There are many famous monuments in any city, but there is one in New York that is famous all over the world. It’s the Statue of Liberty, of course. (приложение 1, слайд 5)

Pupil 1: At the entrance to New York Harbor, in the United States of America, stands one of the world’s greatest and best-loved monuments. It is a statue, 151 feet tall, representing a woman with a crown on her head. High in her right hand she is holding a huge torch. The torch lights up at night. In her left hand is a tablet with a date on it – July 4, 1776. That is the date of the Declaration of Independence. The statue is made of copper. Inside the statue there is an elevator and a stairway from the base to crown. The full name of the monument is “The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World”, but nowadays it is simply known as the Statue of Liberty. The people of France gave the Statue to the Americans in 1886 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of American independence. It was made by a young sculptor named Auguste Bartholdi.

Teacher: Everybody knows that skyscrapers are the symbol of New York. What are the most famous of them? (приложение 1, слайд 6)

Pupil 2: One of the highest buildings of New York is the Empire State Building. It is a 102 storey building which was built in 1931 and financed by the philanthropist and very rich man D. Rockefeller. It was called “the sky-scraper’s king”. It includes 2 observatories. From the top you can see all Manhattan.( приложение1, слайд 7)

Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 commercial buildings between 48th and 51st streets in New York City. Built by the Rockefeller family, it is located in the center of Midtown Manhattan spanning the area between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. Rockefeller was a rich aristocrat. When he decided to build these buildings during the Great Depression, he got no help from the government. So he used his own money to do it. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Trees are the largest and the most beautiful in New York. (приложение 1, слайд 9)

One of the most beautiful skyscrapers is the Chrysler building. The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscraper. It has 77 stories. When the building first opened October 23, 1929, it contained a public viewing gallery near the top, which a few years later was changed into a restaurant. The former observation floor became a private dining room called the Cloud Club.

Teacher: What about the places for rest? (приложение 1, слайды 10, 11)

Pupil 3: The Central Park is the only green place in New York where people can have a rest. It’s a huge park, its construction took 16 years, and it was completed in 1873.Central Park is used by thousands of New Yorkers and visitors every day. Central Park contains several artificial lakes, extensive walking tracks, two ice-skating rinks, a wildlife sanctuary, and grassy areas and playgrounds for children.  Here you can see families walking their dogs and young people riding their bikes and roller-skating. You can also see baseball and soccer games here. Some people come here just to rest. They walk, sit in the sun, listen to music, or go to the zoo. (приложение 1, слайд 12)

Times Square is the center of the theater district. The lights from all the theaters and advertisements are very bright. On New Year's Eve, December 31, crowds of people stand in Times Square and wait for midnight. At midnight everyone sees the annual New Year's Eve ball drop and shouts, "Happy New Year!" (приложение 1, слайд 14)

Broadway is the longest avenue of New York; it stretches nearly 29 kilometres long. It is the place of famous theatres, cafes, restaurants, hotels and shops. The brilliant illuminations at night make this section known as the “Great White Way”. It is the part of the city that never goes to sleep. Buses and subway trains run all night. Restaurants and movies never close their doors.

The 5th and the 7th avenues symbolize the women’s fashion industry of New York.
