  1. The Met Office and the Environment Agency are warning the public to be prepared for possible travel difficulties as many areas see 20-40 mm of rain and some areas see up to 80 mm falling by the end of Monday. Steve Willington, Met Office Chief Forecaster said: “A deep area of low pressure is moving North from the Bay of Biscay and will bring a very unsettled kind of weather to all parts of the UK this week. The public should keep up to date with the latest forecast and warnings for their area on our website and with forecasts on TV and radio. Everyone should be prepared for effects of heavy rain and strong winds as they combine to bring the potential for travel problems and localized flooding over the next few days”.
  2. Metop-B was launched by a Soyuz Rocket from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, yesterday and once in orbit will collect critical data for weather forecasters, such as the Met Office. Along with its partner satellite Metop-A, it will orbit the Earth from pole to pole at an altitude of around 800 km, taking measurements including temperature, humidity and cloud properties, as well as snow and ice cover, sea surface temperature and land vegetation. EUMETSAT will take over control of the Metop- B satellite from the European Space Operations Centre on 20 September 2012, and will spend around six months checking the performance of the satellite in orbit and validating all data taken from its observations. Once this is completed the Metop-B satellite will be declared operational.
  3. The Royal Navy submarines are to play a potentially important role helping map the effects of climate change deep under water in the world’s coldest environment. Very little is currently known about the areas of water beneath the ice of the Arctic as sensors for long-term monitoring are difficult to place. However, submarines, including those based at Devonport, routinely travel through these remote areas and now the information that crews gather will be made available to scientists. Tim Clarke, a marine scientist at the Ministry of Defence’s Science and Technology Laboratory, said it would make a big difference.” What this represents is the availability of important scientific data, previously inaccessible, which can only move the study forward”, he said.
  4. One of the most famous climbers of all time, Apa Sherpa, who has conquered Everest a record 21 times, says he may not be able to do it again. Why? Because climate change is making the world’s highest and most dangerous peak unclimbable. Apa , popularly known as the “Super Sherpa” , who first conquered Everest in 1989, told AFP that the absence of snow on the mountain concerns him greatly. He said: “In 1989 when I first climbed Everest there was a lot of snow and ice but now most of it has just become bare rock. That, as a result, is causing more rock falls which is a danger to the climbers”.
  5. A major winter storm brought very strong winds across much of the UK on 3-rd of January, 2012. The worst affected area was southern Scotland. In this area, this storm was judged as the most severe for 13 years- since 26-th of December, 1998, with wind speed exceeding those of the recent storm of 8-th of December, 2011. Very strong winds were also experienced across much of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This storm was followed by a further extremely windy period from 4-th to 5-th of January,2012 – with further damaging winds across northern and eastern England. These storms followed a particularly turbulent time of weather from late November to mid- December.
  6. The idea of creating a weather forecast using dynamic equations was first put forward by English mathematician, Lewis Fry Richardson, in 1922. He realized the dynamics of the atmosphere could be modelled by doing thousands of equations, thus being able to predict the weather. In a pre-computer age, however, the only way to apply his numerical method was by hand. He estimated it would take 64,000 people to perform the calculations needed to make a forecast in time for it to be useful. While this wasn’t practical, Richardson’s theory formed the basis for weather forecasting as technology improved.
  7. The weather can have a huge impact on sports – from cycling to surfing, cricket to beach volleyball. As the UK’s national weather service, we’re always there when it matters, applying our science so that people can make the most of the weather. Many sports are affected by the weather in some way and conditions are important to athletes and spectators alike. Sometimes the impact of weather on sport is clear for all to see. It can help or hinder – headwinds make running and cycling harder, while tailwinds help push us forward. Some world records are invalid if set under certain conditions. Most of those participating in indoor sports like squash or badminton aren’t too worried, but for sports like hockey or windsurfing, the weather is central to the entire event.

