The New Year Tree by Mikhail Zoschenko

Narrator- Hello, boys and girls! I celebrated forty years recently. It means that I have seen a New Year tree for forty times. Fantastic!

    The first three years of my life I did not understand what it is. It is possible that I was on my Mum’s arms and looked at the decorated tree without any admire.    But when I was five I was eager to celebrate this holiday.

(Lyolya comes into the room? The narrator points at her)

 Narrator- Let me introduce my sister Lyoulya. She was seven that time.  What a brave and naughty girl she was! And once she said-

Lyolya- Minka, Mum’s in the kitchen. Come on! Let’s look at the New Year tree! It’s so beautiful!

(Enter the room. There is a decorated tree with presents at the foot.)

 Lyolya- We won’t touch the presents.  What about sweets? Let’s try them.

(She comes up to the tree, takes a sweet ant eats it)

Minka- It’s not fair! I’ll eat something  too!

(Minka comes to the tree and bites a small piece of apple)

Lyolya- Ok! Then I’ll eat another sweet and take that chocolate bar.

(Lyolya eats a sweet just right from the tree. Minka comes up to it, looks it around, sighs and bites the apple once more)

Lyolya- Why did you do that? I’m fed up! I’ll take the third sweet.

Minka- Then I’ll climb up the chair and take something. Not the apple!

(Minka takes the chair, climbs up but falls right on the presents)

Lyolya-  Minka! What have you done? The doll is broken!! You will be punished, I’m sure.

(Voices of the guests are heard. They comes into the room)

Mum- Come in, dear guests. Each of you should come up to me and I’ll give you a treat and a toy.

(Children begin coming up to Mum. She gives a treat and a toy each child. Tthey are very pleased. Then Mum takes the apple bit by Minka.)

Mum- Lyolya, Minka. Come up to me! Who has done it?

Lyolya- Minka has.

Minka- It was she who’s taught me! (Points at Lyolya)

Mum- Lyolya will be punished, be sure. But your toy train I’ll give to that boy. Instead of this bit apple.

(Minka gets angry and hits the boy. He cries, runs to his mother.)

The boy’s mother- I won’t come to you with my child any more!

Minka-Go away then! The train will be mine!

The boy’s mother- It goes without saying your boy will be a bandit.

Mum- How you dare1 It would be better if you go and never come to us.

The girl’s mother- You are right. My girl does not deserve the broken doll.

Lyoulya- Go away too! Then the doll will be mine.

Minka- Go away all of you!

(The guests leave the room)

Mum-It won’t do! I don’t want my children to be greed and angry. I don’t want them to fight and argue with guests. Their life will be hard and they’ll die in loneliness. It’s so pity!

Dad- Go to bed immediately. Both of you.Tomorrow I’ll take all the toys to the guests. (Minka and Lyolya go out of the room)

Narrator- Since that time I haven’t eaten any apple prepared for other children and never hit the weak. May be that’s why doctors say I’m happy and kind. So I wish you
