Honesty lesson

Josh Ferrin worked as an artist for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, Utah. The newspaper has the longest history in the state and the biggest Sunday circulation. Josh had a lot of work and hoped that in several years he could save up for a house of his own.

Josh adored his wife and two children. They spent holidays together travelling in their old car that broke down regularly. At weekends in winter, they watched their favourite movies in a rented flat that seemed smaller and smaller as the children were growing.

Once Josh and his wife were watching a TV program about children who lived in an orphanage and needed parents. They were so deeply moved by the children’s sad life stories that they decided to adopt a child. The only thing that could stop them was the small flat. That was the moment Josh started looking for a new house. 

Finding a proper house was not an easy thing to do. They wanted it to be not very expensive, big enough and have some history. Finally, Josh brought his wife to look at an outdated two-storey house with a large attic. Though the house needed repair, there was something about it that made Josh and his wife like it. The real estate agent told them the story of the previous owner. He had six children but lived a lonely life in that house and died several years ago. His children decided to sell the old house and share the money.

When they moved in, they went on exploring the house. The massive staircases, cosy bedrooms, a large kitchen and an airy living-room were all they could dream of. The only door that was closed led to the attic below the roof. The next day when his wife and children were away, Josh managed to unlock the door and decided to inspect the attic.

The dark space was empty, with spiders’ webs hanging in the corners. Josh turned on the light and noticed a pile of boxes and tins in one of the corners. A small, broken bike lay nearby. Josh thought the room would be ideal for his art studio and started cleaning it up. He threw away several empty boxes when he suddenly found out that all the rest were stuffed with old books.

Josh drew out several books from one of the boxes and found a thick pile of banknotes at the bottom. When the family returned, Josh called his wife and told her about the treasure he had found. He also showed her a short notice he had found in the same box. The message, ‘to my children’, was written on a piece of yellowish paper.

The sum was enough to buy a new car and repair the house for their own growing family and the child the Ferrins wanted to adopt. The temptation to keep the money was great, but Josh and his wife understood it was not their money.

The next week Josh found the previous owner’s family and handed them the money and the note.

By now, those toddlers have turned into teenagers, who still often come to spend their free time with us, enjoying our creative activities. And we are still growing! Starting from now, we are removing any age restrictions in our club as there’s lots of room and entertainment for people of any age and with any interests. There’s also a Bingo and board games club!

Hi, Dad! I’m so sorry, it looks like I’m going to be late for Granny’s birthday. You know, right after our excursion to the historical museum I was going to Granny’s house. My timing was perfect! But ... A group of Japanese tourists had got lost and asked me how to get to the railway station and while I was explaining the way to them, it started to rain and I got wet to the bone. I had to go home to change my clothes. I’m at home at the moment and heading to Grandma. See you there.

Jill: Hi, Ben! Sorry, I missed your call.

Ben: Hi, Jill! I just wanted to remind you about the book you promised to lend me.

Jill: Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot about it. Yesterday I was at the theatre with my cousin and it was such a rush! She had got last-minute tickets and...

Ben: No need to feel sorry. Did you enjoy the show?

Jill: It was wonderful! Look, I’m going to the fitness centre in an hour or so. I can take the book with me. Let’s meet up on the way there. At the bus stop, is that OK?

Ben: A bus stop? Well… I’ll be at the fitness centre today too. Let’s meet up right there.

Jill: Perfect. You can find me in the aerobics class from 4 to 5 pm.

Ken: Hi, Sue! Are you shopping for sportswear?

Sue: Yes. I’ve bought a tracksuit for myself and a couple of tennis shirts for my

brother. He’s taking part in a tournament soon but his old shirts are too small already. And what have you bought? Is it a glove for boxing?

Ken: No! I did some boxing years ago but that sport is not for me.

Sue: It looks cruel to me though some people find it exciting.

Ken: Right.

Sue: And what’s the glove for then?

Ken: It’s a baseball glove. I’ve joined our school baseball team.

Sue: Congrats!

