Reading Pushkin

Ведущий: Alexander Pushkin is the greatest Russian poet. His wonderful poems have been translated into many languages. His work has inspired creative people to compose music and to write books.

Ученик 1: For the first time the name of Pushkin was mentioned in England in 1821 when “The new monthly Magazine” published a review on “Ruslan and Ludmila”. George Borrow, a poet, a translator and a song collector was the first to present Pushkin’s works to the public. He even received the author’s personal gratitude for the book.

Ученик 2: The first British critic to understand the true power of Pushkin’s poetry was Thomas Show. He come to Russia in 1840 and remained there till the end of his life. In 1845 show published an article “Pushkin, the Russian poet” and make a number of translations for the journal in Edinburg. His contemporaries admired his ability to convey Pushkin ideas in English.

Ученик 3: In January 1883 an English-Russian literature Society was creative in Great Britain. It edited a journal and published translations of Russian poetry. A lot of articles were written to commemorate the 100th birthday of Pushkin.

Ученик 4: The novel “Eugene Onegin” was translated in English by a British journalist Spalding. It was a careful but not a very artistic translation. Such characteristic belongs to Ivan Turgenev who made a review on the work.

Ученик 5: It must be said that later Pushkin’s fairy tales become popular thanks to Oliver Elton. His translation of “Eugene Onegin” is considered to be the best.

A prey to mute despair and anguish,

To vain pursuits the world esteems,

Long did I hear your soothing accents,

Long did your features gracefully haunt my dreams.

Time passed. A rebel storm-blast scattered

The reveries that once were mine

And I forgot your soothing accents,

Your features gracefully diving.

In dark days of enforced retirement

I gazed upon grey skies above

With on ideals to inspire

No one to cry for, live for, love.

I looked up - you again were there,

A fleeting visions, the quintessence

Of all that’s beautiful and rare.

And now my heart throbs with elation,

Hailing the resurrection of

Divine ideals, inspiration,

Life, tears and happiness, and love.

I loved you, and that love, to die refusing,

May still – who knows! – be smoldering in my breast

Pray be not painted – believe me, of my choosing

I’d never have you troubled or distressed.

I loved you mutely, hopelessly and truly,

With shy yet fervent tenderness aglow;

Mine was a jealous passion and unruly…

May God grant that another’ll love you so!
