Daniel never regained consciousness and had probably suffered brain damage but his family talked to him, held his hand, stroked his hair, and rubbed his shoulders to keep them warm.

She spoke of the moment he died, saying: “We were all with him. I was holding his face, because it was all I could really hold that was still living. After the beeps on the machine got slower, and then did the continual beep, to tell us his heart had stopped, I just couldn’t let go of his face, because I knew when I did it would go cold, and then it wouldn’t be warm again. I held him for what seemed like ages. But then I had to let go. At that point our lives fell apart completely.”

Pitrora, of Croydon, south London, was sentenced to five years’ jail for being concerned with the supply of MDMA, plus two years and four months to be served concurrently for the supply of cannabis.

He said he regretted his crimes and wanted to turn his life around.

After the hearing Mr Tim Spargo-Mabbs said that Daniel, also of Croydon, was a popular pupil who was voted prom king at school, was a member of Amnesty International and an organ donor.

He said: “He was a real citizen of the 21st century. He would have contributed an awesome amount of good.”

Outside the court Supt Des Rock said: “Pitrora has only shown remorse at the last moment for his actions. He will now spend time in prison where I hope that he will reflect on the devastation that he has caused.
