Good morning, сhildren! I’m glad to see you! I hope everybody is ready to work.

We have already learnt a lot of information about famous people. Watch a video and try to guess the theme of our lesson.

You are right. Our main topic for discussion will be the famous people depicted on the English banknotes. Do you want to know what these people are famous for? Would you like to know it?

I want to give some individual tasks to you.

Who is interested in Biology?

Who is interested in Economics? Who is interested in History?

Look! We can see Queen Elizabeth 2, Charles Darwin, Elizabeth Fry, Adam Smith on the screen. El. Fry is depicted on a five-pound note, Ch. Darwin is depicted on a ten-pound note, and we can see portraits of Sir Edward Elgar and Adam Smith on a twenty –pound note. Each of you has to make some search to find out some facts about one of these people. And then you must complete a table about a person and inform the whole class how these men became famous. You have only 15 minutes. Good luck!

Учащиеся получают тексты об известных людях, изображенных на купюрах, таблицы, которые они должны заполнить

The next task for you is to read a text about Queen Elizabeth II. You are to read the sentences, translate them and use the verbs in brackets in their correct form.

One of the famous men depicted on the banknotes is a famous English composer Sir Edward Elgar. Let’s have a rest and listen to his beautiful music.

As I can see our speakers are ready to present the results of their work. But at first let’s watch a short video about Queen Elizabeth II. What do you feel having watched the video?

Let’s start. Who would like to be the first?

As a kind of relaxation let’s get acquainted with some English proverbs about money and guess their Russian equivalents.

Do you remember the chant about John, who worked at the bank. Let’s recall the words.

Was it interesting to know more about the outstanding people from the British banknotes? But who is Elizabeth Fry? Do you know this name? What is she famous for? Can you predict? Open your books on page 53, ex. 1. Read the first paragraph to find out.

Look at the slide and say if the statements are true or false.

Choose the correct answer.

Elizabeth II

Elizabeth II is the Queen of the United Kingdom. She was born on April 21st, 1926. Her full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary and she is the monarch of sixteen sovereign states.

Elizabeth was born in London and educated privately at home by private tutors. She was the oldest daughter of Elizabeth I and Prince Albert, who later obtained the title King George VI. From the very childhood she was very keen on studying. Her most favourite subjects included arts and sport. Her youth was troubled by the Second World War.

Elizabeth became the monarch of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon upon the death of her father – George VI, on February the 6th, 1952. She is the Queen of 25 Commonwealth countries.

At the moment she is one of the longest reigning British monarchs. Elizabeth’s husband is Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. They married on November 20th, 1947. One year later Elizabeth gave birth to their first child, Prince Charles. Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s other children are Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

The Queen has five official residences in Great Britain, including Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Her hobbies are horse-breeding and horse-racing.

She is famous for Diamond Jubilee, which we celebrated in 2013, marking 60 years on the throne. Her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, reigned for 63 years, so we need only another 3 years for the record to be broken!

Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, on 12 February 1809 at his family home, The Mount. He was the fifth of six children of wealthy society doctor and financier Robert Darwin, and Susannah Darwin.

Darwin was the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection. Like several scientists before him, Darwin believed that all the life on Earth developed gradually over millions of years from a few common ancestors.

The eight-year-old Charles already had a taste for natural history and collecting when he joined the day school run by its preacher in 1817. That July, his mother died. From September 1818 he joined his older brother Erasmus attending the nearby Anglican Shrewsbury School.

In October 1825 he entered the University of Edinburgh Medical School, at the time the best medical school in the UK.

On 27 December 1831; his voyage of Beagle began, it lasted almost five years. As captain had intended, Darwin spent most of that time on land investigating geology and making natural history collections, while the Beagle surveyed and charted coasts. In South America Darwin found fossils of extinct animals that were similar to modern species. On Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean he noticed many variations among plants and animals of the same general type as those in South America. The expedition visited places around the world, Darwin studied plants and animals everywhere he went.

Darwin chose to marry his cousin, Emma Wedgwood.

The Darwins had ten children. Charles was a devoted father and uncommonly attentive to his children. Whenever they fell ill, he feared that they might have inherited weaknesses from inbreeding due to the close family ties he shared with his wife and cousin, Emma Wedgwood. He examined this topic in his writings, contrasting it with the advantages of crossing amongst many organisms. Despite his fears, most of the children went on to have distinguished careers.

Adam Smith

Adam Smith was a great scientist who made extraordinary contributions in economics. Economist and key figure of the Scottish Enlightenment who was credited as the father of capitalism. His 1776 work, The Wealth of Nations, helped influence modern economics and offered one of the world's first collected descriptions of what builds a nations' wealth.

He was born in 1723 in Kirkcaldy, a small fishing town near Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was a customs officer. Shortly before Adam Smith was born, his father died, leaving just the mother raise him, but throughout Smith's life, he remained committed to his widowed mother, and never married.

Smith studied social philosophy at the University of Glasgow and at Balliol College in the University of Oxford, where he was one of the first students to benefit from scholarships.

At the age of 28 Adam Smith became a Professor of Logics at the University of Glasgow. It was his first academic appointment. Some time later he became a tutor to a wealthy Scottish duke. Then he received a grant of £300 a year. It was a very big sum, 10 times the average income at the time.

With the financial security of his grant, Smith devoted 10 years to writing his work which founded economic science. Its full title was «An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations». It was published with great success in 1776.

Adam Smith is famous for the fact that he made economics a science. This Scottish economist is often regarded as the founder of political economy, too.
