Script of the lesson

Teacher: Good morning, students. I’m glad to see you. Hope you are fine today. Let’s begin our lesson. I want to start with the proverb “Every country has its customs”. What can you say about it? How do you understand the proverb?

Students share their opinions.

Teacher: You are right that every country has its peculiarities and it also concerns the political system of a country. We have already learnt that the UK is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. But what about the USA? Do you think its political system differs? Let’s clear the air today.

Teacher: You have learnt the words to the main theme. But let’s find the topic of today’s lesson. Cross the words to know it. The task is on the interactive board.

Teacher: OK, we have the word BRANCH. And we speak about a political branch, of course. Now let’s give associations that come to your mind when you hear the word-combination Political branch. Do the cluster. The students express their ideas.

But before watching I want you to do some pre-watching tasks. The first is to divide the words into three groups: political activities, political institutions and systems, people involved in politics. Then fill in the table. Work in groups of four. Each group gets the cards with different words. After that the task is checked.

Who is the head of the executive branch?

Which officials are elected and which are appointed in the USA?

Is the head of the state elected directly by the people?

Teacher: Read the introduction of Ex.2 on p.45. you see there are three branches of power in the USA: legislative, executive, judicial. Who/what represents them?

Teacher: Now let’s watch the video. There will be a stop after each part. Watch and listen carefully to fulfill the tasks you are given. The film is divided into three parts. Each student gets printed tasks. After the completion of each task the teacher shows the keys to check the answers and if it is necessary gives comments.