Purcell was a small man. He owned a pet shop. He sold cats, dogs, monkeys and birds. Each morning when he completed the routine of opening his shop, he sat down on a high stool behind the counter and read morning newspaper.

It was a cold rainy day. Mr. Parcell was reading a newspaper as usual when a customer appeared in the shop and said that he wanted something in a cage. “Something in a cage?” Mr Parcell was a bit confused. “You mean some sort of pet?”

“I mean what I said!” answered the man. “Something in a cage. Something alive that is in a cage.”

“Isee”, said the shopkeeper not sure that he did.

He started to offer different pets, but it seemed that the price was too big for the customer. At last he decided to have two white doves for five dollars. Mr Parcell handed the cage to him.

“Listen,” the man said suddenly. “How long do you think it took me to make those five dollars?”

Mr Parcell was in a state of panic, but he asked, “Why, how long?”

The customer laughed. “Ten years! I’ve spent ten years in jail. Ten years! Fifty cents a year!”

He took his cage and left the shop. Mr Parcell came up to the shop window to look at the customer who was holding the cage and looking at his purchase. Then he opened the cage and took the birds out. Soon they disappeared in the grey sky.

  1. READING(11 points)

Time: 40 minutes

Read the text and then answer questions 11-15.

Different Colours can affect us in many different ways; that’s according to Verity Allen.  In her new series «Colour me Healthy”, Verity looks at the ways that colours can influence how hard we work and the choices we make.  They can even change our emotions and even influence how healthy we are.

«Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things?» says Verity.  “Our toothpaste is always white or blue or maybe red.  It’s never green.  Why not?  For some reason we think that blue and white is clean, while we think of green products as being a bit disgusting.  It’s the same for businesses.  We respect a company, which writes its name in blue or black, but we don’t respect one that uses pink or orange.  People who design new products can use these ideas to influence what we buy.”

During this four-part series, Verity studies eight different colours, two colours in each programme.  She meets people who work in all aspects of the colour industry, from people who design food packets, to people who name the colours of lipsticks.  Some of the people she meets clearly have very little scientific knowledge to support their ideas, such as the American “Colour Doctor” who believes that serious diseases can be cured by the use of coloured lights.  However, she also interviews real scientists who are studying the effects of green and red lights on mice, with some surprising results.

Overall, it’s an interesting show, and anyone who watches it will probably find out something new.  But because Verity is goes out of her way to be polite to everyone she meets on the series, it’s up to the viewers to make their own decisions about how much they should believe.

11. What is the writer doing in this text?

  1. giving information about how colours influence us
  2. reporting what happens in a new television series
  3. giving information about a television presenter
  4. giving his opinion of a recent television show

12. Which of the following shows the probable content of the four shows?

  2. Part 1 – Blue and Black; Part 2 – Red and Orange; Part 3 – White and Grey; Part 4 – Green and Yellow
  3. Part 1 – Meeting Designers; Part 2 – Meeting People who Name Colours; Part 3 – Meeting Doctors; Part 4 – Meeting Scientists
  4. Part 1 – Cleaning Products; Part 2 – Make-up; Part 3 – Clothes; Part 4 – Food

13. According to Verity, why is a knowledge of colour important?

  1. It can help you to choose the best products.
  2. It can give you new ideas.
  3. It can help you to change people’s minds.
  4. It can help you to sell products.

14. Who does the writer respect least?

  2. The people who name lipsticks
  3. The «Colour Doctor»
  4. The scientists who work with mice

1. Women’s Fashion

2. Ways of Moving Around the City

3. The City of Walls and Secrets

4. City’s Life Is Its Residents’ Lives

5. Selling, Preparing and Consuming Food

6. City of Contrasts

7. Each Gender Has Its Own Occupation

8. Variety of Sounds

A. The city of Fez — the third largest metropolis in Morocco — has expanded far beyond its original 9th-century borders and has modernised in many ways. But its medieval medina, the oldest market in the world, remains the heart of the city, a Unesco World Heritage site that houses a maze of narrow, twisting streets where people gather, shop, eat and pray. Fez's medina is also a perfect place to uncover the stories, and the secrets, of the people who live and work behind its walls. As author Paul Bowles, who lived in Tangier for 52 years, wrote: "The blank wall is Fez's symbol, but it is this very secretiveness, which gives the city its quality."

