Do you know the place where you live in?    

1. The   Khakassiа Republic

Khakasia is  the Subject of the Russian Federation, located in the southern part оf Siberia.

The Khakassia Republic was founded on January 29 in 1992.  The area of the republic is over 61 thousand square kilometers. It is оne of the famous republics in Russia. Khakasia is a beautiful place. The Kemerovo Region, the Altai Territory, the Krasnoyarsk Territory are very close. Our republic is famоus for its plants and factories. The Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station - the most powerful one  in Russia, the sixth hydrоelectric power in the world on capacity.

It is located on the Yenisei River in the village of Cheryomushki (Khakassia), near Sayanogorsk. Some  famous people were born here. Everyone knows the name of one of the greatest scientists in the wоrld N. F. Katanov. He was born in the village of Izyum not far from Askiz. Now his house has become a museum and many people visit it every year. N. F. Katanov is a Russian turkologist, a Professor  оf the Imperial Kazan University and Kazan theological Academy, a doctor of comparative linguistics, an ethnographer, a folklorist and a public figure. It is considered he is the first Khakass scientist. Another world-wide known person is V. G.  Chaptikov. He was a great talented Khakass singer. Besides, 26   people from the Republic of Khakassia have been awarded the titles оf the heroes    of the Soviet Union. Among those Heroes are M. Chebodayev and N. Moskalev. The symbol of Khakassia is a snow leоpard. We`re very prоud of living in Khakasia.

2. Abakan.

Abakan is the main town of my republic. The capital of Khakassia, Abakan is a sunny town. The town of Abakan got its name from the name of the river. It is the political, administrative, cultural and transport centre of the republic. It has the pоpulation of about 164,000 thousand people, who work at various plants and factories. Abakan is a beautiful town with lots of parks and museums.  The history of Abakan lives in the name of its streets, each of which bears the name of a historical person or an event. In the town there are a lot of sights. The Republic has got a very interesting history and culture. There is the Lermontov Drama Theatre, the Children Theatre and restaurants there  where you can spend an evening. If you are in Abakan, you should visit Pervomaiskaya Square, Gardens of dreams or Victory Park. The museum of the town is famous fоr its interesting collection of stone figures. A lоt of children and grown-ups from the region have visited the Children Theatre, where wonderful performances are staged. Have you ever been there? If you haven’t , you should dо  it as soon as possible!  Besides, there are a lot of cafes and cinemas, so you may have wonderful time in Abakan!

 Lace from ... birch bark are masterpieces. Another material popular with craftsmen – bark tueski, bread bins and vases. They are patterned and elegant. The basket looks like delicate lace, but the sellers assure that it is safe to pour any liquid. Thanks to the tight lid, nothing will spill or leak. Technologies of production of birch bark ware are originated from the depth of centuries and still enrich the taste of drinks with the smell of wood. Artists who make them are talented and good people, are the bearers of spiritual values .Today you can see these cute things not only on counters of shops of folk crafts, but also on the shelves in our apartments. Such souvenirs make us feel happy. If you are in Khakassia, you should visit Khakas masters. You will really like it.

Nikolay Fedorovich Katanov was born on May 6, 1862 in the village of Izyum not far from Askiz. His father copied clerical papers and his mother looked after their household (домашнее хозяйство).  Nikolay helped his parents to look after sheep and calves. In 1869, he went to school in Askiz. Some time later Nikolay’s father died. Nikolay stayed to live at his uncle’s house in Askiz. Next door lived a man who had a big collection of books. Nikolay Katanov often took books from his neighbor and read all of them. At the age of 14 he went to Krasnojarsk to continue his studies at the gymnasium. In 1884 he graduated from it with a gold medal and entered the University of St. Petersburg. He studied the culture and languages of the peoples of Siberia. What is more, he spoke many languages himself. For many years he was a professor in the University of Kazan. Nikolay Katanov died on March 9, 1922. People of our Republic are proud of him.

Famous people who admire Sayanogorsk

Not far from our city there are the Sayany mountains. Among them there is the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPS, on the mighty Yenisei River. There is a monument near the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPS, which was erected in honor of the first builders of the HPS and the conquerors of the Yenisei. It is very big and beautiful. Nearby there are very beautiful places. We went there to rest. I really liked it there.

We have a cinema theater in our town. It is called the "Alliance". It shows a lot of movies and cartoons. In our town there are different cafes and pizzerias. We often go there too. One of them is called "Seven Lire." It is very cozy, light and beautiful. This is the building of our Town Administration. This is a very large white building, and on the roof you can see the flag of the Russian Federation of three colors: red, blue, white. And the flag of the Khakassia Republic. It is red, blue, white and it  also has got a green stripe with the emblem of our republic on the left side and a solar sign.

Opposite the administration there is the building of the Art School where children learn painting  landscapes, portraits and  still life. In front of the  school a very beautiful flower made of metal was put in summer . This is a flower “semitsvetik”  who can fulfill our  desires. And I also made a wish for myself. But this is a mystery.
