Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy

Keep to the structure: 1. thesis; 2. arguments; 3. conclusion.

Use the following words and expressions:  at first, secondly, on the contrary, in comparison with, however, therefore etc.

Exercise 7

-        Think and tell your class about another ending of the episode.

-        Think and speak about the possible endings of the story.

Exercise 8

Think and speak about Elizabeth (about her life, her family, her interests etc.).

Exercise 9

Look and analyze the background, the interior where the action of the episode takes place (The Bennets’ house; the atmosphere of the ball; how it influences what is happening).

Exercise 10

Look and analyze the behavior of the main characters (their mimicry, gestures). How does it characterize them? Prove your answers with the arguments.
