I travel a lot for competitions and I’ve made friends with swimmers from other Australian cities and from other parts of the world.’

Task 1. Read the text and questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

The Artist

People think being an artist must be a wonderful way to earn one’s living. And of course, there are lots of great things about working for oneself, at home alone, even in a cold studio like mine. What I really like is that nobody tells me what time to start in the morning. I like to paint as soon as I wake up, which is always early, but isn’t the same time every day. And nobody tells me what to wear, or whether I can take the afternoon off and go to a football match.

But then, I have no one to chat with when I am bored, no one to discuss last night’s match with during the office lunch hour. Sure, I can spend the afternoon doing something I enjoy like cycling or gardening if I choose. But the work will still be there when I do finally get back home.

Unfortunately, working at home means that people can always find me, whether I am bored or not, and once I have answered the doorbell, it’s too late - my thoughts have been interrupted. No one would dream of calling in if I worked in an office, but I find myself listening to friends’ troubles. As they talk, my ideas disappear and I feel increasingly stressed thinking of my work waiting to be done.

However, when I hear the traffic news on the radio, and imagine my friends sitting miserably in their cars in a jam, feeling bored, or waiting unhappily for an overcrowded tram in the rain, I realize that I really haven’t got much to complain about. I turn on the music which will start me thinking, turn it up really loudly and begin another picture.

How to reduce Christmas waste (мусор/отходы)

Did you know that every hour the UK throws away enough waste to fill a theatre?

So think about how much more we throw away at Christmas!

Read and see what little things you can do to help reduce waste at Christmas.

If we put all the wrapping we throw away in a line it would reach the Moon - that’s a lot of paper! But it’s very easy to recycle; use recycling banks at most supermarkets. Why not try giving presents in gift bags? That way you can reuse them again next year and save on paper! Don’t throw away Christmas cards! You can try cutting them up and making new cards or gift tags out of them. You’ll be ready for next Christmas and save a few pennies!

If you have a real Christmas tree it’s a great thing to recycle. There are lots of companies that will collect it for you. After recycling people can use it as compost to help next year’s trees or to cover pathways.

How about getting a living Christmas tree with roots? That way it will keep on growing year after year and you can even plant it in your garden.

We throw out over 7 million tons of food every year. So why not help out in the kitchen and get creative when cooking it Christmas turkey. If you’ve got a compost bin in your garden you can throw in all those vegetation peelings.

Birds love Christmas leftovers too, any scraps of fruitcake and mince pies will go down a treat. It will give them energy and help them through the cold winter months.

If you get any presents that don’t fit or have old things that you won’t need anymore don’t throw them away. There are a lot of charities out there who will pass on gifts to people in need.

Nowadays, not many Christians fast, instead preferring to give something up for Lent such as chocolate. Because fasting meant that lots of food would spoil during this period, traditionally people would use up their eggs, milk and sugar by making pancakes.  Nowadays, even if people are not fasting, many people still make and eat pancakes on this day. Some people enjoy sweet topping such as sugar and lemon or Nutella. Other people prefer savoury pancakes.
  3. It is a celebration of a prominent Scottish poet. In Scotland people have a special dinner. Men wear kilts and people listen to traditional bagpipe music, they dance, read poetry and share a meal of haggis (a traditional Scottish dish of sheep heart, liver and lungs) with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes).

Natural Books

We invited four leading naturalists to tell us about the wildlife classic that has influenced them most.

A
Geoffrey Lean

At least it wasn’t hard to choose the author. As an environmental journalist, one advantage of longevity is that I have had the chance to meet some of the giants who pioneered thinking in the field. Of these, none stood, indeed, still stands, taller than a small, frail woman, Barbara Ward. I can’t think of anyone else more at the heart of environmental issues in postwar Europe. She has synthesised her experience of
various environmental movements into her own compelling philosophy. Unwillingly ‘volunteered’ to cover the field, I found, as a young journalist, that she, more than anyone, made it all make sense. Picking the book was much harder. It could have been Only One Earth or Progress for a Small Planet. But despite its title (which sounded old-fashioned, even in 1976), The Home of Man is, to me, Barbara’s most important book. Its focus is on the explosive growth of the world’s cities, but its canvas is the great themes to which she devoted her life. It is as eloquent and as impassioned a plea as exists for what we would now call ‘sustainable human development’. In the hundreds of books I have read since, I have yet to meet its equal.

