Круглый стол "Why learn English?"

Тема: “Why Learn English”

Цель: актуализация знаний, умений и навыков по теме, формирование у учащихся умения высказывать точку зрения о роли английского языка в мире, сферах его употребления.

Задачи урока:

Развивающая: развивать способности к формулированию выводов из полученной информации, мышление, инициативность речи учащихся.

Образовательная: совершенствовать лексические навыки по теме, навыки аудирования, письма, развивать монологическую и диалогическую речь.

Воспитательная: воспитывать в детях вежливость в общении, толерантность к мнениям других людей, развивать умения слушать и слышать другого, воспитывать цивилизованную личность.

  2. Оргмомент: дата, отсутствующие, сообщение темы урока.

We’re coming up to the end of the big module called “English – a global language”.

We’ve already learnt a lot about English spelling and pronunciation, grammar and different kinds of English.

So to sum up I want you to explain why we study the English language and how important language learning is. (Slide 1)

  1. Фонетическая зарядка

Before we start repeat after me:    Language,   foreign language,   language families,   vocabulary,   rich vocabulary,  dictionary,   probable,  Slavonic,   Australia,   Scandinavian,  Chinese,  Germany,  Portuguese,  Irish,  Norwegian, Bulgaria,  Scottish,   France – French.

  1. Речевая зарядка

You recently learnt new words. Name three things that can be:

1) popular (music, group, shopping centre),

2) regular (exercises, meetings,  trips),

3) perfect (day, pronunciation, idea),

4) rich (people, vocabulary, country),

5) probable (question, answer, trip),

6) fresh (air, flowers, newspapers).

Well done! Now paraphrase the following using the new words:

1) to like tea more than coffee,

2) to walk behind someone,

3) to train sounds,

4) probably,

5) a car that is not slow,

6) a man who is not poor,

7) to come every day,

8) to want a necessary thing,

9) to stay in one place and want someone or something to come.

  1. (Активизация речевой деятельности)  Well done. Now I want you to remember the words connected with countries, people’s nationalities and the languages they speak.

I want you to complete the sentence. For example: If people live in Russia they speak… “Russian”, you say. Is it clear?

If people live in China they speak…      

If you are going to Germany it is a good thing to know…

Norwegian is spoken in…                        People living in Canada speak…   and … .

In France they speak…                             Bulgarian is spoken in…

Dutchmen and Dutchwomen speak… and they live in …

If you come from Vietnam you speak…

Now I want you to work in pairs. One of you tells your partner: I live in (and name the country). Your partner should complete: So you speak … (name the language). Do it quickly.

VI.  (Аудирование) Now that we remember names of countries and nationalities  complete the sentences you will hear on the tape. Take the pieces of paper with a red letter A, write down your name and be ready to fill in the gaps. You‘ll hear the recording twice.

1).There are .  .  .  .  .  .  . main language families in the world.   2) Nearly all the languages of modern  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  . are relatives.   3) .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  . ,  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  and Ukrainian belong to Slavonic languages.   4)  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  . and  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  are Scandinavian languages.  5) Italian  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  . ,  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  and  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  . came from Latin.

Now give me your papers. I’ll check them later.

Good pupils. You’ve got good memory. Now I’d like you to speak about English. So answer my questions:

  1. In what countries do people speak English as their everyday language?
  2. What do we call these countries?
  3. Where else do people speak English?
  4. How many words are there in English?
  5. Where did most English words come from?
  6. If we don’t know the word what do we do?
  7. Have you ever spoken English to a foreigner?
  8. What is the national language of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland?
  9. What kinds of English do you know?
  10. What are the most popular kinds of English? Why?

Let’s speak about them (British English and American English).

They are not really that much different. If you meet people who come from the USA you won’t probably have much difficulty in understanding what they say. It is so because the vocabulary and grammar of the language is very much the same (isn’t it). But some things have different names in Britain and America.

Look at the screen. We can see that people in Great Britain and in the USA name the same things differently. For example, …(Slide 2)

  1. Each of you now has a card with a British word on the left side. (It is a piece of paper with a blue letter W). Your task is to write its American equivalent. Your cards are different, you can’t copy from your partner (дифференцированный подход). Put down your name. (Slide 1)

As soon as you’ve done the task swap the papers and check them yourselves. (Check the papers with the help of the table on the screen (Slide 2)

       VII.  Now we’ve come up to the most difficult part of the lesson. We’re talking about  a serious thing – why did you decide to begin learning English one day?

I want you to give me some reasons. To do this task use the constructions which are on the screen. For example, “Some people learn English because they like English pronunciation.” Or “I study the language to ask the way in a foreign country.”

