                2. Are people fond of traveling?

                3. How do people travel?

                4. What kind of transport will you use to get to:

  • your granny?
  • your country house?
  • Moscow?
  • America?

5. Is America the largest country in the world?

6. What is the largest country?

II. Повторение.

Teacher:  When we speak about countries we usually speak about their symbols. Try to guess what symbols your classmates will speak about.

Card 1.  Speak about the Russian flag but don’t name it for the others to guess what you are speaking about.

Pupil 1. This flag has three stripes. The upper stripe is white, the middle stripe is red and the stripe at the bottom is blue. These colours have always been symbolic. The white colour means sincere, the blue one – noble and devoted, devoted to the Motherland and family, the red colour means love.

People of this country are proud of their flag. They display it on holidays and great days.

The flag is very old. It has glorious past. In the 19th century it led soldiers in battles and inspired them for great deeds.

( the pupil shows the picture of the flag after the pupils have guessed what it is)

Card 2. Speak about the birch tree, don’t name it for the others to guess what you are speaking about.

Pupil 2. This tree is very popular in the country.  It is associated with the dignity of the nation.

People usually plant the tree near their houses. In old towns people call young beautiful girls this way. The grace of this tree was sung in the poems of a famous poet.

In summer people enjoy the air in such forests. Besides there is a special holiday on which houses are decorated with the branches of the tree.

The young leaves are widely used in medicine. In a word the tree is really worth speaking about.

Teacher: What else would you like to mention about Russia?

Pupil 3. (at the map of Russia) Russia is one of the biggest country in the world. It is washed by the Arctic Ocean in the North, by the Pacific Ocean in east, by the Baltic Sea in the west and by the Black Sea in the south.

There are many rivers in Russia. Many of them are great and mighty. The Volga River is the most famous among them. People call it “Matushka-Volga”. Our city is situated on the Volga too.

Our country is rich in oil, coal, gas. There are big deposits of gold and silver on its territory.

Pupil4. I’d like to speak about Russian  people. They are courageous. They face many difficulties fighting for the independence of their Motherland.

The names of our countrymen are famous the world over. You can hardly find a man who doesn’t know the names of Chaikovsky and Glinka, Repin and Aivasovsky, Korolyov and Gagarin.

Our scientists made plenty of discoveries that glorified Russia.

Pupil 5. Speaking about the glory of Russia we can’t but mention the name of A.V.Suvorov. He was not a kind general but he had a kind heart and that made his soldiers love and respect him. Officers in his army took good care of their soldiers. They knew what they needed that is why Suvorov’s soldiers were never hungry or thirsty.

Suvorov had many great pupils. Kutuzov was among them.

Teacher:  There are many cities in Russia. But what are the most famous among them?

Pupil 6. Moscow, the capital of Russia was founded in 1147 by prince Yury Dolgoruky. It was built on the banks of the Moskwa River. First it was a small city but little by little it grew bigger and bigger. At the end of the 17th century it was much bigger than London as one of the English travelers said.

At the beginning of the 18th century the capital was moved to a newly built St Petersburg by Peter the Great. But in 1918 the capital was returned to Moscow again.

Nowadays Moscow has many places of interest. The best starting point for our tour about Moscow is Red Square. Those who are interested in the cultural life of the city may go to the Bolshoy Theatre or to the Drama theatre. The names of such actors as Bronevoy, Kazakov, Menshov are known the world over.

Pupil 7. I’m sure the story of St Petersburg is not less interesting. It’s a well-known fact that the city was founded in 1703.It was the capital of Russia from 1712 till 1918.

Now St. Petersburg is an industrial, cultural and scientific centre. There are more than 80 museums, over 20 theatres, a lot of exhibitions, clubs in the city.

In St. Petersburg there are  a lot of parks and gardens where citizens spend their free time. The Summer Garden is the oldest and most fascinating  park. Rare trees, bushes and flowers grow there. Beautiful marble statues made by Italian sculptors decorate the Summer Garden.

St. Petersburg is famous for its magnificent architectural ensembles of the 18th and 19th centuries. The most famous square of the city is the Palace Square with the magnificent column in the centre of it.

Teacher. Thank you for your detailed and very interesting answers. Well done it was a real pleasure to listen to you.

Now we’ll pass to another kind of work.

III. Работа над текстом “Great Britain. London”.

1. Read and spell:

[pə`lıtıkl]  |   business

[`biznis]   |   fortress

[bᴂnks]   |   palace

[`fo:tris]   |   prison

[`pᴂlis]     |   banks

[`reivn]     |   political

[`prizn]     |   raven

2. Give sentences with these words.

Pupils.

  • Moscow is a great political centre of Russia.
  • That’s not your business.
  • Where is the nearest bank?
  • Our city started from a small fortress.
  • The Tower of London was a fortress, a palace, now it is a museum.
  • Twelve ravens live in the Tower of London.
  • He was sent to prison.

3. Use these words in your own stories.

Pupil8. London is the capital of Great Britain. It is its political and business centre. This city is famous for its sights. The Tower of London is one of them. It was built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. It was a fortress first, then it was the king’s palace, the prison. Now it is a museum. Twelve black ravens live in it. There is a legend that London will be rich until ravens live in it.

