What is a p ersonal c omputer ? Personal computer is a computer for an individual user. Personal computer is based on the microprocessor technology . Personal computers are used in business. At home, the most popular use for personal computers is for playing games. Personal computers first appeared in the late 1970s .
What are p eripheral d evices?
Peripheral devices are computer devices, such as a CD-ROM drive or printer. Peripheral devices can be external, such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, monitor, and scanner. Peripheral devices can be internal, such as a CD-ROM drive or internal modem.
Monitor Monitor is a term for display screen. First monitors were black-and-white. Nowadays , most monitors are colour monitors. Monitors have different screen sizes. A typical size for small monitors is 14 inches.
What is a p rinter? Printer is a device that prints text s or illustrations on paper. Ink-jet printer sprays ink at a sheet of paper. Ink-jet printers produce high-quality text and graphics. Laser printer uses the same technology as copy machines.
What is a mouse? A mouse is a device to move the cursor or pointer a display screen. As you move the mouse, the pointer on the display screen moves in the same direction . Mice usually have two buttons and sometimes three, which have different functions . Some new mice also have a scroll wheel . The mouse was made in 1963. Mice can be m echanical or o ptical. Optical mice have no mechanical moving parts but they are more expensive.
Computer keyboard is the set of keys that enables you to enter data into a computer.
The standard layout of letters, numbers is called QWERTY keyboard b ecause the first six keys on the top row of letters spell QWERTY. The QWERTY keyboard was designed for mechanical type-writers. There is no standard computer keyboard, but many manufacturers imitate the keyboards of PCs. There are different PC keyboards: the original PC keyboard with 84 keys and the keyboard with 101 keys.
What is a Hard Disk Drive (HDD)? Hard disk drive is the mechanism that reads and writes data on a hard disk. Hard disk drives are sometimes called Winchester drives. Winchester is the name of one of the first popular hard disk drive made by IBM in 1973.
Without a computer operating system, a computer would be useless. Operating system is the most important programme that runs on a computer.
Windows are the most popular user operating systems with a friendly interface and multitasking capabilities. The usage of Windows is so simple that even little kids learn how to use it very quickly.
Every computer must have an operating system to run other programmes.
Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data , news and opinions.
