Lesson “Friendship”

  1. Engagement

T: Good morning dear students. Let’s start our lesson. But first I’d like to show you a video and ask to guess the topic of our lesson. (video 1)

T: So what’s the topic?

You are right – Friendship.

Now let’s remember some expressions on the topic. You will work in pairs and complete the table about friends. You see there are three columns: nouns, adjectives, verbs. You should complete the column with bold words. (handout 1)

Thanks. Now let’s have 2 groups (you, you, you – one group, you, you, you – the other group). And in your new groups exchange the information.

Good. Now please in groups speak about your best friend and why you think he/she is the best of all.

(ask one person from each group to tell about her friend)

  1. Study
  • There are many definitions of friendship and we are going to read about them. Divide in two groups, please. I will give you the text. But there are some gaps in it. To fill in the gaps you should choose a runner who will bring you the cards with missed words. The words are:

Affection, attachment, companionship, compatible, loyalty, maladjustment, mutual, nurture, peer, recognition. (reads from the board)

You have 4 minutes. Your time starts. (handout 2)

Time is over. Let’s check your answers in pairs – (one person from one team – one from the other)

You may take your seats.

  • Now your texts are complete and I want you to read it for the second time to get a deeper inside into it and be ready to answer True-False Questions. Look at the statements first and then read the text. You have 5 minutes. (handout 3)

Thanks. We are going to check. Stand up, please. I will read the sentence and if you agree you are to stand on my right, if you disagree – stand on my left.

Thanks. Take your seats. Group one. Group two.

  • I will give you the list of words to each group and your task is in groups discuss them and think of your definitions of these words. I give you 4 minutes. (handout 4a)

Let’s check if your definitions are right. One person from the opposite team will read the definition and you are to guess what word from your list it is. (handout4b)

  • Ok. Good. Now you know new words, you know what they mean but now let’s see if you can use them. You will play click-click. We need three pairs. I will give each pair a set of cards with sentences. One person takes a card, reads a sentence aloud and her partner should guess what word is clicked. (handout 5)

  1. Activation
  • Thank you. You’ve read several definitions of friendship. Now in pairs discuss and think of your own definitions of what friendship is – using target vocabulary and providing examples from your life. At least 6 sentences. You have 4 minutes.

Ask one person from each pair to tell their definition.

  • Thanks for your definitions. I want to show you one video.

Do you like it? Please describe what’s happening in the video using the target vocabulary. I will give you the beginning. (video2)

Thanks for your work.

Good bye.

"What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies". - Aristotle

Perhaps the one relation that has survived the trials and has still remained unconditional is friendship. A unique blend of (1)_________, loyalty, love, respect, trust and loads of fun is perhaps what describes the true meaning of friendship between two individuals. Similar interests, (2)________ respect and strong attachment with each other are what friends share between each other. These are just the general traits of a friendship. To experience what is friendship, one must have true friends, who are indeed rare treasure.

Different people have different definitions of friendship. For some, it is the trust in an individual that he / she won't hurt you. For others, it is unconditional love. There are some who feel that friendship is (3)________________. People form definitions based on the kind of experiences they have had. This is one relation that has been nurtured since times immemorial. There are famous stories about friends in mythologies of different religions all over the world. They say a person who has found a faithful friend has found a priceless treasure.

Psychologically speaking, friendship may be defined as "a dynamic, mutual relationship between two individuals. As children become friends, they negotiate boundaries within which both partners function". This helps them to function like healthy individuals in life as they learn to draw a line as and when needed in a relation. This greatly helps in the emotional development of an individual. However, any relation needs constant nurturing and development from all the people that are involved in one. Friendship cannot survive if one person makes all the effort to sustain it without any mutual (4)____________ from others.

Since friendship starts the moment a child starts socializing, the kind of friends that the child chooses should be taken care of till the time he / she learns to differentiate between right and wrong. Wrong peers or lack of socializing can lead to severe psychological traumas and disorders, finally leading to social (5)_______________. The correct peer group is essential for the development of the personality of a child. Both positive and negative experiences refine the personality of the individual.
