Dear friends!

I am very pleased to welcome you to our school party. It’s dedicated to literature, poetry in particular. We spoke much about the influence of English language all over the world.  First English spread over the globe with the development of British Empire.  Then success of American industry and the growth of exports in technologies made the similar impact on the circulation of the language. And the third factor of the last decades is remarkable increase in computer-related equipment and technologies as well as the influence of British and American pop culture and video entertainment. And today our pupils of senior classes will introduce you to the works of great English and American poets and you’ll watch some musical performances.

-2-

1st Pupil:  I learn English  because I want to read and recite the great Shakespear in original:

Sonnet CXXXVIII

When my love swears that she is made of truth

I do believe her though I know she lies,

That she might think me some untutor’d youth,

Unlearned in the world’s false subtleties.

Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,

Although she knows my days are past the best,

Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue:

On both sides thus is simple truth supress’d

But wherefore says she not she is unjust?

And wherefore say not I that I am old?

O, love’s best habit is in seeming trust,

And age in love loves not to have years told:

Therefore I lie with her and she with me,

And in our faults by lies we flatter’d be.

2nd Pupil: I learn English because of the sweetest language of R.Burns

***

O my love’s like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in June

O my love’s like the melodie

That’s sweetly play’d in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,

So deep in love am I;

And I will love you still, my dear,

Till a’the seas gang dry:

Till a’the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt with the sun;

And I will love you still, my dear,

While the sands o’life shall run.

And fare you weel, my only love,

And fare you weel a while!

And I will come again, my love,

Tho’ it were ten thousand mile!

And the tender words of Robert Burns are tightly connected with tuneful modern music.

3d Pupil: Listen to a poem of a great English poet G. Biron

“The Age of Bronze”

Moscow! Thou limit of his long career,

For which rude Charles had wept his frozen tear

To see in vain –he saw thee-how? with spire

And palace fuel to one common fire.

To this the soldier lent his kindling match,

To this the peasant gave his cottage thatch,

To this the merchant flung his boarded store,

The prince his hall-and Moscow was no more!

Sublimest of volcanoes! Etna’s flame

Pales before thine, and quenchless Hecla’s tame;

Vesuvius shows his blaze, an usual sight

For gaping tourists, from his hackney’d height:

You stand’st alone unrivall’d, till the fire

To come, in which all empires shall expire!

4th Pupil:                                          Leisure

by W. H. Davies

What is this life if, full of care

We have no time to stand and stare!

No time to stand beneath the boughs

And stare as long as sheep and cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,

And watch her feet how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can

Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this is if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

5th Pupil:                Our grandparents learnt English to listen to “The Beatles”. Some say they are 4 young longhaired hooligans singing primitive rock’n’roll tunes like “Can’t Buy Me Love “. The other put them in the same rank with the greatest European composers, taking into account their albom“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” Still the others may call them outstanding pacifists, philosophers and optimists remembering the texts of their compositions, their mode of life and their obvious influence on the young generations back in the sixties.

But our generation listens to their songs too and we like you to enjoy their song “Let it Be.”

Let it be.

When I find myself in times of trouble

Mother Mary comes to me

Speaking words of wisdom :”Let it be”

And in my our of darkness

She is standing right in front of me

Speaking words of wisdom: ”Let it be”

Let it be!

Wisper words of wisdom : ”Let it be”

And when the broken-hearted people

Living in the world agree-

There will be an answer: ”Let it be.”

Let it be!

And when the night is cloudy

There is still a light that shines on me.

Shine until tomorrow, let it be.

I wake up to the sound of music,

Mother Mary comes to me

Speaking words of wisdom: ”Let it be!”

Let it be!

There will be an answer: Let it be!

6th Pupil:        We’d like you to listen to the poems of great American poets. They are quite different when translated or abridged.

The Rainy Day.

by  Henry  Longfellow.

The day is cold , and dark , and dreary;

It rains , and the wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,

But every gust the dead leaves fall,

And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold , and dark, and dreary;

It rains , and the wind is never weary;

My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,

But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still , sad heart ! and cease repining;

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

Thy fate is the common fate of all,

Into each life some rain must fall,

Some days must be dark and dreary.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.

By  Robert Frost.

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year/

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely , dark and deep.

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

7th Pupil:        The younger generation prefers to listen and sing modern English and American groups. No doubt, that some of them have much to be desired. But side by side with them there are groups which are of great success in show business and they are undeniable leaders. “Linkin Park” is the group of that kind. Listen to their popular song

”Faint”

Faint

I am
A little bit of loneliness
A little bit of disregard
A handful of complaints
But I can't help the fact
That everyone can see these scars
I am
What I want you to want
What I want you to feel
But it's like
No matter what I do
I can't convince you
To just believe this is real
So I let go watching you
Turn your back like you always do
Face away and pretend that I'm not
But I'll be here
'Cause you're all that I got

I can't feel
The way I did before
Don't turn your back on me
I won't be ignored
Time won't heal
This damage anymore
Don't turn your back on me
I won't be ignored

I am
A little bit insecure
A little unconfident
'Cause you don't understand
I do what I can
But sometimes I don't make sense
I am
What you never want to say
But I've never had a doubt
It's like no matter what I do
I can't convince you
For once just to hear me out

-7-

So I let go watching you
Turn your back like you always do
Face away and pretend that I'm not
But I'll be here
'Cause you're all that I got

I can't feel
The way I did before
Don't turn your back on me
I won't be ignored
Time won't heal
This damage anymore
Don't turn your back on me
I won't be ignored

No
Hear me out now
You're gonna listen to me
Like it or not
Right now

Hear me out now
You're going to listen to me
Like it or not
Right now

I can't feel
The way I did before
Don't turn your back on me
I won't be ignored

I can't feel
The way I did before
Don't turn your back on me
I won't be ignored
Time won't heal
This damage anymore
Don't turn your back on me

8th Pupil:

Christina Aguilera - Hurt

Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face
You told me how proud you were, but I walked away
If only I knew what I know today
Ooh, ooh

I would hold you in my arms
I would take the pain away
Thank you for all you've done
Forgive all your mistakes
There's nothing I wouldn't do
To hear your voice again
Sometimes I wanna call you
But I know you won't be there

Ohh I'm sorry for blaming you
For everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself by hurting you

Some days I feel broke inside but I won't admit
Sometimes I just wanna hide 'cause it's you I miss
And it's so hard to say goodbye
When it comes to these rules

Would you tell me I was wrong?
Would you help understand?
Are you looking down upon me?
Are you proud of who I am?

There's nothing I wouldn't do
To have just one more chance
To look into your eyes
And see you looking back

Ohh I'm sorry for blaming you
For everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself, ohh

If I had just one more day
I would tell you how much that I've missed you
Since you've been away
Ooh, it's dangerous
It's so out of line
To try and turn back time

I'm sorry for blaming you
For everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself by hurting you

Dear guests! Our party is over. You 've got acquainted with the works of the most famous British and American poets. I am sure the poetry enriched your souls and improved your tastes. I hope you have enjoyed the nice music you've listened to.