B
Linda Bennett

When I open the pages of Signals for Survival by Niko Tinbergen, I can hear the long calls of herring gulls, recall the smell of the guano in the hot sun and visualise the general hullabaloo of the colony. This book explains superbly, through words and pictures, the fascinating world of animal communication. Read Signals for Survival and then watch any gull colony, and the frenzy of activity changes from apparent chaos to a highly efficient social structure. You can see which birds are partners, where the boundaries are and, later on in the season, whole families can be recognised. A distinguished behaviourist, Niko Tinbergen came from that rare breed of academics who wish to explain their findings to the layperson. His collaboration in this book with one of this century’s most talented wildlife artists, Eric Ennion, was inspirational and has produced a book of interest to anyone with a love of wildlife. His spontaneous style of painting came from years of watching and understanding birds. With just a minimal amount of line and colour, he brings to life how one gull is an aggressor, how another shows appeasement. This is the art of a true field naturalist.
C
Lee Durrell

Most definitely, My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell is the book that has had the greatest influence on my life. Beyond the obvious reason that it ultimately led me to a wonderful husband, and an exciting career in conservation, this extraordinary book once and for all defined my devotion to the natural world. I was doing research work into animal vocalisations in Madagascar when I first read the book. I had been there two years and was discouraged by the number of setbacks I was encountering but when, at the end of the day, I opened My Family and Other Animals to where I had left off the night before, the world became a brighter place. Animals, people, joy and beauty inextricably woven together – a microcosm of a world worth saving. Many people say that our species is the worst because of the terrible things we have done to the others. But I like to think back to Gerald as a boy in My Family and Other Animals, looking at the world’s inhabitants as a whole, a family whose members, be they good, bad or indifferent, are nevertheless so intertwined as to be inseparable. And that is a concept we all need to grasp.
D   Bruce Pearson
A copy of The Shell Bird Book, by James Fisher, found its way into my school library shortly after it was first published in 1966. I was drawn to it at once, especially to the 48 colour plates of birds by Eric Ennion, painted, as the jacket puts it, ‘….. with particular skill and charm’. It was those Ennion images which captured my attention. I already had copies of other bird books and had spent several holidays learning to identify birds. They encouraged me to begin sketching what I saw as an aid to identification. But in The Shell Bird Book there was so much more to feast on. As well as the glorious Ennion paintings, there were chapters on migrants and migration, a review of the history of birds in Britain, and, best of all, a chapter on birds in music, literature and art. It was the broad span of ornithological information and the exciting images that steered me towards being more of a generalist in my appreciation of birds and the natural world. The book made it clear that my emotional and creative response to nature was as valid and as possible as a rational and scientific one. And, as art was a stronger subject for me than Maths or Physics, I began to see a door opening for me.

Which naturalist
1) says that the book contained a wider range of material than other books he/she owned?

2) says that the human race is often blamed for its destructive relationship with wildlife?

3) says that the book can make the organisation of a particular animal group clear to an
observer?

4) explains what motivated him/her to start drawing?

5) describes experiencing a change of mood when reading the book?

6) praises the book for both its use of language and depth of feeling?

7) describes the sensory experiences evoked by the book?

8) thinks the book encouraged greater optimism about a personal skill?

9) mentions an initial reluctance to become involved in investigating environmental issues?

10) attributes the skill of the illustrator to extensive observation?

11) has come into contact with many leading environmental figures through work?

12) attributes the immediate appeal of the book to its illustrations?

13) first read the book at a time when experiencing problems?

14) comments on the illustrator’s ability to show animal behaviour through deceptively simple pictures?

15) says that no other book has proved to be as good as the one nominated?

TASK 2.

Read the article and for questions 16-21 choose the correct letter A, B, C or D. Remember to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

GOLD

Gold has a long and a complex history. From its first discovery, it has symbolized wealth and power. Gold has caused obsession in men and nation, destroyed some cultures and given control to others.

