What associations do you have with what you have just seen?

(Big Ben, The Statue of Liberty, Westminster Abbey, ………………………..)

Where can you see Big Ben? What country is the Statue of Liberty in? What is common with these countries? What language do people in America and Great Britain speak? What do you think about the topic of our lesson?

Today our lesson is devoted to the topic “English-speaking countries”. As it is clear from the title we will speak about those countries where the official language is English. Today I invite you to travel around the English-speaking countries. We`ll know something about these countries and their capitals and where are they situated and the like. We have researched three countries this month. Let`s talk about their flags, emblems, symbols, dates and currency. We shall listen to three groups-three projects. Get ready to ask the guestions to your classmates and share your ideas about the USA, Gr. Britain and Australia. Who will be the first to speak today?

  1. We’ll travel to the USA first. Listen to  and try to ask questions about this country after their presentation. You can make notes.
  2. We continue our traveling. Let’s stop. The United Kingdom is here.
  3. Let’s travel to Australia .Have you got any questions?

Today at the lesson you have learnt a lot of interesting information about English speaking countries. We want you to do quiz. We want to learn what you know about these countries. You may use your notes.

I.Our first competition is “Shape” (Географическоеположение)

So, I’ll give each team these sheets of paper. You can see the shapes of different English-speaking countries there. Guess what countries have such shapes. You have three minutes for this task. (В течение трёх минут учащиеся обсуждают свои ответы.)

Well. Time is up. Let’s check. Please, show me the USA, the United Kingdom, Australia .Now Please stick these sheets of paper to your project.

II. The next competition is “Stop Game” (столицы)

Teacher: So, the rules of this game are the following: I read you some texts about capitals of English-speaking countries but I don't mention the name of the city. You listen to me very attentively and try to guess this city. If you are ready to answer you can cry: "Stop!" and name the capital. If the answer is right you'll  get extra information about English-speaking countries for your project. If the answer is wrong I continue my reading. The other team has right to answer. The team that will guess more capitals wins and get more usefull information about English-speaking countries. Are the rules of the game clear? Let's begin then.

Texts for reading

  1. It is a very old and big city.  It is situated at mouth of the Thames-river. It consists of several main districts, and also includes numerous suburbs. The main districts had formed during the long life of the city. For example, the City is the center of business life, or the Westminster where the Queen lives, or West-End, East-End and Cheap-Side… Names of all these districts are well-known in the world .
  2. This capital is located on the north bank of the Potomac River . It was founded in 1791 and named in honour of the first president. There is not much industry it the city. And – what is more interesting – no building in the city may be more than 40 metres tall. The highest building in this capital is the Capitol, the seat of  Congress. The Pentagon, located in the suburb of Arlington , is the headquarters of the military department.
  3. . It is not the biggest city with the population only of 280,000 people. Many cities in this country are much larger, for example Sydney where 3.5 million people live. But this city is very beautiful. It was built in 1913 by architect Griffin and was planned as a capital.. There is a university and an international airport in this city.
  4. The olympic games are an international sports festival that began in ancient greece. The 2012 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad was a major international sport event, that took place in this city, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. More than 10,000 athletes participated.
  5. Originally the White House was grey and was called the Presidential Palace. It was built from 1792 to 1800 in this capital. In 1812 when the US and Britain went to war the Presidential Palace was burned. After the war it was recovered and to cover the marks of the fire, the building was painted white. It became known as the White House. The White House is one of the most popular tourist attractions. Every year more than 1,5 million visitors go through the 5 rooms that are open to the public.
  6. The centre of this city is a small hill. Several streets run from that hill. Special charm is given by an artificial lake in the centre of the city. A fountain more than 100 metres high is in the western part of the lake. At night powerful lights illuminate the water. It is the Captain Cook Fountain, one of the main places of interest inthis capital. Another one is a memorial military museum.

I see now you know the capitals of English – speaking countries.