B. "In the medina, the freshest food is set on the Earth to be sold," said Merieme Zared, a tour guide and cooking instructor with Cafe Clock, referring to how vendors place their produce on the ground. The food's proximity to the earth, she explained, represents its closeness to it. In the Al Achabine souk, tiny restaurants abound, cooking food from these fresh ingredients. They sell fried fish marinated in charmoula, a traditional Moroccan marinade; and thick bissara, a soup made with fava beans. Around the corner, smoke billows from a grill cooking meat kebabs; inside the restaurant, with barely enough room for the cook to move, men sit crammed around a small table, eating meat and bread with their hands.

 C. "Balak, balak," the donkey drivers shout to clear the way as the animals carry goods in and out of the medina. Cars are not allowed into Fez's old city and couldn't fit through the streets if they tried; residents make do with getting around on foot. In Bowles' 1955 novel The Spider's House, set in Fez, he wrote that being without cars means that adhering to a schedule is impossible. After all, when you are on foot, unexpected events like a running into a friend can happen on the way.

 D. From the city’s rooftops, the medina is part cacophony, part harmony. Looking over the streets, many appear so narrow they all but disappear. But even if you cannot always see them, you can hear them: hammers bang on metal; voices shout to each other; a child cries; and hand-drawn carts rattle over the Talaa Kebira, the medina's main thoroughfare.

E. In Fez, the streets and cafes are dominated by men. While women can be seen outside buying groceries or shopping for other household supplies, they are always moving. It is men who linger in cafes over glasses of mint tea and in shops holding conversations with friends. The public visibility of only one gender may tie to persistent patriarchal attitudes: in a poll taken from 2011 to 2013 by Afrobarometer, an independent research group in Africa, only 50 % of respondents in Morocco were in favour of women's equal opportunities, compared to 75 % of those in eastern and southern Africa.

F. Women and girls admire mannequins modelling colourful kaftans and takchitas, the traditional Moroccan dresses often worn for formal occasions. These kaftans are dressier versions of what most women in Fez typically wear in the winter: long, straight robes made of polar fleece, ideal for covering up and keeping warm, as most houses in Fez do not have heating. Other women choose to wear jeans and jackets. It also is not uncommon to see women who do not wear a hijab, the traditional veil worn to cover hair.

G. Whatever the future might hold for Morocco, one thing is certain: within the medina’s ramparts, the old, unhurried way of life will continue, no matter how fast the world changes around it. “Fez does not have to rely upon its ancient structures for its claim to importance,” Bowles wrote. “Its interest lies not so much in relics of the past as in the life of the people there; that life is the past, still alive and functioning.” That holds true today. Fez is its ancient streets, but more importantly it is the people who live behind its walls.

Barget was having a holiday sale. Sara bought a four-slice toaster for $29.95 plus tax. The regular price was $39.95. She paid by check. On her way home, Sara stopped at MilkPlus to buy a gallon of nonfat milk. The milk was $3.50. Sara got 50 cents back in change.

Sara arrived home at 10 a.m. John and the kids were still sleeping. She woke them up and then made a hot and nutritious breakfast for everyone.

Neil:  Hi, Jessica! I thought about going to the movies or to the park yesterday. I called you but nobody answered.

Jessica: Oh, sorry I missed it. It was Ronny’s birthday yesterday, and it was noisy there. I just didn’t hear you call.

Neil: Ronny’s birthday? I didn’t know about that. Was it fun?

Jessica: Oh yes! Ronny has just come back from France he worked there for two months. And he talked a lot about it.

Neil: Worked in France? Why France? And what did he do there?

