So  - No one really knows the origin of it. There are many legends. Here you can see 2 of them

Let’s listen and read.

But first look at these words, do you know them.

There is a beautiful legend behind St. Valentine’s Day.

Saint Valentine lived in Rome in the third century AD. At the time the

Emperor or Rome was Claudius.

He wasn’t very popular because he was trying to get more and more people for his army. The men didn’t want to go to the army and Claudius thought that it was because they didn’t want to leave their wives and children. “If they don’t get married, they will join the army,” he thought and passed a law which banned marriage.

Valentine was a Christian priest who didn’t like the new law. He secretly married people who were in love. One night the Emperor’s soldiers caught him and put him in prison. Valentine was going to die.

Many young people felt sorry for Valentine and visited him in prison. One of them was the daughter of a prison guard. On the day of is execution Valentine wrote a note to her and singed it “Love from your Valentine”. This was on 14 February 269 AD.

There was also other St. Valentine who  was a good friend to children.     Because he would not worship the (не почитают богов указ)gods decreed the Roman emperor, he was put  in prison.     While he was imprisoned, the children missed him and sent him loving notes.

Since then 14 February has been the Day of Love, when people send love letters and presents to each other. They don’t sing the cards with their names, but write “Guess Who” or “Your Valentine”.

I want you to find   some more information about this holiday . Listen and answer.

Now I want you to listen to a text and do a small test. Ready?

Text

BE MY VALENTINE!

February 14th is Valentine’s day. Valentine’s Day is a day for romance and love. It also a day for a fun!

You see a lot of romantic symbols you may see include roses (because roses are thought to be a romantic flower), Cupid (a little boy who can make people fall in love with his special bow and arrow), and hearts.

Hearts are probably the most common Valentine’s Day symbol. People make pictures in the shape of a heart. People buy candles and balloons and many other things in the shape of a heart. You can even find candy in the shape of a heart!

On Valentine’s Day, people give cards and presents to each other. The cards are called valentines. Some people buy the cards. Other people make the cards. The presents might be something small and sweet or something big and dramatic. Some people get engaged (promise to marry each other) on Valentine’s Day.

Some schools have valentine parties. The students give each other valentines. They eat heart-shaped candy.

There are a lot of traditions, customs and  games on St. Valentine’s Day.

The custom of sending valentine cards started  in the middle ages. Written valentines began  about 1400.  The oldest one we know was made in 1415.

There are some  Customs of Sending Valentine Cards

A Frenchman, Charles, of Orleans, was captured by    the English in a battle. He was put in prison in the Tower of London.     There he wrote valentine poems.  Many of them were saved and can be seen today   in the British museum.

At first this was a European tradition, but then it became popular in other countries. It came to Russia too, but a lot of people say, “If you love somebody, you should show it every day, not only one day a year”.

Are you agree?

  • Yes.  If you love somebody, you should show it every day

Do you want to sing a song?

But here you can see some gaps. You task is to listen to and write missed words

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

Don't know much about geography
Don't know much trigonometry
Don't know much about algebra
Don't know what a slide rule is for.

But I do know that one and one is two,
And if this one could be with you,
What a wonderful world this would be.

Now I don't claim to be an "A" student,
But I'm trying to be.
For maybe by being an "A" student baby
I can win your love for me.

What Symbols of  holiday do you know?

Hearts        A long time ago, people believed that all the emotions were found in the heart. In later years, they thought only the emotion of love was connected with the heart. The heart is still a symbol of love, and it is also a symbol of Valentine’s Day.

Cupid             Cupid is a son of Venus, goddess of love. He could cause people to fall in love by piercing them with one of his magic arrows.

Roses                         The rose was the flower of  Venus, the Roman god of love. Red is a colour that stands for strong feelings. That is why the red rose is a flower of love.

Love birds and Doves.    Lovebirds are colorful parrots found in Africa. Most have red bills. They are called love birds because they sit closely together in pairs. Doves were thought to be favorite birds of Venus.

Different Colours  of Roses have Different Meanings

Red Roses -        Love and passion
Yellow Roses -   Friendship
White Roses -    True love and purity of the  mind
Orange Roses -  Enthusiasm and desire

Pink Roses -       Friendship or Sweetheart
Black Roses -     Farewell

What another Symbols of  holiday do you know?

Ribbons.            Ribbons go back to the days when ladies gave ribbons to their favorite knights when they went to war.

Gloves.         Years ago when a man proposed marriage to a woman he asked “for her hand”. The hand became the symbol of marriage and love. Soon gloves also became a symbol of love.

Rings.         In some countries men and women exchange rings when they became engaged or marry. Two or three hundred years ago Valentine’s Day was a popular day for giving an engagement ring. The ring usually had stone or jewel set in it. Diamonds are common in today engagement rings.

Ok, thanks.

Now let’s do a writing test.