Archaeological digs suggest the use of gold began in the Middle East where the first known civilizations began. The oldest pieces of gold jewelry found in the tomb of Queen Zer and that of Queen Pu-abi of Ur in Sumeria in a find from the third millennium BC. Gold was also favored be the Egyptian pharaohs. Over the centuries, most of their tombs were raided, but the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamen was discovered undisturbed by modern archeologists. Inside, the largest collection of gold and jewelry in the world was found. They uncovered a gold coffin whose quality showed the advanced state of Egyptian craftsmanship and goldworking. The Persian Empire, in what is now Iran, also made frequent use of gold as part of the religion of Zoroastrianism. Persian goldwork is most famous for its animal art, which was modified after the Arabs conquered the area in 642 AD.

When Rome began to flourish, the city attracted talented gold artists who created a wide variety of gold jewelry. The use of gold in Rome was later expanded to include household items and furniture in the homes of the very wealthy. During the reign of emperor Constantine (306-337 AD), the citizens of Rome wore necklaces that contained coins with the image of the emperor. As Christianity spread through the European continent, Europeans ceased burying their dead with jewelry. As a result, few gold items survive from the Middle Ages, except those of royalty and items belonging to churches.

In the Americas, the skill of pre-Columbian cultures in the use of gold was highly advanced long before the arrival of the Spanish.

Native goldsmiths had mastered most of the techniques known by their European contemporaries when the Spanish arrived in 1492. They were adept at methods of working  gold into items of jewellery. The Spanish conquerors melted down most of the gold that they took from the peoples of this region, and the remaining examples of pre-Columbian jewelry still found originate from modern excavations of grave sites. The greatest deposits of gold from these times were found in the Andes mountains and in Columbia.

During the frontier days of the United States, news of the discovery of gold in a region could result in thousands of new settlers , many risking their lives to find gold. Gold rushes occurred in many of the Western States, the most famous being in California at Sutter’s Mill. Elsewhere in the world, gold rushes happened in Austria around the town in South Africa near Johannesburg, and in Canada in 1897.

The rise of gold standard was originally meant to stabilize the global economy, dictating that a nation must limit its issued currency to the amount of gold it held in reserve. Great Britain was the first country to adopt the gold standard in 1821, followed in the 1870s by much of the rest of Europe. The system remained in effect until the end of the First World War, after which the United States was the only country still keeping to the gold standard. After the war, countries were allowed to keep their reserves in major currencies instead of gold. The onset of the Great Depression marked the end of the US export of gold in the 1930s. By 1950, the US dollar had a largely replaced gold in international trade.

While gold is an ancient metal of wealth, commerce and beauty, it also has a number of unique properties that make it invaluable in industry. These properties include resistance to corrosion, electrical conductivity, ductility and malleability, infrared (heat) reflectivity and thermal conductivity.

Gold’s superior electrical conductivity, malleability and resistance to corrosion have made it vital to the manufacture of components used in a wide range of electrical products and equipment, including computers, telephones, mobile phones and home appliances. Gold also has extraordinary high reflective powers that are relied upon in the shielding that protects spaceships and satellites from solar radiation, and in industrial and medical lasers that use gold-coated reflectors to focus light energy.

Because gold is biologically inactive, it has become a vital tool for medical research and is even used in the direct treatment of arthritis and other intractable diseases.

The demand for gold in industry is steady and growing. The supply of gold from government stores and from mining operations is limited and will remain so. Demand from investors who want to posses this precious metal is steady, and increases during periods of world crisis or instability. The result is a market with a very positive potential. Investment gold is therefore an excellent hedge against inflation, and protects earnings for the future. Modern investors can invest in  gold in the  traditional way- by purchasing gold in the form of bars or coins- or they can trade in gold electronically, or by investing in gold mining or refining companies.

A) capacity to conduct electricity.

B) ability to cast off radiation.

D) capacity to withstand a vacuum.

   18) Gold has many uses in the field of medicine because

A) it does not react organically.

B) it a common metal.

C) it can treat arthritis.

D) it is highly reflective.
