School uniform

In many countries, such as Great Britain, India, Ireland, Australia, pupils should wear school uniform at schools. In Japanese schools uniform is obligatory for everyone. In France school uniform existed from 1927 to 1968. In Poland it existed to 1988. There is no uniform in Germany. There is also no uniform at public schools in Russia. Let’s consider what great stylists, doctors, parents and pupils think about school uniform.

Vyacheslav Zaitsev (great stylist) said: “Children should be neatly dressed; details of clothes shouldn’t distract pupils from studies. Uniform should be comfortable, hygienic and safety. It should show gender of child. The material can have different colors, but not gaudy colors. It will be good for pupils to feel equality in order not to have complexes in future. If some pupils wear expensive fashionable clothes, it could offend other ones, because their parents can’t afford this kind of clothes for their children”

Lilith Rashoyan (stylist) said: “Be sure, school uniform is not mean for “decorating” pupils at schools. The main goal of uniform is to discipline children and make them equal.

Maria Bezrukih (Doctor of Medicine): “Pupils shouldn’t wear clothes with gaudy colors, because they irritate children and tire their eyes. When wearing jeans blood circulation in pelvis become worse and as a result malfunction of urinary bladder, bowels and organs of genital system. Disease of nervous system, astigmatism, overtired state and constant headache all that problems can provoke “irregular” clothes”

Georgiy Sergeevich Victorov (school director) said: “School is serious institution. Pupils go to school in order to get knowledge, and it is some kind of job for them, but if it is job they should look conformably to this place. For example, when you come to the restaurant you see that every worker wear suitable clothes. When you come to the bank you see that all staff is uniformed. And it is certain norms, principles and discipline. It is possible that you see that banker on bike with headscarf, but it can only after work. Another example, just imagine that you come to the interview in good firm in order to get a job and your potential employer clothed in jeans, sneakers and sport shirt, it is not good idea, do you agree? Or waiter in restaurant clothed in leather coat and ankle boots, it is also bad.

Anna Andreevna (mother of one pupil) said: “I think that it is very good when children are well-dressed. I like school uniform, because it makes pupils disciplined, neat and it prepare children to adult life. Moreover there is no need to buy new expensive fashionable clothes, if our children wear uniform”

Moreover we interview some children at school; we asked them what they think about school uniform.

Maria: “I don’t like school uniform because it deprives opportunity of self-expression. Everybody who wears uniform is identical with other; I don’t want to be a clone. Furthermore uniform has dark colors as for me it better to wear clothes with bright colors to be more interesting and funny”

Aleksandr: “I’m rapper and I want to dress in this way of style, I mean wide jeans, long T-shirt, chain with big pendant that is why I don’t like uniform”

Margarita: “It seems to me that clothes should be colorful, interesting and different. It’s very difficult to wear the same clothes every day. Uniform is too boring and dark, plain and not fashionable. I think that adult people can’t understand us”

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Jacky and Harman

H:  Hi, Jacky! Don’t you just hate having to wear these ugly school uniforms? I feel like I can’t express myself in these clothes. It’s not fair that I can’t choose what to wear.

J:  I like wearing a uniform to school. They make it easier for the teachers to find you if you got lost on an excursion. No one would find you if you aren’t wearing a uniform.

H: Yes, but they are so plain. Clothes that you buy at the shops look much cooler. I feel so angle in these ugly clothes.

J:  You don’t need to wear cool clothes to be cool. There are lots of other ways to be cool like, for example, handing your homework in on Friday or not running on concrete.

H: True, but uniforms make everyone look the same when they are all so different. I want to be different to my other classmates.

J:  But it’s good that we have the same clothes. It makes us remember that we are all at the same school and that we should be proud that we all go to school here.

H:  Whatever Jacky, I think   uniforms make school boring. If people had different clothes with different styles they would make school much more interesting.

J:  But we are here to learn, Harman. If everyone was wearing their own clothes then maybe there would be less focus on their school work.

H: I disagree, Jacky. By the way, you have a very deep voice for a girl. Your clothes don’t make any difference what you learn. I can learn to wear whatever I want.

J: But, Harman, we have to live by rules to succeed in life. Wearing a school uniform teaches students to follow rules. You can’t just do whatever you want, you know.

H:  My mum and dad think that school uniforms are so expensive. They can buy cheaper clothes at K-market made in China.

J:  But Harman, without uniform there would be a lot of pressure to wear the latest fashionable clothes. By the way, Harman, you must spend a lot of money on hairy products. You shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not you look cool at school. I feel safe and comfortable in my school uniform and it helps me learn.

H:  I disagree, Jacky, but you make some convincing points. It doesn’t mean you are wrong. We just have different opinions.

  1. Why doesn’t Harman want to wear school uniform?
  2. Why does Jacky think it is better to wear school uniform rather than other clothes?
  3. Why does Jacky can’t persuade Harman to wear uniform?

5. Watch the news bulletin which is devoted to school uniform, then answer the questions. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBGkoHcwLy4 )

  1. Why is it obligatory to wear uniform in South Africa? Why does the white-red color of uniform is very important for them?
  2. What exactly did Andrea Petch say about uniform?
  3. By what means did school uniform become fashionable among teenagers?
  4. What do Japanese do to modernize uniform?
  5. Is it true that uniform for Japanese is a way to find the own style?

6. Now work in pairs and fill in a table: “Pros and Cons of school uniform”

Pros

Cons

7. Now answer the question: “Is school uniform good or bad?” Prove your point of view, give some details and examples