Jessica: He actually wanted to do a summer job to earn some pocket money. And he also wanted to travel. And he needed to practice his French as he’s going to university in two years time. That’s why he went there.

Neil: And what kind of job did he do? He’s not qualified for anything yet, is he? Too young.

Jessica: That’s right. But he was lucky. His family has good friends in France. And  the friends needed an au pair for a couple of months.

   Neil: They needed what?

Jessica: Not what but who. They needed an au pair. Au pair is a French word for a baby sitter.

Neil: Ronny … doing babysitting! I can’t imagine that!

Jessica: Neither ca I. but he said he enjoyed it. The French family has a seven year boy and Ronny looked after him every day from 10 am till 4 pm. He taught him how to play football and how to play chess. And he also taught him a little English. The boy was delighted.

Neil: I’m not surprised. Every kid would wish for a baby sitter like Ronny. It was really fun for the boy, I bet.

Jessica: It was. And after 2 pm Ronny was on his own. He said he made several friends there. And they went to Paris together every weekend. Ronny is crazy about football, you know, and once they even managed to see the French national football team playing against the Italian national team at the Stade de France stadium outside Paris!

Nail: Wow! Now I see why he enjoyed his summer. I wouldn’t mind doing babysitting myself if it gave me a chance to see the coolest teams and matches.

Welcome to London, one of the most exciting cities in the world. There are a lot of things to see and to do in London. Here are some ideas.

  1. London has many beautiful old buildings and monuments. See Big Ben and the houses of Parliament, which stand on the River Thames near Westminster Abbey. Go down the river to the Tower of London, and visit St. Paul’s Cathedral too.
  2. People come all over the world to visit the British Museum. For art lovers, the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square has a beautiful collection of paintings, and so has the Tate Gallery in Westminster.
  3. Go to Oxford Street, where there are several large department stores. If you like small shops, there is an attractive shopping centre in Covent Garden. And London has over 100 street markets.
  4. London is well known for its many theatres: try and get tickets for the National Theatre, a modern building containing three theatres on the south bank of the Thames.
  5. If you like classical music, go to a concert at the Royal Albert Hall or the Royal Festival Hall. You can hear excellent jazz at Ronnie Scott’s club in Soho.
  6. London has many excellent restaurants, serving foods from almost every country in the world. Go to Soho or Charlotte Street, try food at Italian, French, Chinese, Indian, Greek, sometimes it’s hard to find an English restaurant.

-Hey Jane. Have you got a minute? Listen, Simon just told me you`ve got some special free tickets for the Guns N’ Roses concert in December

-Yes, that`s right. Why are you asking? And how do you know? I only told for few girls and asked them to keep quiet about it.

-Yes. Well…you know how people talk. Anyway it`s great news! I want to come too.

-Sorry, Tom. No boys allowed.

-What? Only girls? That`s ridiculous. Why can`t we come with you?

-We? I thought it was just you who wanted to come. Who is «we» then?

-Well…me, Bill, John, Simon, of course, and maybe Jim and Alex.

-No! We, girls, have decided not to have any boys with us. Boys are too noisy and always making trouble. We don`t want any of that, thanks very much.

-I promise we won`t make trouble. We perhaps a little noisy on a trip last year, now we`re older and anyway, that was only a school trip. This is more important. I promise we`ll be good. I`ll even organize transport for us to the concert and back.

-Really? We need a bus to take is all, Tom.

-Exactly! Alex`s dad has many buses. Remember he has a small transport company. I know you would be happy to draw it all.

-You`ve planed everything, haven`t you?

-Well...I don`t want to miss a concert. Say «yes» Jane. You wouldn`t be sorry.

-Well…the girls are going to be furious, but you have been very convincing. Oh, OK, you can come then. But I really have only five extra tickets. So you`ll have to decide which should the boys can come and which can`t.

-Oh, thanks Jane. You`re a friend! I`ll never forget it.

-Yes, yes, all right. But just remember. If there is any trouble I`ll kill you
