Ход урока.

Teacher: Good morning, boys and girls! I hope you are fine today. What date is it today? What day is it today? Who is absent today? I think we are ready to begin our lesson.

Last weekend I had a great opportunity to visit a very interesting place! There are some hints on my table. Look at them and guess where I have been to.

Students: May be you went to a performance?

Teacher: You are right! I enjoyed listening to and watching an opera.

I can say for sure that I adore music and I can’t imagine even a day without it! Do you know what our lesson is about?

Students: Is it about music?

Teacher: You are right. We’ll speak about music, famous composers and musical instruments.

Let’s begin with reading the sayings by famous people. The sentences have been cut. Match the parts and read the statements.  Work in pairs.

           Цитаты:

  1. Music is well said to be the speech of angels. (Thomas Carlyle)
  2. “Music is another Lady that talks charmingly and says nothing”. (Austin O’Malley)
  3. If music be the food of love, play on. (William Shakespeare)
  4. Music is the cup which holds the wine of silence. (Robert Fripp)

Look at the board and read Longfellow’s words:

“Music is the universal language of the world”

Do you agree with the statement? Do you like it? Let it be the motto of our lesson.

I think the words of famous people are wise. Of course, it’s impossible to argue with them. I want you to express your opinion on music. Answer my questions.

  1. How often do you listen to music?
  2. Do you listen to music on TV or radio or your CD player?
  3. What sort of music do you like?
  4. What is your favourite music?
  5. What music are you listening to when you are sad?
  6. What music are you listening to when you are happy?
  7. Do you play a musical instrument?
  8. What composers do you know?

Do you know that music can be of different styles? Listen and repeat after me. Mind the sounds and your pronunciation.

Folk, rock, symphony, rap, jazz, opera, pop.

Listen to the definitions and guess what type of music it is.

 1. Some people say it is difficult to understand this music. But try to listen to it. It is played by big orchestras. If you listen to this music often enough and attentively, you will enjoy Mozart and Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. (symphony)

2. One can hear this music at theatres, on TV and over the radio. This music was composed by such great composers as Mozart, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich. Performers usually sing or dance to this music. (opera)

3. This music is popular mostly with young people. It is performed by modern electronic instruments. There are hard and heavy-metal styles. (rock)

4. This music is traditional and typical.  Every nation has its own national music and dance ensembles. (folk)

5. It is a musical style where the singer speaks or shouts the words. (rap)

6. It is an American style of music. It was created by black Americans. The constant elements are improvisation. (jazz)

7. You can hear this music every day and everywhere. There are a lot of musical groups who perform this kind of music. (pop)

Well done! Say what styles of music you know?

One of the most interesting questions is why people listen to music? Answer the question and complete the spidergramm.

There are a lot of everlasting questions. For instance, what is the power of music? What sort of music do you like? How can music influence people? Our class reporters tried to answer these questions. They collected different information about the influence of music on people and interviewed some people from our school. Let’s look at the results. (презентация анализа анкетирования)

A student: In fact, recent research  has shown that appreciation of music is not a matter of individual taste. Certain types of music will have a particular effect on our mind and bodies, whether we like it or not.

For instance, classical music helps us to feel relaxed and peaceful, other types are stimulating to the brain, encouraging curiosity and alertness. While classical music promotes loving feelings, hard rock music is a good example of music that makes us feel hate, jealousy and violence. But I know music is being used in hospitals and doctors have found that fifteen minutes of soothing music is often far more effective than tranquillizers. I’ve learnt that after an operation, Fiona Richmond was not allowed to listen to her favorite heavy metal group. Instead, she was made to listen to gentle classic music because it was good for her health. I’ve read that many type of classical music speeded plant growth, while heavy metal caused plants to die. – I’ve seen on TV, that taped rock music is used in Sheremetievo to frighten ravens off the fields; obviously, the birds’ nerves cannot endure such noise.

A student: We have interviewed people of different ages. Our questions were:

Do you like music?

What is your favourite sort of music?

- Our results:

People of all ages like music.

The first group of schoolchildren at the age from 7 to 9 likes pop music and classical music.

The second group of pupils at the age from 10 to 13 enjoys rock music, pop music,  metal, classical music.

The third group of young people at the age from 14 to 17 prefers rock music, pop music, rap.

Our parents usually listen to country, pop music, classical music and bard.

Our teachers are keen on pop music, classical music, bard and country.

All things considered the most popular styles of music are pop music, classical music and country.

A student: During the interview we’ve found out that many people make music a part of their lives. Many children go to musical schools, play different musical instruments, and sing songs. Our class is not an exception. And I’d like to sing a song. Help me please.

Teacher: Thank you, girls. All styles of music are composed by talented people. They are composers.  You have prepared tellings about famous musicians. What are your favourite musicians?  What is special about them? What is their contribution to the world of music? Tell us, please.

   (презентации с рассказами о композиторах)

What composers do you know? Have you got a favourite composer?

A student: We have a composer in our class. Karina composes music and she is in a band that performs in St.Petersburg.  Karina, can you play for us?

Teacher: Thank you, Karina! It was exciting! Different musicians compose music for different instruments. Do you know any? Find the names of the instruments in the crossword.

Well, the majority of you prefers to listen to pop music. What are your favourite musicians, singers or composers?

Thank you. You homework is to say a few words about your favourite musician, singer or composer.

Feedback.

I’d like to know if you were comfortable at the lesson, learned a lot and understood everything we were talking about.  Show me:

  •  a golden note, if you liked the lesson and learned a lot;
  • a silver note, if you had some problems;
  • a red note, if you didn’t understand anything and felt uncomfortable

Thank you. All notes are golden. That’s great! It means our work was successful. To sum up, we can say life is short, art is long. To prove it let’s sing a song “Yesterday” by “The Beatles” which is not for an age but for ages.
