How St-Petersburg was founded

It is more than three hundred years that Saint-Petersburg stands on the bank of the Neva River. It was founded along the ancient trade water-way for centuries connecting peoples of East and West.

It`s well-known that thousand and a half years ago the banks of the Gulf of Finland, the Neva, the Volkhov were inhabited by different tribes: Vod, Izhora, Korela. Later on, in the middle of the 8-th century, Slav tribes came to these lands. Their peaceful settlement among the native tribes opened a new page in the history of the Neva area. In the 9-th century the Neva lands were joined to the Ancient Russian State and in the 12-th century they were in the possession of rich Novgorod Feudal Republic.

Through the Neva and Volkhov Novgorod had vast trade connections with Denmark, Sweden, the Livonian Order and other European states.

The lands attracted not only merchants, and from the 13-th century a long-lasting fight of Russia against the conquerors for Neva lands began.

In 1240, July 15, Swedish crusaders were defeated on the Neva banks by Prince Alexander Nevsky. Peter I founded a monastery which was named «Alexander Nevsky Lavra» in honor of this battle.

In 1323 the Novgorodians, trying to protect their lands and trade water-ways, constructed the fortress of Oreshek at the Neya source but soon it was captured by the Swedish.

At the beginning of the 16-th century, in the Okhta mouth existed a settlement «Nevskoye Ustiye» throught in the Russians exported rye, hemp, flax and other goods to Europe.

In 1611, having captured the Neva banks, a Swedish general built the fortress of Nienschanz on the Okhtensky cape near Nevskoye Ustiye and in 1617 the Izhora Lands were torn away from Russia.

Oreshek (1323) – Noteburg (from 1348) – Schlisselburg (from 1702)

Nienschanz (1611) – Schlotburg (from 1703) was raised in 1703 by Peter I.

The Neva lands were called Ingermanland by the Swedish. The way to Western Europe for Russian merchants was closed.

1700 – Peter I resumed the struggle with Sweden for Russia`s exit to the Baltic Sea. It was known as the Northern War (1700 -1721). The beginning of the war was not successful. The Swedish King Charles XII had defeated the Russian troops besieging Narva.

1702, October 11 – The fortress Noteburg (former Oreshek) was captured by the Russian Army.

1703 – The Russian Army went to the Neva mouth and on the 25-th of April the fortress

Of Neinschans was besieged. On the 2-nd of May the Russian Army celebrated its victory.

May 9 – Peter I summoned a military council. It was decided to build a new fortress on Zayachy Island.

May 14 – Peter inspected the island. The plan of the fortress was discussed by the military council.

May 15 – The troops were busy cutting the brake to clean the island.

May 16 – The fortress foundation ceremony was held. That was the birthday of St. Petersburg.

Under the thunder of salute, Peter`s associates congratulated the Tsar with the foundation of the new fortress which was named after St Peter and St Paul.

1703, November – The first foreign merchant ship cast its anchor in Petersburg.