We mustn’t forget that London is a big commercial centre that is why there are so many banks in it.

4. Teacher. I know that many people come to London to see the sights of the city. Mrs. Reed is one of them. She has just come to London and she is having a talk with the information clerk.

Card 3. Imagine you are Mrs. Reed  and an information clerk. Mrs. Reed has just come to London to see the sights of it. Have a talk with the clerk and discuss the places of interest you would like to see. Use:

  • Could you help me, please!
  • What can I do for you?
  • What to begin with?
  • To enjoy the beauty of the place,
  • You’d better use/go…
  • I’m sure/sure thing
  • You are welcome.

Mrs. Reed (R): Hello! Could you help me, please!

Clerk (C): Yes, madam. What can I do for you?

R: It’s my first visit to London. I don’t know what to begin with.

C: You’d better start with the Tower of London. It was there where the city started from. All tourists coming to London go there to learn the history of our capital.

R: Do you mean it is a museum?

C: Right you are. But at first it was a fortress, a King’s palace, a zoo. Now it is the museum telling people the history of London. You will be pleased if you go to see it, I’m sure.

R: Where shall I then?

C: To Trafalgar Square. That is a traffic island  in our big and very busy city.

R: Oh, I read about it in my guide book. It is said here that there are two fountains in it. Thousands of people come to it every day to the square to enjoy the beauty of this famous place.

C: Really so. Lots of people go to the square to feed pigeons there.

R: Wonderful, I’ll go there by all means. By the way, what kind of transport shall I use?

C: Why not to use a bus? Mind they are of different colours in London. If you live downtown you’d better use the red ones. If you want to go to the suburbs use the brown buses.

R: Thank you. You were of great help for me.

C: You are welcome.

5. Teacher: When you are in such a big city you want to see many places of interest. So, you are welcome to have a tour about the city. These are your guides for today.

Card 4. You are guides. Your task is to take a group of tourists about London. Tell them about the City, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square.

Pupils 1,2:

  • We are glad to welcome you here. Make yourselves comfortable.
  • We are your guides for today.
  • London is the capital of Great Britain. It is one of the oldest and most interesting cities in the world. The heart of London is the City, its financial and business centre. Numerous banks, offices and firms are situated there.
  • There are some famous ancient buildings within the City. If you look to the left you’ll see St. Paul’s Cathedral, the greatest of English churches. It is Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece. This cathedral is famous for its Whispering Gallery. There are many memorials in the Cathedral including those to Wellington and Nelson.
  • Now you are to leave the bus as we are going to have an excursion in the Tower of London. I’m sure you remember that this place is closely connected with the history of London. It has served as a fortress, a palace, a prison and now it is a museum. Look at the man over there. He is dressed in a picturesque Tudor uniform. Soldiers wearing such uniform are called Yeoman Warders or Beefeaters.                                                                You are welcome to the bus again.
  • So, we continue our excursion. We are heading to the historic centre of London. On the right you see Westminster Abbey. The Abbey contains Many royal tombs and memorials to eminent men and women. But the most popular ones are those to writers, actors and musicians in Poet’s Corner.
  • Buckingham Palace which is straight ahead is the Queen’s official London residence. Oh, we are lucky to see the changing of the Guard at the Palace. As you see it takes place in the forecourt and lasts about 30 minutes.
  • Now we are in Oxford Street and it leads to Trafalgar Square where the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery are situated. Not far away is the British Gallery – the biggest museum of London. It contains a priceless collection of ancient manuscripts, coins, sculptures etc, and is famous for its library.
  • That is the final sight that we were going to see today. Thank you, it was our pleasure to tell you about London.
  1. Listening: O 15.

Teacher: Open your Workbooks at page 20, exercise 10. You see two columns there. You must match the beginnings of the sentences with their endings. The tape will help you. By the way, what will the text be about? You must not write the sentences, simply join the parts of the sentences.

Pupils  read what they’ve got.

4. Работа над грамматикой.

Teacher: Try to guess what we are going to do now.

Use: Are we going to..?

Pupils: Are we going to read the text?

Are we going to sing a song?

Teacher: Why not? What song will it be?

Pupils: sing the song “One, two, three on the tiptoes” and dance to music.

Teacher: Let’s continue. Is the construction “be going to” the only way to speak about the future in English?

Blackboard: Shall/will +V

Pupils answer the rule.

Teacher: What are going to do after the lessons?

Pupils: We are going to play volleyball.

I’m going to prepare for our tomorrow’s lesson.

I’m going to visit my granny…

Teacher: Some of you have got cards. Are you ready with the task?

Card 5. What are the  members of your family going to do in the evening?

Card 6. Your friend is going to start a pop group. What are the musicians going to do in it?

Pupils give 5-7 sentences to fullfil the  task.

  1. Рефлексия.

Teacher:  In conclusion what can you say about our lesson? Was it productive?

Pupils: *Certainly it was! We did such a great amount of work.

         *All the pupils were active.