  • to get any information we need (80% of all information in the world’s computers is in English, nearly 50% of all the companies in Europe communicate with one another in English, 75% of all international letters and telexes are in English)
  • to get a better job, to use English in our future career
  • for pleasure
  • to listen to a tour guide
  • to ask the way in a foreign country and to tell  a foreigner the way in our country
  • to enjoy songs and films in English
  • because it is easy to learn
  • because it is the international language of businesspeople, pilots, diplomats, politicians, sportsmen, scientists, doctors, musicians, singers, actors, students.
  • because my Mum wants me to know it

Well, one of the reasons to study English is to travel all over the world and have no difficulties in communication. Let’s support this idea.

So people speak English where? In cafes and restaurants, at the airports and at the stations, in the shops, if they want to go to the theatre or cinema, so to buy tickets.

VII. I want you to do another task and we’ll have a rest.

I’ll give you some pieces of paper. They are dialogues at the café, at the railway station, in the street, in the shop, with a receptionist at the hotel. Work in pairs. Make up dialogues and then act out some of them.

  • - Good morning. Can I help you?                                                                                            
  • I’d like a sweater, please.                                                                                                                                        
  • What colour?                                                                                                                                                                            
  • White or light blue.                                                                                                                                        
  • What size are you? / What size do you wear?                          
  • Forty four… Can I try it on?                                                                    
  • Sure. The fitting room is over there… Oh, it’s too big for you.        
  • Yes. Do you have a smaller one?                                                              
  • Try this one. Oh, it suits you perfect.

  • OK, I’ll take it.

  • -     Good morning. Can I help you?                                              

            -       Yes, please. Can I have a room in your hotel?                                    

  • Certainly, madam/sir. How long are you going to stay?            
  • From Friday to Monday.                                                                    
  • Would you like a single room or a double?                            
  • A double, please, with a bathroom.                                            
  • One moment, please… Yes, we have a room available.            
  • How much is it per night?                                            
  • $70, with breakfast.                                                                                                  
  • That’s fine.                                                                                                                  
  • Could I have your name, please?                                                                              
  • It’s Scott.                                                                                                                      
  • Thank you,  Mr(s) Scott. You can check in   any time after 12.                              

  • -     Excuse me?                                                                                                                  

           -     Yes?                                                                                                                                          

           -     What’s the best way to get to this address?                                                                        

           -      I think by bus but you can go on foot.                                                                                -     Which bus do I take?

           -      Bus 17. It drives past the cinema. Your house is next to it.                                            

           -     And if I walk, is it far from here?                                                                                            

                           -     No, it isn’t. Walk straight on as far as the church, turn right into Queen St.    You can’t miss it.        

  • -     Can you show me the menu, please?                                                                                                                                                    

      -     Certainly.  Here it is.

      -     I’d like pizza.                                                                                                                  

  • What pizza would you like?                                                                                        
  • Cheese, Tomato and Chicken pizza.
  • What size?                                                                                                                      
  • Small, please.                                                                                                                  
  • What would you like to drink?                                                                                    
  • Coca-cola and then a cup of coffee.                                                                      
  • Anything else?                                                                                                          
  • Yes, please. Vanilla ice-cream.                                                                                
  • Would you like a chocolate cake?                                                                    

  • -     Next, please.                                                                                                          
  • I’d like two adult and two child tickets.

(Учещиеся разыгрывают диалоги, ученики послабее читают их).

  1. I promised you to have a rest. Read and translate these jokes:

Teacher (paying a visit): “Are your father and mother in, Morton?”

Morton:  “They was in, but they is out.”

Teacher:  “Why, Morton! They was in! They was out! Where is your grammar?”

Morton:  “She’s sleeping upstairs.”

A little boy asks a driver: - Could you give me a ride, please? I’m late for school.”

  • But I’m heading in the opposite direction, son.
  • Even better!

A police officer sees a man driving around with a truck full of penguins. “You can’t drive around with penguins in this town,” he says. “Take them to the zoo.”

The driver says OK and drives away.

The next day the officer sees the same truck full of penguins. “I told you to take these penguins to the zoo yesterday,” he says.

The man answers, “I did. Now I’m taking them to the cinema.”

  1. I hope you had fun. Go back to English. You understand that English is an important language to study. Now I’d like to know what you think about learning foreign languages.

What do you do to learn English successfully?

To have some ideas read the text “Nastya Likes Learning English”.

        Nowadays a lot of people want to know foreign languages. Some of them have become global languages, i. g. (that is) languages of the planet. They help people all over the world to exchange (обмениваться) information and to develop understanding. English is one of such languages. Sometimes people call English the global language, because nearly in all countries of the world people speak it. Nastya, a thirteen-year-old Russian pupil, explains why she wants to learn English.

        “It’s fun to communicate with people from different countries. When you travel abroad, you have to speak a foreign language because not many people there know Russian. If you speak English, you’ll have no problems – they understand it almost everywhere. When I went to Turkey last summer, I made friends with two girls from England and now I practise my English sending them e-mails twice a week.”

        To learn English better Nastya reads a lot, listens to songs in English and watches different video-films and satellite /’sxtqlait/ TV programmes in English. She also keeps personal vocabulary and often looks words up in the dictionary.
