Ход урока:

I. Warm up.

  1. Which global issues are the most important nowadays?
  2. Which of them are the most serious in Russia?

- deforestation

- the destruction of habitat

- endangered species

- pollution

- forest fires

- floods and droughts

- waste disposal

Aim of the lesson: Today we are going to talk about environmental issues in Russia. The aim is to discuss some of these problems and practise exams tasks in listening and reading. the home task will be to make a project about one of the problems in our city or area.

II. Listening.

  1. Pair work.

Look at the questions. Discuss them in pairs and share your ideas with the class.

  1. Can major environmental problems be solved in one country alone?
  2. Do you think Russia plays a negative or positive role in global economy?

  1. Now we are going to listen to the part of the radio programme. There are some useful words and expressions that will help you to understand it.

to achieve ecological problems                    common land

to combine one’s efforts                               biodiversity

to compensate for                                         waste disposal

to purify                                                        wetland

to regenerate

  1. Listen and check your answers.
  2. Now we are going to practise a typical exam test. You have to listen to the recording one more time and decide if the statements are true (T), false (F) or there is no information (NI).
  3. Read the statements and prove your decision.

III. Reading.

As you see, in the programme there is no information species that are under threat of extinction in Russia. So now we are going to read some newspaper extracts about the problem. Match the extracts (1-4) with the titles (A-E). There is one extra title. Remember it is also a typical exam task.

  1. Check the answers. Read out the words and expressions that have helped you to identify the correct answer.

  1. Group work. Now let’s work in groups of four. Which of these issues do you consider the most important? Discuss them in groups and prepare a short answer for 1-2 minutes why you think this issue is of particular importance. Give your reasons.

  1. Each group gives a presentation to the class.

  1. Do you think anything can be done to improve the situation?

IV. Speaking

Group work. Look at the questions. Make up a list of problems and find out the possible ways of solving them.

- What problems of the local environment do we have?

- What could you personally do to protect the local environment?

water  conservation, recycling facilities, reduce traffic congestion around school, reduce air pollution, organically grown vegetables

V. Do you think the exercises we’ve done today are useful? Why?

VI.  H/A

1. Choose an environmental issue in our city or area and think of the things we can make to improve the situation.

2. Make up a short presentation to the whole class.

Handouts

I. Say whether these statements are true (T), false (F) or there is no information (NI).

  1. Ecological disasters should be prevented by local governments.
  2. Russia is a “donor” for many ecosystems.
  3. Russian forests occupy nearly half of its territory.
  4. Russian wetlands pollute the environment.
  5. A great number of plant species are under the threat of extinction in Russia.

II. Read the newspaper extracts (1-4) with the titles (A-E). There is one extra title.

  1. The brown bear has always represented Russian nature, but this Russian mascot needs nature reserves for its continued survival. In just 10 years, Russia’s Green movement has helped to increase the total area of Russia’s protected lands by 20%. But many problems still remain unresolved. Among them are the particularly vulnerable reserves in Central Russia and the Caucasus, where many of the bears live today….

  1.    Today, only about 450 Amur tigers live in the Far Eastern taiga. How do they manage to survive, threatened by poaching, illegal logging, and lack of food? To save this magnificent predator from possible extinction, a special campaign to deal with these threats was launched by WWF-Russia eight years ago. But we need to keep up the pressure. So don’t delay – visit this website and find out how you can support this campaign

  1.   The population of the sturgeon, the pride of Russian cuisine, is declining dramatically. The reason is obvious – it is overfishing. Despite the Federal Law on Banning Fishing in Spawning Grounds, poachers are still ruthlessly exterminating the fish. What is totally disastrous: after taking out the caviar they leave the dead fish on the coast.

  1.   I believe that educating the public about the benefits of recycling will get more people involved in recycling and make them environmentally aware. But it’s the local government’s responsibility, too. If the binmen took away sorted rubbish, that would be fine, but they don’t, and we just don’t have the time and the energy to dispose of all this litter ourselves.