Ken: Too early. I’m just a beginner in this game. My first training session is tomorrow and I’m feeling nervous.

Task 2.

Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked five people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about their families. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.

Speaker A. Our family is not large, but we spend lots of time together. Unlike most families, we don’t only get together in the evenings and at weekends, but we see each other a lot during the daytime in our family bakery. It’s a family business. It was set up by my grandfather and now my parents run it. My granddad is still in charge of all the accounting matters. I help in the bakery shop and my brother delivers fresh bread and buns to our regular customers.

Speaker B. I have three siblings, which makes four kids in the family all in all. That means plenty of housework, especially for Mum. She usually does most of the shopping, and we try to help her with the cleaning, at least with keeping our rooms clean. As the oldest sister, I also try to look after the younger ones. Dad always washes the dishes and often helps Mum with cooking, which is his hobby, by the way. Doing things together really helps us have more time for each other.

Speaker C. I have ten siblings and dozens of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, you name it. We now all live in different places and even countries. However, we have no problem keeping in touch. We regularly call each other, text, send email and photos. So, we can keep up with life events. I even send cards and letters in the old-fashioned way. We also try to get together as often as possible – usually for big family events where the majority of us will show up.

Speaker D. My sister and I are twins, and people think we should be inseparable because they believe we are very much alike. Well, partially, that’s true. We spend a lot of time together. We do look very much alike, but we are very different in character. She is very calm and relaxed, while I am bubbly and very emotional. She is very ladylike and wears nice dresses. And my all-time favourites are jeans and sneakers. Despite this, we get along really well and never quarrel.

Speaker E. I enjoy it greatly when our family gets together. It doesn’t happen very often, unfortunately, because we live in different cities and everyone is always so busy. But there is a day when we put off all our other plans and come to our grandparents’ house for a special party. We all look forward to this day. We exchange news, discuss our plans, chat and enjoy the most delicious cake our grandmother makes for this day. It’s huge and everyone takes a piece of it.

Task 3

Interviewer: Do you mind answering a few questions? It’s for a survey we are doing.

Respondent: No problem. Ask your questions.

Interviewer: In fact, one of my questions is about pets, but it looks like there’s no need to ask it. The dog is your pet, isn’t it?

Respondent: Yes. I adopted him when he was a small puppy. Now he’s a big dog. He’s friendly, don’t be afraid of him.

Interviewer: I’m not afraid but still… You know, I’ve never had any pets except for goldfish. Anyway, my next question is whether you’ve already chosen your future career or not.

Respondent: Not yet. In fact, I’ve always wanted to be a pilot. It’s been my dream since childhood.

Interviewer: And?

Respondent: It’s very unlikely that it will ever come true. I’ve got a problem with my eyes. I’m short sighted and a pilot should have perfect health. Now, my parents want me to be a lawyer but I’m not sure I want to study law.

Interviewer: Oh, yes. I understand.

Respondent: I’ve probably got a health problem because I usually spend too much time on my computer and other gadgets.

Interviewer: How many hours, on average, do you spend online per week?

Respondent: Fifteen. Yes, I think fifteen on average. The doctor says I shouldn’t make it any more.

Interviewer: I see. And do you speak any foreign languages?

Respondent: I speak Russian but not very fluently yet.

Interviewer: Russian? But why? It’s a difficult language. Most people choose Spanish or Italian.

Respondent: Oh, yes, it’s not easy. I chose it because I’m interested in Russian literature and culture.

Interviewer: And Russian food? People say there are some very unusual dishes in Russian cuisine, like pelmeni or something.

Respondent: I’m not an expert in Russian food, but my favourite food is fish. I

can even cook fish myself.

Interviewer: Oh, I see. And sports? Do you play any?

Respondent: Of course. I go skateboarding with friends. There are skateboarding

facilities in front of our block and we’ve got plenty of opportunity to practise. My

dad promised to teach me windsurfing next summer. But I need to learn to swim

first.

Interviewer: Thank you for your time. But I have a few more questions if you don’t mind…
