Warm-up

Good morning! Today we are going to talk about Christmas presents!

Now, open your Workbooks on p.33 ex.1.  Find and name as many words about Christmas as you can.

‘O.K. Well done!’

Pupils open their Workbooks (W.B.) and call the words they found in the crossword puzzle.

5 min.

Listening skills

Let’s listen to Dino what presents he would like to have for Christmas.

Look at the pictures at the blackboard, they will help you. Be very attentive.

‘Very good!’

Children listen to the tape   twice if it is necessary and answer Teacher’s question.

This exercise is in pupil’s textbook p.52 №1, but they don’t open the book, as they can see the pictures on the blackboard (a fish, a butterfly, a bird).

5min.

Speaking skills

Open your textbooks on p. 52 ex.2. Look at the example and tell what presents pupils of Green school would like  to have.

‘That’s all right!’

Children do this exercise in a chain one by one according to the example. (E.g.: Martin would like to have a book.)

Textbook - ex.2 p.52.

7 min.

Speaking skills:

“Snowball game

Let’s play “Snowball game”! Look at the blackboard, begin with: ”Would you like a book?” then, ask your question. The next pupil will repeat these both questions and ask his one and so on.

 ‘That’s enough for today! ‘

Pupils ask questions with the structure “Would you like” in a chain, try to remember and tell all their friend’s questions.

There are pictures of different presents on the blackboard to help pupils to make up questions quickly.

7 min.

Writing  and grammar skills

Now, open your Barashkova’s books on p. 26 ex.32. Let’s translate the sentences from Russian into English.

‘Are you ready? OK.’

Pupils read and translate aloud and then put down the sentences.

Pupils work in their supplementary books (Barashkova E.A.’ Grammar exercises’). Teacher pays pupil’s attention at the structure ‘Would like’.

8 min.

Grammar skills

Let’s answer Santa’s questions. Open your textbooks on p.54 ex.6. Teacher asks questions that help pupils to remember the rules of answering general questions. We revise the following positions:

-transform the word ‘you’ in the question into ‘I’  in your answer;

-use the verb the question begins with in your answer;

- remember to change verb  ‘to be’ correctly.

‘That’ll do.’

Pupils answer teacher’s questions and then do the exercise in the textbook, using all the revised rules.

Teacher’s questions and pupil’s answers about grammar are in Russian.

7 min.

Reading for information

Let’s read a text  on p.53 ex.3. And answer the question in the task.

Answer another question on the text at p. 54 ex.5.

Make the sentences complete in the ex. 4 on p.53. Find the answers in the text.

‘Well done!’

Some pupils read the text aloud. Then they answer the question given in the task: ‘What present do the pupils of’ Green school’ have for Santa?’(a Christmas song).

Pupils choose the right answer to the question: ‘Why do Miss Chatter’s pupils like Christmas?’

Pupils do this exercise in a chain: one by one.

Several pupils   read the Chunks of the text and others just follow it.

1 min.

Home task

Now, your home task. Look at the blackboard :  (Teacher shows and reads the task: ’Workbook  p.33 №2,3.’)

Open your workbook and have a look! Are there any questions to me?

Pupils put the task down into their diaries.

Pupils open workbooks to look through the tasks and ask questions if they have some.

The task is in pupil’s workbooks (it is in the package to the Biboletova’s textbook).

The 1-st task is to write the words instead of pictures in the text. The second one is to fill in the prepositions in the gaps.

                       Post- lesson   reflection note.

My lesson was based on teaching vocabulary and grammar structures.

  1. I teach a group of 15 pupils. These are mostly nine years old children. Their leading learning style is visual.

So, I tried to stimulate the children visually, using pictures and other materials on the blackboard and in pupil’s textbooks. I also made attempts to develop weaker sensory channels of children to be successful by listening to the tape, playing ‘Snowball game’, talking about grammar aspects, doing exercises in written form.

The pupils’ attitude to studying English is positive, they’re interested in getting new knowledge (they always ask me  before the lesson what we are going to do), they want to get good results so, they ask questions and  for help if they don’t understand something.

We have taken the course- book by Biboletova M.Z., but we also use a supplementary book: E.A. Barashkova’s  grammar exercise- book, which helps to prepare young learners to study grammar deeper and have more practice.

2. At the lesson I worked with the structure ‘would like’ and the words on topic ‘Christmas presents’.

3. I really feel the presentation stage exists in all the activities of the lesson. For example, when we introduce the topic of the lesson, the task of an exercise, ask questions about grammar rules before we start doing exercises, pay pupil’s attention at pictures in the book and on the blackboard .Some warm-up work helps to revise the words of the lesson and is also on the presentation stage.

4. At the practice stage pupils exercised their skills in the structure ‘would like’ and the topic words, using them in listening, reading, speaking and writing. All these activities had their place at the lesson. I used the ‘Snowball game’, discussion of grammar rules, writing and translating of different sentences, listening to Dino on the tape, reading of the letter to Santa  and pupil’s work on this text.

5.  The children didn’t have time to relax, they were very attentive, as they had to react quickly during the lesson.  At the end of the lesson they weren’t tired because they had the change of activities. Some pupils were surprised that the lesson was over so soon! As I used the same words and grammar structure throughout  the lesson in different ways, so I suppose that children have really learnt the words and the rules  taught at the lesson.

6. I’m quite satisfied with my lesson. As the lesson wasn’t based on speaking skills,( so exercise 7 on page 54 in the textbook wasn’t included  into the  lesson plan and wasn’t done),  that’s why next time I’ll pay more attention to speaking: we’ll  talk about New Year holidays, practice in dialogues and children will have a chance to give their opinion on this theme.
